Cubical orientation

This is a sad day. My cubical at work has be rearranged such that both my monitors face the door. It wasn’t just me but everyone. Thus, people can easily see what I’m doing now. There is no good equipment or bodily re-positioning that I can do and my rear view mirror rarely helps.

How am I supposed to monitor the forums now?

Devs: Please redesign the forums so that they look like a MS Office application like Word or Excel.

One thing that can make it look a little less conspicuous is to disable pictures from showing in your browser. That will at least take care of the big City of Heroes banner on the top and player avatars / banners.

However, I'd recommend you review your work's Internet usage policies. Many work places have enacted Internet filtering programs that not only restrict what you can view but also log your activity. They may already know you spend time looking at the forums. Also, don't think by using a proxy service that you can get around this. (I used to do this for a living btw) That only makes you look more suspicious.

If your work allows you to browse non-work related material while doing your job, I'd still recommend making it clear to your superiors that you do it only during breaks or slow times. Having your boss already know about your browsing behavior will significantly blunt that "surprise" report from the HR department which tells him/her that you're doing non-work related browsing. In economic times like this, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Can't someone just come up with a MS Excel skin for these boards?

These days....yeah. Can't say that enough. Don't blow it, OP. No paycheck=no CoX.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

It can be a little slow, but I have two words for you: iPhone.

This.
My wife was fired from a city job for having a grand total three minutes of non-work internet activity on her login.
Right after she filed for maternity leave, HR started an investigation of her and found nothing, then a general investigation of the department's internet use was done and revealed that most of the employees in her department had done so, and in greater amounts. No others were fired, or even disciplined in any manner.

Man your employer is a real inconsiderate sonovab****. Where do they get off expecting you to do the job you were hired to do. It's not like they sign your paychecks or anything. What you do at work on their computers instead of your job is your own ******* business. You should file a grievance with the state.

I am unsure what intent I am supposed to take out of this.

Do I really need to explain that it's blatant over the top sarcasm?

*sigh*

Sometimes I really hate the written format.

I guess I also hate the fact that there are actually enough idiots out there that are sincere when they spout the garbage I was posting sarcastically that it makes some people question the intent of my post.

I hope that last run on sentence made sense.

I think the confusing thing about it is that your statement could be interpreted as a backhanded insult, insinuating that you think that the OP is a lazy good-for-nothing who spends all day browsing forums instead of earning his paycheck.

I wasn't trying to be backhanded about it. That's exactly what I meant. The OP's post reminded me of several co-workers I've had over the years that did exactly that and I and others were forced to do their work on top of our own, and when they got caught they defended themselves in a similar fashion to the one I described.

When I worked at AT&T as Directory Assistance we had one clown that hacked his computer and set it so all calls coming to his computer were automatically transferred back into the call queue to another employee.

He'd plug in his headset so he could log in, activate the transfer feature he set up then leave the office. He'd come back at lunchtimeto log out and repeat the process for the afternoon. With 500 people in the office it took them several months to catch him.

Now I've also worked at call centers where the employers didn't care if you browsed the internet or even played games between incoming calls as long as you stopped what you were doing and took the call as soon as it came in.

Edit: Now I'll admit I could be jumping to conclusions because this topic is a hot button for me, so if my assumption is wrong the OP can have my apology.

Was a bit confused until it clicked that you meant cubicle and not cubical... was starting to think about n-dimensional math again.
Anywho, considering most (if not all) companies nowadays monitor their internet traffic and can pinpoint who's doing what and where, the fact that the monitor is now turned to face the door should be the least of your worries. I'd consider that as a heads-up from the bosses that they know what you've been doing on the interwebz and are not pleased.

You're lucky you actually have internet access at work. Where I work, I don't. I have to "entertain" myself with Solitaire on the computer when I'm actually able to log onto a computer. Sometimes, being in security can suck. Other times, it just sucks less.

There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"

Yeah..... it sounds like your employer recognized they have a productivity issue and took simple steps to address it.

Word to the wise: the next step may be monitoring software to identify the problem individuals and make an example of them.

Yeah, seriously. And if they're looking to get rid of a few employees to cut costs, identifying people they can fire for contravening the code of conduct will save them the cost of redundancy/severance packages. Take the rearrangement as a warning, and hope you don't get singled out.
