Actually, it is. Let me state the blindingly obvious: your experience is far from typical. We get plenty of trial account players in here asking questions about gameplay, indicating that they installed and got into the game just fine.

Now for the bad news. Your CPU is a bit underpowered, you're kind of low on RAM, but your video card is GROSSLY underpowered for this game. This wouldn't affect installation but that card won't be able to run the game well.

That's for sure. An almost ten year old CPU and seven year old video card... Time for an upgrade!

It does meet the minimum specs (according to NCSoft) so he SHOULD be able to play but as I mentioned above he probably needs to set everything to minimum.

Also just an FYI to the OP: eventhough it says that it is "Downloading" to Fix the files; it usually isn't. Plus the 'Time' shown to completion is almost always incorrect by a huge factor. I do not know what it is using as a benchmark for completion, but it has been this way for as long as I have played (and downloaded) the game. Not a huge problem. Let it sit and do the work by itself, and you will have the game fixed in no time.

BUT also as stated previously: your rig is pretty underpowered for this game, not to mention what is in store for the game's upcoming upgrades. You 'can' play the game with your present configuration, but it will be on the low end of playability.

Also. If you want to get the 'good' download of the Updater; point your browser to this URL:

ftp://client.coh.com/US/

And chose which of the three forms of the Updater you wish to download. Good luck.

Minimum specs are very rarely a good benchmark to go by. The game's been updated repeatedly and some zones will be more intensive than others (I have to change my settings just to get Grandville to load) so they can be misleading, especially for a MMO.

Although it sounds like you just got unlucky with your install. Give it as many tries as you're willing to, and it should pay off. Thanks for letting us help you, you'd be surprised how many people moan and whine and don't seem to actually want help.

I ran CoH on a very similar machine circa I11 (a bit faster CPU, but the same video card and just 768MB of RAM) and it played fine once I turned down some graphics settings (just stay away from Grandville and anything that involves a lot of players in the same area such as a mothership raid).

Ok, thanks for the replies. It seems to be working now. Can't comment on game quality straight away, but the idea of having a permanent 'this is a trial' window in the centre of the screen is a bad idea. I'm aware my pc is old. I'm aware that i should upgrade it, but I would hope peopel respect that I don't have the knowledge or the money to do so, and I can't afford to buy a new machine either. It runs ok, for a trial at least, a little laggy around the Rogue Isles. I have the latest drivers from nvidia: 175.16_geforce_winxp_32bit_international_whql (that's the name of the exe from the website). if there are any better drivers I don't know where they are; it's like looking for a needle in a haystack and I would assume that nvidia make the best and most up to date ones. Thanks.

Yeah, the Rogue Isles are usually laggier than Paragon City (where you are when playing hero-side). City of Villains came out about 2 years after City of Heroes, and they did a little more detailing graphically.

Having never played the trial version I'm not familiar with the window in the middle of the screen, but if it's anything like the rest of the windows you should be able to drag it elsewhere on the screen, even if you can't close it altogether.

He window was added when the Trial Account limitations were. It cannot be closed, but it can be moved. Every time you zone, however, it resets to the center of the screen.

you can, except it resets every time you load a new area/screen.

limitations are fine, reducing the number of days the trial lasts wouldn't bother me either. This screen is just a bad idea.

To be fair, that would definitely be annoying.

I refuse to believe you just said that. This isn't WoW, no one is going to clamor to tear you down. Don't ask for people to do so.

I'm glad I never got a trial account...
An unclosable window? Really?

Advice, though; if you can save money to get a new rig (or get someone to build one, like I did recently) then you should find the game a lotta fun.

A couple of things to remember:

1) You're playing on a trial account. This is supposed to be just a chance for you to evaluate the game and see if you like it enough to subscribe for real.

2) You're playing on a trial account. The big "This is a trial" window isn't permanent...it's only there as long as you are on a trial account.

3) There is no difference in the client software between trial and real accounts. (just limitations coded in to the account-type itself). You will not need to uninstall or reinstall or patch anything (except normal game patches) when you go from a trial to a full sub.

4) You won't lose your characters if you UPGRADE the trial account to a full account. If you create a new full account, then it's a different account and you will lose the stuff that you've created on the trial account.

5) Remember: UPGRADE is good, Create New is (usually) bad (unless you specifically want to)

----

Overall, your machine is at the very, very low end for the game; and it sounds like you're running off of a dial-up internet connection as well. You should be playable, but you're definately not going to see all the "squee-factor" that this game has to offer.

EDIT: oh and as a quick indication as to whether or not this is a "good" game, just take a look at the registration dates of the forumites. It's a rare game that continously holds people for 5+ years.

Also keep in mind the limitations of your equipment (glad to see you got it working). For a while I was playing this game on a laptop, and it worked fine but I had to use low gfx settings. I recently upgraded to a relatively cheap $600 machine that runs everything on the highest settings (with 2 program instances, even!) and it really made a difference. Sure the gameplay is the same, and its not like I can do anything I couldn't before, but the water, shadow, and depth of field effects just add a lot to the game environment. Can't wait to see what they add in the upcoming Ultra mode!

Mad Briar - I have an idea of what your system is probably running like - your video card is better than the one I had when i started, anyway If you get the chance to upgrade your system, it will improve a lot for you.

Also, if you decide to upgrade to a full account :

Check Big Lots if you have one in the area - specifically for Good vs. Evil edition or the Architect Edition (I know the latter is still in big stores in places.) Both have some nice extras and a full months play - all the retail boxes do, either hardcopy or digital. I recommend the Magic pack for the free pack choice given by the AE edition.

Indeed, I never played the trial so never experienced that window. Glad you got it working though.

Also, while I do respect the inability to afford a new pc (nice ones obviously aren't cheap) I will tell you that having played it on 10 year old Dell and a laptop that runs it at the lowest settings, after getting a newer pc it made it so much more fun. Graphics aren't everything of course but they don't hurt either lol.

Anyway, good luck and hope you decide to stick around!

I didn't say the game was crap. In fact I made it clear I have yet to form an opinion on the game.

Trial reminder windows or anythign like that aren't going to stop the sort of people who make a living trying to sell in game money in mmo's. I can deal with it, but it is a pointless inconvenience.

You can team with who you like; that's the beauty of these games. But I don't play using dial up speeds. If you dislike my pc then consider yourself lucky you have something better. Or better yet offer something more practical than reminding me how old my machine is. I know it's old, but it's the only one I have and the game will either prove unplayable or it won't.

Telling me my pc sucks gets noone anywhere.

It's not for want of a better machine, believe me.

5 years ago when this game lauched, it was highly reguarded as the most stable initial launch any MMO had ever had. There have been minor issues in the last 6 years, but it sounds like the issues the OP is having are more related to the way he's trying to install the game then the actual stability of the software itself.

I never bought a box for this game. I just paid fees online and downloaded the game from the official website. I've never had an issue. I've installed it on 3-4 computers now. If you just stick to default settings and say yes to questions that come up, I've never had any issues. The only trick I've ever run into was once when I tried to run it from a zipdrive. I had to skip the updater by adding a tag to the shortcut (which means I had to have the current version of the game on the zipdrive). I wasn't able to directly update to the zipdrive, I had to copy the game to the default drive to run the update and then move it back to the zipdrive. (I was using a psuedo public computer I didnt' want to permanetnly save something to).

I don't know if the OP is trying something out of the ordinary, or he's just having issues. In either case, once you get the game working, it is a very stable game.

I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

I have an older machine than that in my other room my daughter used to play the game on. You should be fine on very low gfx settings. Yea it sux for a trial game to have that window up in the middle of zoning... but, I hope you come out of trial to see the other stuff past lvl 14. This game is still squeetastic and is about to be even better!

They're not telling you your PC sucks. They're merely warning you that, because your system is closer to the "minimum" or "recommended" specs (that are now several years old), you visual experience may be somewhat less thrilling than someone with an quad-core i7 with SLI'ed GTX280 rig.

Honestly, I blame other MMOs (WoW in particular). In many cases if you come onto the forum and make a post about having trouble getting the game running you will get nothing but abuse because clearly the game is perfect and you are an idiot. While the OP was somewhat aggressive I just viewed it as the inevitable reaction of someone who's encountered the less than tolerant communities of other games.
