All Quiet on the Paragonian Front

I've noticed Dev chatter seems to have slowed the last couple days.

There have been a few announcements in the news, but nothing major or unexpected. Most of it pretty light stuff. Valentines event, contest winners etc. Nothing big really.

I'm getting the feeling that some big stuff is about to drop.

Or maybe it's just wishful thinking. Hard to say.

I'm a little disappointed, I was pretty sure at hero con they said beta would start by january 2010. Maybe I remember it wrong, or there is always the possibility of delay.

Still though, I can almost feel something is coming.

I would say take comfort in the fact that dev silence tends to mean that they're working on something, as to what, no idea, but they're working on something.

The dev chatter has been relatively silent for several months, not days. Most of what is commented on by the devs anymore is fan related, not game related.

True. But there was at least SOME chatter the last few weeks since the winter break ended. But the last few days there has only been like 1 or 2 posts by the Devs.

This is what they're working on right now. OF COURSE they're basically silent. Don't take their attention away from it. We want it done faster, not slower. The more they talk on the forums and the more interviews they do, that means the fewer meetings they're going to, the less time spent animating, the less time poking at code, etc. etc. etc. You don't want that, do you? I know I don't. I want them doing their jobs, not appeasing the masses with a pithy remark.

I understand that they are working on GR. I didn't say that I needed them to speak more or that I wanted them to take time from their work to answer this thread, (or the dozens of others like it.)

All I was saying, is this feels like that calm moment before the storm. The Devs are throwing little tidbits our way and buckling down at they gear up to start announcing and going crazy with info and hopefully beta, etc.

Though at this point my money is on Beta After the Valentines event, but we shall see.

Perhaps I will be surprised, they will use the Valentines event to keep all of those of us who aren't invited to closed Beta distracted while the closed Beta begins. Hard to say.

If you hear a "BOOM headshot!" first, you may need to invest in a new alarm system though

We had a very big announcement a few days ago about the restructuring of Paragon Studios. I imagine people are now slotting into their new roles and getting a feel for what needs to be done.

This is why you have project plans and timelines. As someone that works on many IT projects I know things often fall behind schedule, but we always find time to keep invested parties informed of what's going on. We put it into our project plan and let the communications people know when to pull the trigger and release info. So while it may not be the job of the devs to appease the masses with info, it is the job of marketing and/or advertising, that is if they want to sustain the player base.

Last week (or was it the week before?) we got some new GR "information" in the form of a screenshot, Avatars and a bio update (trying to be serious) from a dev. Which is more than they had to give, but felt more like "here's something now stop whining".

With that said GR beta is supposed to be at the end of the first quarter, 7 weeks away. I'd expect some real information before the month is out.

From what I recall people talking about after Hero Con, I especially want to know why there is an imbalance one of the three different secondary effects of dual pistols, and will it or can it be addressed before beta.

I for one am interested in where you get your exact information from, as those statements seem very certain.

After hero con people were talking about the secondary effects of dual pistols, fire, toxic and S/L? or was it the third had no effect. But that's part of the problem, unless you went to Hero Con everything for the most part is hear say

Hmmm I think it was 4 types, S/L, Ice, Fire and Toxic (or Chem), which was strange to me seeing that S/L is resisted in the game more than the other types

Usually when the devs are this quiet for this long, there is a big nerf in the works. Like, maybe they are going to half all the effects of controller secondaries, or maybe just lower damage for all ATs across the board or something. Maybe nerf Accuracy. You know how it is. Basically its usually something nasty. Or it could be Marketing, which is also nasty.

S/L rounds
Incendiaries
Cyro
Toxic

Its given that the standard rounds are 100%. Apparently the secondary types replace 30% of that damage with the effects.

That doesnt mean that, if an attack did 100 damage (to stop my head hurting with maths ><), it doesnt mean that it will be;

100 Lethal dam
70 lethal, 30 Fire AND effect
70 lethal, 30 Cold AND effect
70 letahl, 30 toxic AND effect.

That mean that, by simple dint of being standard, the basic rounds would get completely ignored.
What I would guess would happen is that 30% of the S/L w/e damage is removed entirely and replaced with SOME Fire/Cold/Toxic damage AND an effect. Effectively, whatever dalances out as 30% straight damage in combined different damage AND effect. That would make more sense, at least to me.

Here's the imbalance I see with the effects if someone chooses lethal only rounds:

Fire messes with oil slick
Cold effects with slows
Toxic effects ? (Puking would be fun)

But the lethal I think secondary effects should at least be -Def so they wouldn't be at a total loss, unless you have no choice but to replace lethal at some point with one of the other three. It's all a guess to me

My assumption is that either Standard rounds have something like -def, OR they do more straight up damage, to make up for being S/L

That's what I'm hoping for, but it's the selfish side of me that wants to make a Rad/DP and a Traps/DP defender and slot -Res Achilles Heels

Plus lethal is more resisted than the others, especially Fire/Cold. On the flipside, having two types of damage makes typed defense more useful against you, but I'm having trouble thinking of anything with high fire/cold defense that doesn't have equal or better lethal defense anyway. Actually, I'm struggling to think of anything with high typed defense, but not positional defense, in PvE at all.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

This is assuming that the level of damage turned into Fire/cold/toxic will be the exact same as the lethal damage. i.e. 100 -> 70/30

The 70%/30% divide might (Note, might. This is speculation) be simply how they divide up the effects. See the speculatory explanation in the post above.

So, it could be 100 lethal damage becomes 70 lethal damage with 20 fire DoT. Or 70 lethal and 15 cold damage and slow effects. Etc.

I wonder given the above scenario, at some point does ED render the lower damage difference btwn the types obsolete? And then factor in procs and set bonuses.

My brain will be a lot more at ease once we get some information, right now I'm going crazy thinking of build concepts/options...

They said at hero Con it was scheduled for Q1 - that's anytime from January first to March 31st.

They're obviously working feverishly, but I would speculate that some of the quietness over the past couple of months is due to the "big announcement" over the lead Design change.

I'd surmise that Matt Miller was not meeting managements expectations, and due to stress and health didn't think he could, despite the PR spin that there was no demotion.

Personally I think the i13/i14 debacle, the ridiculous over the top AE leveling response, and the woefully enept job Marking has been allowed to do for multiple years now, are all signs of poor overall leadership.

My guess is the brass has given management level ultimatums after reviewing last Quarters subscription numbers and the project status of Going Rogue and or i17.

And I'm sure the stress has turned into frustration for many of the dept leads, just look at BaBs a few weeks ago.
