Powersets that you won't play?
I have not played Empathy and do not expect to. To many bad Empathy have tainted it for me.
I have tried several times before the nerf to Energy melee to like it but I just do not like the jump in the air animations or the wait. Post nerf I do not think I will give it a try again outside of the Mind/Energy Dom I already have.
Ice Blast I liked it right up to the Ball lighting throw animation. For some reason I cannot get past how that looks.
I also do not like Ice armor or Stone due to the fact they cover the costume.
Sets I have tried and might try again for theme reasons despite their issues.
Dark Blast. RAD Blast.
The other side of the coin are sets I really like.
Fire Blast, Psi Blast, Sonic Blast, Fire Melee.
Super Str, Stone Melee, Dark Melee,
Electric Armor, Fire Armor and Will power.
Kinetic's over and above any other support set, RAD, Sonic and FF.
Pinnacle
Arch light L50 INV/SS
Psiberia L50 Kin/Psi
Screaming Mentallica L50 Sonic/MM
Infinity
Arc Voltinator L50 SS/Elec
Mind Fire Kinesis L50 Fire/Kin
Flaming Screamer L50 Fire/Sonic
Dual pistols. The current animations (which were really well done) just don't suit me, I find them too flashy and annoying after a while. I'm hoping they eventually add an alternative animation like the malta gunslingers have. Also the lack of aim in the set, low damage, redraw, and recharge; isn't compelling me to want to play it just yet.
Fiery Aura set. In my opinion, its just a lot weaker compared to other sets available, and I hate that it is also lacking KB protection.
Stone armor set. Firstly because of preconceptions that "you must have a stone tank/brute for x-y-z TF's" and I absolutely hate cookie cutter builds for teams. Secondly because I like to be try things differently to the norm. And lastly because I absolutely hate the way granite armor looks -- I wish it could be customised not only in texture but in SIZE.
Oh one more -- I also hate the appearance of rooted. It's like a giant cow crapped all over your feet and its stuck there permanently.
Necromancy. The sound and visuals of projectile vomit going off constantly is... off-putting after a while. Plus the minions seem to be easier to shred than paper (in my opinion).

Sets I wont play...hmm...thats a good question. Alot of sets I dont play is for looks of the powerset. I refuse to play them till the look gets updated to something that looks better. There are some sets I dont play because they are too squishie. There are some sets I dont play due to retarded dev design decisions.
Stuff thats just too fugly to play
Spines
Ice Armor
Thorns
Stone Armor
Crab Spider
Necro Masterminds
Stuff thats too squishie
Fire Armor
Dark Armor
Invulnerability (set is no where near as good as it was back in issue 3)
Stuff I wont play due to design decisions
Dark Armor-I gave this set my all but I can no longer play it, its just not fun having to worry about endurance even when you got +recovery IOs and bonuses slotted out to the gills
Claws on a stalker, no real aoe in the set. The single target damage it has doesnt justify the lack of aoe where as stuff like energy melee it does.
Sonic powersets- I hate the sound they make and the defensive set is pretty lacking in powers that benefit the caster, the tier 9 is awful for the defensive set.
Gravity Control-the set has awsome end game potential but I cant justify being dead weight on a team for 26 levels. Its just not fair to a team to do this whether its a dom or troller. This is the one set that needs to break the cottage rule if nothing else does by making wormhole come at lvl 12.
I could go on forever with this but I am not.
Bump and Grind Bane/SoA
Kenja No Ishi Earth/Empathy Controller
Legendary Sannin Ninja/Pain Mastermind
Entoxicated Ninja/PSN Mastermind
Ninja Ryukenden Kat/WP Scrapper
Hellish Thoughts Fire/PSI Dominator
Thank You Devs for Merits!!!!
Willpower - too much is wrong with the set
Fire control - imps piss me the hell off. They do great damage but often get in the way of melee players. I can think of all the times I wanted to launch my keyboard across the room because of imps lagging me away from a target. (Devs please make pets non solid objects) Dominators - I can never level one very far without wanting to scream at seeing the words "Too tired" on my screen all the time. Villains suffer without any form of recovery buff before level 20 and dominators seem to use more endurance than anything on the planet. Warshades - damage is too low to justify the extreme knockback. They scatter stuff everywhere. I've also kinda lost my love for khelds as I've leveled other character. I absolutely refuse to take the ugly forms as I'd rather see my costume or display my costume to others anyway. A game that prides itself on customization really needs an option to hide the forms appearance. |
About Doms, Doms are awsome now, they dont use much end, in fact they often have great end useage from domination. You might want to give it a second look now that they do great damage.
Everything else I wont comment on.

No flames from me. I managed to mirror my dp/mm on test with my archer, fully IO'd for perma-hasten, and my archer is preferable in every way. Better ST chain all from 80 ft, better, more reliable AOE attacks and the nuke... Let's just say blue cons survive HoB.

I quite like the look of the Dual Pistols animations (except the bullet rain one - that looks stupid), even though some of them felt far too slow, but I disliked the different ranges and cone sizes - it just destroyed any in-set synergy - personally I would have preferred it if the entire set was range 60, instead of being a mix of 40, 60 and 80.
I find it strange how many people say they don't like Energy Melee since it was tweaked. I didn't find it any less fun to play afterwards, myself. Sure, old Energy Transfer was fun, but from the first time I got it I knew it was way overpowered. It is still a mainstay of my attack chain. (Then again, like I said in my previous post, I don't seem to mind longer animations as much as most people I know...)

Energy blaster - I don't hate KB, because it can be helpful - especially single target KB for trollers and such. However, the En blasters I've had on teams make no effort to control KB and scatter mobs. The rest of the team has to adjust all their playstyles, not play the way they want to play, and speed of their game for one player.
HEATs - I've said my piece on them before and ran afoul of the Kheld Kult. Not enough of anything, KB, nuissance spawns, etc.
I also doubt I'd play Elec secondary again (blaster, for example) because of the Bzzt that you can't turn off.
Any blueside wussies. Not since CoV came out anyway
I have exactly one corrupter (sonic/thermal) and frankly she spends more time on her back then whats strictly ladylike. I'm not the right personality for corruptors.
Stalkers. People who hide, are afraid. Far too poncy for my tastes.
Dominators. Boring to play, and poncy.
Veats haven't thrilled me much, but I haven't given any a fair chance yet
So, that leaves brutes and mm's. Anything MM has is good, but ninjas are the least interesting. Force fields are good power and intense boredom.
Brutes are ok.
Personally I was playing EM/ on two characters that, at the time of the nerf, had fairly weak secondaries survivability-wise - an EM/Elec Brute and an EM/En Stalker - they depended on killing things fast, and the nerf to Energy Transfer in particular just meant another long animation time that sometimes they didn't survive through. I think most people who hate EM/ now were probably playing the set when it was nerfed and had the chance to play it both pre-nerf and post-nerf - it's the comparative difference that irks us. Though for certain archetypes, such as Tankers, I'm sure it's still a perfectly respectable powerset - but I won't be playing it again.

thats easy empathy, I don't mind being team friendly as the next guy, but I do like being able to solo, and furthermore, I'm the very last guy you want playing a emp( or bubbler), in that I don't enjoy spaming buffs/ heals

He has always been a great Solo character. and a favorite of mine.
.
Sets I don't even want to try:
HEATS: These just seem needlessly complicated to me. I've tried reading some Guides before starting one, and I've never even managed to finish the read.
Empathy- no interest in being the doctor of the group
Sets I've tried and don't like:
Ice/Axe Tankers- I like Tankers, I like Ice/, and I like /Axe, but put them together? No thanks. My level 32 Ice/Axe is the absolute most frustrating character I've ever played. After 3 years, I occasionally pull him out and "try again", only to find myself literally screaming at the computer. Not fun. I thinks it's the constant accuracy and End problems that I have with him, despite being (over) slotted for Acc and End. On teams it's not so bad, but otherwise--forget it.
Mind/ - I had a Mind/Thorny Dom who was powerful. Unfortunately, he was the only alt I've made where it really DID seem like there was only one "best" way of mashing buttons. It got really boring after 22 levels, so I deleted him.
Elect/Elect Blaster- weak damage, many deaths; This is one of my first alts (Fall, 2004), and I just don't want to play him anymore. I think he's stuck at 25. He just can't seem to do basic missions without dying a LOT.
Most "paired" sets (i.e.- Dark/Dark, Ice/Ice, Stone/Stone, etc.)- only because I get confused as to what powers do what (all those similar names and effects!), and whether they're part of the primary or secondary. Plus, it seems a little limiting in scope to me.
My favorite characters:
Earth/Storm Controller (lvl 50)
MA/SR Scrapper (lvl 50)
Bane (lvl 45)
DB/Nin Stalker (lvl 36)
Claws/Invuln Brute (lvl 23)
WP/Fire Tanker (lvl 50)
Fire/Dark Scrapper (lvl 23)
Mercs/Traps MM (lvl 32) These have all turned out to be great fun!
Please try my arcs:
Arc# 63910 "Why Do Bad Girls Like Bad Boys?" (length=Long, levels 40+)
Arc# 401500 "How to Be a Successful Professional Criminal" (length=Very Long, levels 1-10)
Energy Melee/Broadsword/War Mace/Battle Axe: The concepts just do not appeal to me at all.
Super Strength: Blasphemy, I know. I realize it's a wonderful set, but the rage crash would drive me up the wall and I'm just not interested in the concept.
Dark Armor: I'm an an endurance *****. If, by level 35 or so, I can't maintain my end bar without any outside buffs, I will lose all interest.
Stone Melee/Armor: See the above, and the -jump and speed in Granite Armor would bug me greatly.
Empathy: I like to solo on off-hours/days. Empathy provides very little benefit solo.
And a handful of others.
-Recruited under Arachnos' "Equal-Opportunity Villainy" plan-
My first 50, years ago now, Was an Illusion/Emp 'Troller.
He has always been a great Solo character. and a favorite of mine. . |
On the other hand, I have played a few solo FF'ers. Admittedly, it did suck for a while and one could definitely say that Forcefields has fewer notable powers than Empathy.
Plant Control, for the sole fact that the Fly Trap creeps me the **** out.
TBH if I had it my way, I would make nothing but electric toons, but couple things drive me nuts.
1. The visuals on electric are just plain bad.
2. Most of the Electric sets are so far down on damage, not worth lookin at.
3. Electric Melee is ok as far as AoE, but as everyone else said, not enough ST.
4. End drain? Who decided that?
Because my favorite element had been made a laughing stock on here, I've had to stick to what works and what's easy.
Along with other sets, maybe some..... As far as blasters, it maybe easier to list what I will play... Blasters
Archery
Fire blast
Electric Blast
dual pistols
psychic
Wont play-
Ice Man
Battle axe
War mace
Invul
Ice armor
Energy melee
Ice melee
Dark blast
Poison
Widow
Don't like 'em and wont play them.
War Mace - my highest tanker is Inv/Mace and I despise the set with a burning passion that knows no bounds. My God, the damage is abysmal and easily resisted.
Trick Arrow - I plan to try it again soon but my first attempt at it (I5, I believe, when it and archery and sonics were rolled out) did not endear the set to me. Since I'm pretty sure the set's been looked at and/or changed so I might roll another when I'm bored but I'm not optimistic.
Sonics (both) - I have three but I just can't get into the sets for whatever reason.
Super Reflexes - Not a fan. I have an ice tanker who I love and used to have two SRs (katana and spines) but re-rolled them regen way back in Issue 4. Just didn't like SR then and I haven't seen anything that would compel me to try/like the set now.

Considering the vast ignorance his posts show, I'd have to agree.

Kruger and Dunning noted a number of previous studies which tend to suggest that in skills as diverse as reading comprehension, operating a motor vehicle, and playing chess or tennis, "ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge" (as Charles Darwin put it). They hypothesized that with a typical skill which humans may possess in greater or lesser degree,
1. Incompetent individuals tend to overestimate their own level of skill.
2. Incompetent individuals fail to recognize genuine skill in others.
3. Incompetent individuals fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy.
4. If they can be trained to substantially improve their own skill level, these individuals can recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill.
Dunning-Kruger Effect.

Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

If I could go back in time I would never have played a */Devices Blaster. That was a very painful set to me and I kicked myself over it so many times that I have bruises. But, when I made the character it fit the concept that I had in my mind. I will NEVER play another /Devices Blaster ever again.
Since that time I always pick powers first and then make up a concept that fits, instead of vice-versa.
As for what I will never play? I will probably never play a Traps Defender/Corruptor/MM due to my dislike of Devices. Otherwise I game for just about any other powerset and combination.

This, this, this
The animations are all things that will get you escorted off a gun range. The damage from the set is at best subpar.
2 minuses no positive. I just don't see playing it on a blaster. The only upside was the nuke was pbaoe non crashing, but given the animation time, recharge time and low damage, its rain of arrows ftw still.
