Good character names are running out, huh?

Unless they make it harsher it's not going to do much.

Are we? I just picked up "Pinball Mistress" for a knockback-heavy storm/energy defender.

(For anybody interested, "Pinball Master" is still available, but "Pinball Wizard" isn't.)

Umm, not sure I agree names are running out. I got Sub Sonic the other day and last week I got Doll Face, Black Amethyst and Killingzone and I still have a few more I like.

It was harsher and it didn't do much. That's why it's down to what it is now.

And that's actually my point every time this comes along. Name purges free SOME names, but any illusions that "good" names are held by inactive accounts are just that - illusions. The first name purge under level 36 on everyone inactive for 90 days and more freed up a few names, but mostly under level 6. And people were shocked to find that the names they thought it would free up, it didn't. Short of making names non-unique, nothing will change.

I'm just trying to say that, even in the current situation, there is still hope if you really want it.

Actually, you can go off precedent and make a pretty good guess that, unless something major changed, it won't do much than the first time they ran it under 36, when it didn't do much.

I'd like to see the same naming policy used in Champions Online: character_name@global_name.

So long as your global name is unique problem solved. Everyone gets the name they want and it doens't put a damper on the creative vision they had in mind for their character.

Hate the @global like CO used. It absolutely ruins all chat in that game.

What they should do for the name purge is simple. If an account has not been active in over 3 years, purge the names lvl 40 and under and give them FREE RENAME TOKENS... for if they ever come back.

I thought that didn't free up as many names as devs and players hoped it would.

I disagree with you about it ruining chat. It's no better or worse than trying to chat on CoX with the alpha numeric jargon that has become character names lately.

They have never done waht I suggested.

Was this dead long enough for this to be a Necro?

Either way, I just recently reserved Nuclear Arsenal for an upcoming DP/Rad. Was really shocked when I found it wasn't even taken on Test yet.

Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?

A: You crash into another one.

I secured Hipshot for my DP on Virtue and I really have been uber lucky with character names so I can't complain too much.

But I still think character_name@global_name is a great idea.

Just my two cents.

Probably.

On the other hand, something else that occurred to me about character names: I'd like to be able to use my OWN names more than once on a given server, i.e have more than one character by the same name on a particular server.

I've occasionally wanted to make identical characters with different powersets, to represent them having the versatility to change roles. Would also be nice (GR not withstanding) to have a character that can hop freely between red and blueside.

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

Only read the first post, so no idea what is going on in the thread.

But sometimes when I'm really stuck I'll just pick random words from the dictionary. That is how I came up with the names Careful and Helpless Purple. Not especially great, but they work. Especially since Careful turned out to be my overly aggressive Warshade.

My name is Ironblade and I disapprove of this message.
That naming scheme stinks.

All you do in CO for this is uncheck a checkbox not to show the "@GlobalName".. thought that was what everyone does there. Things look exactly as they do here in CoH.

They should go to this model so you can use any name I believe...and just set your own UI as you wish things to be seen.

What happens when you see two people with the same name, then? Without global appended, how do you tell them apart? How do you tell their chat apart? A non-unique, global-appended naming system fails for the same reason all of those fail - they need to be unambiguous in all situations but visible in no situation at all, which is an oxymoron.

Seems like our already-existing color-coding scheme (an option you may not have turned on) would be imminently helpful in that regard.

Besides, how often does that happen? I don't hear about it happening in CO, and I never really see people with similar names in the same area in CoX.

I'd gladly trade a little ambiguity for more naming options. Gladly. I mean, even if we didn't have some of the best UI people in the business to help us through this awful problem you describe, I'm a savvy interweb using guy. I think I could cope.

Except our already-existing colour-coding scheme works based off the ASCII of names, and two identical names would have the same sum of code digits. And if you alter it, then you end up yanking the system from under people. And even if you alter it, you still end up running against people with poor colour perception, poor monitor colour balance or just colours that look a lot alike. I have good colour vision and I still mix up the colours between cyan and teal, for instance. And even when I can tell between two colours right next to each other, I can't always tell which is which just by itself.

I don't know about Champions Online, but you don't see people with similar names in City of Heroes because the game forces people to deviate. The reasons everyone always complains that good names are gone is that they want Fire Man or Electro Lass, and those are OBVIOUSLY already taken. If they're taken and many, many people want them, then that results in many, many people having and using them.

Well, I wouldn't want this kind of trade, and I'm afraid I'm not very generous with arguments that encumber me so that other people can have what they want. I'm all for live and let live, but when it bugs ME, it has to do something for ME, or I'm not happy. I don't find unique names problematic, restrictive or in any way bad. As such, I see no need for a system to make non-unique names possible at ANY cost, no matter how small. Just as you don't mind the ambiguity but mind the restrictions, I don't mind the restrictions but mind ambiguity.

It's not always the case, but it's often enough the case to where it WILL spawn same names. That's the point. I don't want to deny people the names because they're bad, I just don't want ambiguity in the naming system.
