Not impressed
I refuse to believe you just said that. This isn't WoW, no one is going to clamor to tear you down. Don't ask for people to do so.

As for the trial window. Yeah, I'd find that annoying too. Back when I ran the trial I don't remember a window at all. But that was more than two years ago and before all of the restrictions. Mad Briar, you can thank the RMT'rs for that.
Glad to see you finally made it into the game.
First of all welcome to the game. I'm impressed with the way you've handled a difficult installation (i.e. going to the forums to request help), as I usually don't have the patience to do similar. I've had a similar problem with another product when I used a trial account to bootstrap myself to a full installation after losing the original disks, so I can definitely sympathize.
Secondly, this game is very forgiving for older hardware (especially on hero-side), so while you may at times experience a less than optimal play experience the initial machine I ran CoH on was similar to what you are running.
Finally I agree that some of the limitations and features of trial accounts need to be re-examined, and I will convey your experience to the Dev Team. If you have any further feedback on how you feel about trial accounts I'd love to hear about them, if you feel the urge to PM me please do so as I always welcome good feedback.
Thanks for checking us out, I hope you decide to stay!

1.let trial accounts invite other trial accounts to teams as alot of people try these games in pairs or more of friends
2.Let people close this box or move it permantly cause people know they are on trial no point in reminding them every time they zone etc.
that's it i think the rest seems good, lvl 14 seeems like a good level to stop as that's when travel powers unlock and get a taste of the uniqueness of the game.
Well Mod8 since you bought it up, I would like to add two suggestions:
1. When someone sends a tell to a trial account allow them to use /reply to respond to it even though tirals can't send tells (I realize that this may be difficult technically
2. When someone sends a tell to a trial account have some sort of auto-reply feature that gives the sender a "this person is on a trial accoutn and can't respond through tells" response.

It's been brought up before. Lots of veteran players would be more than willing to help trial players out, show them around, give them tips... encourage them to sub up.
BUT... When there is no reply to our tells, it's hard to determine if the other person is just /ignoring or is on a trial. We know there is an auto reply for someone who's gone afk, it seems like there should be some way to flag a trial account in some sort of manner to do the same thing.
There's also been a suggestion to give trial accounts a special title/color to their name, but I personally would be afraid that would make them immediate targets for some of the, er, less-than-helpful population.

Ok, thanks for the replies. It seems to be working now. Can't comment on game quality straight away, but the idea of having a permanent 'this is a trial' window in the centre of the screen is a bad idea. I'm aware my pc is old. I'm aware that i should upgrade it, but I would hope peopel respect that I don't have the knowledge or the money to do so, and I can't afford to buy a new machine either. It runs ok, for a trial at least, a little laggy around the Rogue Isles. I have the latest drivers from nvidia: 175.16_geforce_winxp_32bit_international_whql (that's the name of the exe from the website). if there are any better drivers I don't know where they are; it's like looking for a needle in a haystack and I would assume that nvidia make the best and most up to date ones. Thanks.

As an aside, I think we all agree that the trial restriction window would be annoying (even if we never personally experienced it). Since we have the devs attention, you may help to change that.

No offense intended Mad Briar, none at all, lemme just say that I really enjoy seeing new players come and dip their toes in the Forums here, asking for help, maybe a little defensive after experiencing the player base/forums of other MMOs, only to receive what you will eventually come to realize is an entirely ordinary basket-full of helpful, polite advice and assistance, from everyone here (including the Mods).
I'll again relate my experience with a different game, that I was really enjoying, until I went on their Forums seeking help, and found it was populated primarily by moronic, cranky, abusive, non-helpful players, and power-mad Mods.
I have yet to play that game again. And I was enjoying it! But the Forum population soured my view of the game so much, I didn't even want to look at the icon on my desktop, and dragged into a folder to hide it from view.
Stick with CoX, keep coming back to the Forums, you'll soon understand why this is my (and others') favorite game Period.
Sure, the game itself is great fun, but more importantly, I think, you'll find the players are really smart, really helpful (heroic even), and at times really REALLY funny.
Welcome to the briar patch Mad Briar.
Hope to see you in Paragon or the Rogue Isles sometime.

Generally speaking, when a game (or any other software) lists "minimum hardware requirements", you should read it as "the software will run, but you WILL notice performance issues".

Respect? No one was disrespecting you. We're just warning you that you'll probably have some performance issues due to hardware.

My system isn't precisely old, and it isn't that current either, so i run at medium to high settings depending on the specific settings, but nowhere near maxing everything out. i really want to see the Ultra Graphics Mode shinies when they come out, and right now a new system is hard to budget. Upgrading my current system to run Ultra Mode would be equivalent to building a new one anyway since i would have to install a new mobo, processor, PSU, RAM and graphics card(s).
At that point i might as well spend the money for a new case, optical drive and HD since i usually give my old systems to friends or family who could use them.
Still, if you tweak the game settings you can usually get good performance and overall appearance out of CoH even if it won't be quite as pretty as it is on a higher end system. Mostly a matter of looking at what your system's strengths and weaknesses are and adjusting settings accordingly.

I think I probably had the worst computer in the CoV beta. I rarely got frame rates in the double digits, and never more than 15 fps or so. I'd like to think that my experience was somehow helpful to the dev team, but after a while I gave in and bought a new computer. I certainly can't afford to do that again for ultra mode.
But even with my old computer I never had any trouble at all playing CoH.

So far Defiant server seems empty. I've seen one other player.
Freedom usually has more people on it. I personally spend most of my time on Victory and Virtue but have noticed that there seems to be a fewer people on now than previously. The load times for new zones etc seem to be getting much longer. I upgraded my internet connection to twice the speed but the improvement was not really great.

When exactly do you play? It's possible that you're on and playing at a "dead" time on the server.
The two highest population servers are Freedom and Virtue. Most of the rest swap up and down the list at random. But even these tend to have lulls in activity on weekdays during "regular business hours".
I just had to reinstall it on my new Gateway P7908. It took a while, but it worked without a hitch. IIRC, on my old laptop I started out with the trial version and it did fine. There were a few things that had to be straightened out, but once we nailed it down, no problems and I ended up buying.
There's always hiccups with software, see if you can iron it out - it is great fun and not a game that requires LOTS of time to invest to enjoy the game.

Have you finished the tutorial? There's never many people in the Tutorial at a given time... and once you finish I'd suggest going to Atlas Park instead of Galaxy... it's much more popular. While in the Tutorial zone make sure you read everything, it actually does a decent job explaining the basics of the game.
I fully understand the problems inherent in a trial account; some of them were necessary thanks to the endless RMT spammers but some went a bit too far.
I can't speak for Defiant since I'm on the NA servers but by being in a level appropriate area with your flag up you'll probably be picked up before too long. I'd put in your looking for team message that you're on a trial account and want to experience the game... veteran players are usually very willing to help you out and show you the ropes. Something like "New player on Trial looking for team"
That's the nice thing about this game, we tend to attract a mature, friendly and generally helpful playerbase. Obviously there are occasional exceptions but as a rule you'll find your fellow players polite, helpful and friendly.
<edit>
Just wanted to correct a misunderstanding; since you're on Defiant you have the European version of the game... therefore you only have the option of playing on the EU servers. Freedom, Virtue etc are all North American servers and with a EU account you won't have access to them, just like my NA account doesn't have access to the EU servers.

I live in the UK so that's why they are the Euro servers (i knew what region i was working with). Server just seems devoid of life. Not sure what I can do if I cant message or group with other people on the trial.

Um, and try asking about the euro server community in the Euro Lounge in the "For Fun" section.

Unfortunately, trial accounts are very limited on what they can do because of problems we've had in the past with people abusing them. There are however still ways you can team with people.
1) Pull up your chat window (C) and click "team." You'll see a box here that says "You are not looking for a group" and a search comment below. Change the dropdown box to "Looking for any," which is a white circle. In your search comment, put something along the lines of "Trial account, please blind invite," or "Invite me, I'm on a trial account."
2) You have access to the help channel. Although a lot of people don't use this channel, you may get lucky this way. On your chat window (C) press the tab labeled help at the top. You can then type in the channel by typing /hc. For instance, "/hc Hello, I'm on a trial account and I'd like an invite to a team if anyone can oblige," or "/hc Can anyone invite me to a team? I'm on a trial account and I can't form my own." You may have to switch tabs between Global and Help to pick up other communications.
3) You can still chat in local, so you may be able to find some people in places like Atlas Park, around the Wentworth's buildings, or in Architect Entertainment buildings (the latter two can be found on the map, by pressing M). You can approach some players and type in local to let them know you're looking for a team, and are on a trial account. You may also just ask if someone can help you find a team because you can't chat using broadcast or tells. You may find some helpful players willing to find a team for you.
Hopefully those will help. I know it can be annoying to not be able to chat using the normal channels. But good luck to you!
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

Yah, if I were you I'd just stay away from games that don't work on the first shot altogether, something might happen, like, it might work, might realize something was being done wrong, might actually find what the issue was and gain some knowledge so if it happens to anyone else then they can know what to do. Yah, Skip CoH dude, it doesn't work. We all just hang out here pretending to have accounts and working games.
|
My advice to you, Beyeaj: quit posting crap in threads started by new players. Dude has a problem, other people are trying to help him, and you're not. If you're not going to help, keep your mouth shut and your fingers off the keyboard.

Mad Briar, if you're still hanging out here on the forums, you might be able to hook up with more EU players via the European Lounge forums, or the more specific forums for Defiant or Union (click the linkies ).
I also agree with the suggestion to put in a "search comment" as described by Dispari, so when folks look at the team search list, most will understand your limitations right off the bat.
For customizing your windows, keybinds, etc., take some time to go through the in-game menus thoroughly. Not only is there a very comprehensive options menu, but also (somewhere in there) there is a kind of guide to commands and shortcuts. Some of those commands have changed over the years, but most are still viable.
There are also several player written guides here on the forums that address almost anything you can think of, and as has been mentioned, if you have any other questions, by all means ask... We'll do our best to answer.
Finally, I think I can say we all hope you will enjoy the game. However, if, after testing the waters, you decide that it's not your cup of tea, we understand that too.

That, and it can be incredibly frustrating when things just don't work. I bought and tried that other cryptic game, but no matter what it just would not work with my video card. I still haven't played it (after hearing what's going on now, I may be lucky on that count)
