So when it says Dominatrix serves Tyrant in all capacities, that just means she cooks for him at home and also handles the catering for offical gatherings?

Castle, with all due respect and love to the OCR team (Niv, Ocho, Ava, EMpulse, anyone I forgot) Marketing can EABOD and DIAF. Never once have I seen an ad for our game in print or televised media, it seems like the most exposure we get to gamers who DON'T know about us already is via word-of-mouth from players or the occasional Massively interview. What are they DOING up their in their little ivory tower that's got you so tongue-tied? Unless they plan to announce Going Rogue with a grand world tour of trained chimpanzees telling people about GR though the power of interpretive dance, I can't understand what it is exactly they do here.

WoW is really the only major MMO which has consistenty had TV ads.

I think internet ads are really the way to go for an MMO anyways, since you can click on the button and then, within a few minutes, be downloading a trial. CoH has been absent from a lot of pages lately though (inc. PennyArcade, I believe) but maybe they are saving their advertising dollars for their new product. When GR really gets rolling they'll even get reviews on major websites like IGN, where a game like CoH barely gets any press these days.

Also, have they tried to get the PA guys to do a mission architect arc yet? Those folks command an army of affluent zombies.

Anyways, I fully expect to see a news update today or t'morrow or, at worst, next week (from Ocho's post, he seemed to imply the news item could slip from this week, meaning it was probably always meant to be a late week announcement).

I'd have to agree, at times I've thought the marketing/advertising department were only part time workers due to the lack of work they do (How about hiring some interns?). I mean the devs really shouldn't have to be communicating with the player base but are gracious enough to do so. That should be the job of marketing.

There was talk some time ago on the boards about "famous" people playing CoX, a very wasted opportunity IMO. If WoW can pay "D" list celebrities to do commercials that I doubt really play the game, I'm pretty sure CoX marketing could have gotten at least one celebrity to do a commercial. Especially considering how many comic book and superhero fan celebrities there are. But to be fair they may have tried, but in almost 6 years I would think they could have churned out at least one.

Our marketing guys are actually very good at what they do. The truth of the matter is that TV commercials are expensive and won't bring in enough new users to justify the cost. Our team gets us banner ads on sites like Ten Ton Hammer and they try very hard to keep our nearly 6 year old game in the gaming press -- which frankly is not an easy job. The fact that schedules change or planned features don't pan out as being feasible sometimes means that their plans have to shift, which causes delays in information release.

I would love to see a City of Heroes commercial on TV. The money just isn't there, though.

Curiously enough, this is also the motto of the Accounting industry and Stalin.

That part I think they do great. Somehow they need to figure out how to keep the existing playerbase in the loop with teasers that do not dilute their ability to offer showstoppers to the press, though, and I recognize that's not easy, but that's why they get paid the big bucks.

There's always Youtube. Its not like anyone watches TV anymore anyway. Not since television became a wholly owned subsidiary of Blizzard.

I understand the expense of commericals, but it's not like we're talking Superbowl ad here. If my local plumbing supply company can run commercials on TV why can't CoH? Granted it's local only. If you now there is a convention such as PaX, or Comic Con you can run CoH commercials in that area for a couple of weeks.

I hope you guys are giving promo packages of things like T Shirts out to TV show hosts like those on G4, or even actors that star in Sci-fi related shows such as Heroes. I know there have been some product placements in some shows in the past (don't know if it was on purpose or just coincidence), but for the most part, if you didn't know what the CoH logo is you would have never known.

Not meaning to sound nasty, Castle, but I've seen more net ads for the Other Superhero MMO than I have for CityOf. In fact, bar the 'Im a Hero, I'm a Villain' ads from the Mac Pack, I've never seen a single CoX advert. Ever.

Whatever they pay the marketting guys...well, I hope it ends up being worth it, in the end. Because I for one have seen no results from it.

I'm fortunate to have teachers in my Business Marketing Administration program (Sheridan College, Canada, for those of you animators and programmers out there) who take a different perspective. They've stated that the core of marketing is in developing and maintaining relationships with one's clients, partners, and customers.

Considering the popularity of YouTube, you probably wouldn't have to put a City of Heroes commercial on TV. And the best part is, sometimes you don't need to put a lot of money into something for it to be extremely popular.

I can imagine how difficult it can be to keep CoX in the press, given that this is a market which is notorious for short tempers and even shorter attention spans. Not to mention the fact that not all information is able to be released when the people responsible for it want to. Market conditions easily influence what information can be released due to the strong fluidity of a competitive environment.

All things considered, it seems to me that the strongest marketing tools you and the rest of the CoX team has is us, the players. I've not frequently seen communities as loyal to a product. Perhaps if there were some incentive for us to be marketing the game ourselves, the load on your marketing team would be lessened as a side-effect.

I have no doubt of that - but the question in the minds of the Playerbase is, what exactly is it the do that they are so good at?

So they get banner ads on the same ol' sites and issue press releases to the same ol' sites. It may not be easy to do, but it's straightforward, dull, and stale.

Let's see some guerrilla stuff, some creativity. Get Gregg Dean to draw and place a banner ad on the front page of Real Life. (Hell, give him a years free subscription.) Become a sponsor for Girl Genius. Work with the city officials of Paragon IN....

Lots of fresh ideas, not all of which require a great deal of money but which do require punching some holes in the sides of the box.

Which sounds to me like they need to shorten their decision cycles or work on widening their options.

Over the past few months, I've seen print ads for the "Other Super Hero MMO" in issues of Wizard (And possibly Toyfare, I forget).

It may be something you guys want to consider.

Heh... a thought just popped into my head while typing this, The Television and Dr. Aeon should both get Facebooks and battle it there as well as on the forums. But I digress...

For what's it worth, where I work, most of our business was generated through referrals and word of mouth. Unfortunately with other vendors that do what we do, and the internet, that doesn't work as well anymore.

People have too many options these days and need to be reinforced on why they should be using your product as opposed to the next guy's.

Anywhos, I still <3 CoH and hope it continues forever and ever.
