They've intentionally told us very little about GR. It's way premature to try to conclude what it's worth.
That is why i said, "At this point..." and made sure to point out that I acknowledged that my opinion is based on limited information. And it's not premature to speculate; I'm not banking on this to be a bunk issue... on the contrary, I am hoping (and banking) there is waaay more to this than what we've been privy to thus far. [My current opinion is just that... my current opinion; which may or may not change dependent on futher disclosure]

Quote:
That said, you left out one big thing the devs talked about at Comicon: GR will include a new end game that will be far more difficult than any current level 50 content and will include a way to make level 50 characters more powerful but without raising the level cap.
That's not saying much... the Invention System pretty much did that for all level ranges and Purples did that more so for 50s. It would be great to see something different that would really make 50s more than herculean... but I would be less ecstatic if all it turned out to be was more Purples and 1 or 2 Accolades.

Quote:
I'm guessing that'll be a lot of content, not just one big Hami-style encounter because they made it clear that the end game stuff was a major part of GR.
I'm agree; 20 levels of content is a lot of content but it still pales against 50 or even 40 levels worth of content... even if they do tack on another 5 levels for endgame content.

Quote:
Sure, perceived value is subjective. Player reaction will be all over the map. Some people would pay $40 just for side-switching and everything else is gravy. I'm sure there will be others that look at the whole thing and just go "meh".
True, but I am not speaking of perceived value (heck, people pay big bucks for mass manufactured; 97 cent Hot Wheels); I'm referring to product parity... (going to a restaurant that you frequent often only to find they've started serving the same menu items, at a smaller portion, for the same price).

Businesses run on schedules and can only alot a certain amount of time for non-critical tasks.

In fact, Ryu's post illustrates why the CoH devs tend to keep mum on things far longer than we'd like. They're crucified on the forums if they talk about something that ends up delayed, scaled down, or even just takes a long time. If I remember right, it took about 6 or 8 months of steady work to do power customization, but the project was greenlighted nearly a year and a half before it was finally released. Can you imagine the drama that would have ensued if BaB had talked about power customization when it was approved? "Where IS it then? Nothing but broken promises!" And with all that time for speculation to escalate, tons of players would have been disappointed when it finally was released.

Of course, none of that changes my desire to know more about GR nowwwwwww, dagnabbit!
I think you all are just missing my point completely. Its not just the broken promises. Its the fact that I know they can do better in terms of real content when you look at issues 1-3 and issue 5. Thats what I am saying. You can all it opinion if you want I dont care. The thing is I dont want to see this game fail. I have put too much time effort and money into it. Right now because everything is basically dead to me, I have no real reason to log in. I been playing Aion since its release and I have logged into CoX a total of 3 times since then and that was to move a few items around when I did the free server transfers. Even prior to Aion most of the servers I logged into appeared dead. Yeah I know some of you prefer the ghost towns but I dont. I want things to be the way it used to be when more people played. If this expansion is too light on content people may not buy it or come back to CoX. Having more subs means more money for more new projects.

No, it'll be entirely new. The devs are phrasing this a little awkwardly because they've made it clear they aren't going to raise the level cap, but they also want to convey it's more than just normal slotting can do now. In the August '08 marketing survey they talked about something called Universal Enhancement Slots, that once fully slotted would give you power roughly equivalent to a hypothetical level 60.

We have to take that with a grain of salt because they may have abandoned or heavily changed the mechanism, but at least in August '08 that's what they were plannning.

In case you don't remember that survey, when it was leaked by Beefcake, a lot of people wrote it off as fabrication. Then when it was acknowledged by the devs that it was real, they wrote it off because it seemed too good to be true. Then as one thing after another that were on the survey have been revealed (AE, side-switching, etc) it became clear that it was really a list of stuff they had planned to do over the next couple of years. HOWEVER, in an old thread BaB warned not to take it too literally because some of the things mentioned have been dropped or heavily changed, and lots of items that weren't on there are in the works.

agreed. I wish they would at least do a quick post "we are working hard on GR. Preparing for beta. We will have it out as soon as possible." Or "working hard on some kick *** feature, taking a little time to get it right. Hopefully you will really like what we have for you"

We can call it opinion because that's what it is. Maybe you don't like power customization, but I do. I think it's one of the best things that we've gotten. I think Cimerora itself is pretty bland, but the ITF is one of the most run task forces in the game. RWZ is one of my favorite zones.

I'm sorry if you don't like some of the recent additions. The devs can't please everyone all the time, and there will always be some changes that you don't enjoy. But just because you personally don't think an issue was "good enough" doesn't mean the devs are breaking promises. No dev ever said "We promise that our next issue will please Ryu."

I would hope this would go hand in hand with expanding 50 level content beyond the endgame concept. Marginal content quantity is still marginal content quantity no matter how buff your 50 is. (AE is too abstract and fractured for me to consider it as true post-endgame content). Being able to get another 50 levels worth (quantity-wise) of new connected storyline sprinkled through contacts that span back to one's level one days and across faction borders would be quite the feat; IMO.

You still arent getting what I am saying. The content we got recently just isnt long enough thats what I am talking about. There only so many times you can run those short arcs. There are so many times you can re-color powers. What we got was enough to keep a person busy for a week at best. As for as the AE its just turned into utter phail because its too hard to design a mission arc that is rewarding and at the sametime not bland on the story. Because of the difficulty of some the uber critters some folks make many arcs arent worth running or impossible for some powersets. Lastly the main reason I didnt like the M.Bison TF was because it just felt like it was half done compared to all the other TFs in the game. Its like it was something they thought up 5 minutes before they pushed it to the servers. And I am not going to get on how broken the encounter was initially. People still ***** about it today so I am not the only one who hated it.

I would like to see something like this. So far I have only seen one arc in the game that does this and thats the Snake arc that villains get in the 40s. What I would like to see is an updated version of the skulls and hellions but with level 50 powers, as well as the outcast. Maybe have Frostfire break out of prison and get juiced up on something that boosts him to AV status with more deadly powers. Basically have you go and defeat all the main villains you helped put behind bars that escaped. And for the love that is good with the game please please please devs give villains some actual content thats you know, villainous? instead of being sidekick to the heroes. This stuff needs to be no less evil than the Westin Phipps stuff. As far as I can tell that to me was the only contact in the game that truely made you feel evil for what you did. All the villain contacts should have been this way. I am not saying we need to go out and murder, mame, sexual assault, rob or kidnap every person in sight but at least give us an evil purpose behind the actions we do.

As much as I prefere to negative rep EvilRyu he does have a point in that last post.

I really do enjoy seeing characters and enemies I faced earlier in the game show up again. It gives my game world a feeling of consistency.

City of Villains does this at a few points [You turn the hero Pryss into a Villain early on, then meet her again after she's been taken over by the Devouring Earth. Same with meeting Faultline, Fusionette and Penelope Yin in Faultline, then running into them again in the Rikti War Zone.]

So it seems as the devs are moving forward, they are creating that kind of storyline in that manner. We can hope that Maelstorm and Desdemona show up alot to the point where you get to know them.

Something I'm not rushing the devs with but am curious about is when the next minor bug fixing patch is coming through. A few things broke in the past issue and when the new booster was released and were mentioned to be in the pipeline to be fixed but didn't hit the last patch before the winter break.

The previously mentioned things (CoP,Vault) are the things that got closest to being released - that were previewed - that were maybe even live for a brief time - but then canceled (Vault) or indefinitely postponed (CoP).

As a software developer myself, I know this just happens by the nature of some things turning out to be more difficult than they seem to be worth to the guys in charge.

There were a few earlier things that were suggested were on the plans but then never panned out.

- Epic ATs that would be opened by some other method than getting to 50: hinted names were given as well, "blood of the black stream" and "avilan" and so on.

- The whole "super secret out of combat system" fiasco where the result was something like "It turns out it's not fun, so it's canceled" (though remnants of it became IOs)

- Bunch of costume parts shown, then revoked, in CoV beta... fur shoulders like the Tuatha have, open necked blousy pirate shirt being the two I remember specifically

And, give them some credit, Devs did recently add something (I think.. correct me if I got this wrong) that they had promised years before, back in Issue 4: The Arena contests that gave the "weight class" badges.

Some years back, I made a list on here that had all the things asked for on the boards that made it into the game. There had to have been hundreds of items on that list. At best, I bet this list will make it into the teens. Way, way shorter. Credit where it's due: our devs do a good job.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I think when GR will be realesed all there worlds, which means CoH, CoV and Pratoria will somehow be united. So if you are done with all the stuff redside, just switch and enter a whole world of new content blueside. sure we all have run a synapse-TF, but I`m curious to see how my Mastermind and his bots will take on the Clockwork King and his bots.

In the meantime I`m making origin stories for my GR-characters in the AE

Nope. We didn't get any news for a month. People complained. The people who run the game were probably listening and suddenly we've got a bunch of news and changes. Maybe this was coming anyway, but they specifically addressed the complaint and gave an explanation. It was a legitimate complaint and hopefully we won't go another month without any updates, and if that is the case, good job to those who run the game, and thanks for listening and responding to our concerns.

If I recall correctly, they said beta would begin early first quarter 2010. With the dramatic changes, and the fact we still don't have any real info about GR, I'm wondering if they are behind schedule, hence the silence and internal changes, possibly due to whip cracking from higher-ups.

I really hope they improve their community relations dept. The latest news is informative but there isn't a lot to it. CO has constant updates but their game is just too lacking right now - hopefully CoX can get into that mode and update frequently.

I also get the sense that we are not really being told the whole truth here...call me a conspiracy theorist but they tend to keep a lot quiet even when they tell us about stuff. Ah well...they have some good reason to do this, I guess

This thread can die now.

Yesterday, War Witch posted NEWS over in this thread:

Yes you read that right.
News was posted about GR.

Now someone can start a brand new thread over how long it's taken since the last GR news.

Okay I keep seeing this thread and just have to respond. Guys this is nothing new! Back when Cryptic and NC Soft shared this game the exact same thing occured with numerous issues. Probably the closest example to this was Issue six which added, for the frst time, SuperGroup Bases. Every time I logged on the same questions kept popping up in broadcast. "Has anyone heard anything? Did they announce a release date yet?" It got so bad as time drug on and the Devs were busy fixing whatever bugs were delaying start that if a regularly schedule maintenance shut down took even five minute longer that the maximum two hours everyone was sure it was because they had loaded the Issue and it would go live in a day or two!

All the reasons for "No News" have been listed here. The Holidays just ended and while you may like to think that the Devs are just mindless geeks willing to work day and night to get out that new issue you want... fact is they were probably on vacation at home visiting relatives. We just got word of several changes in management with War Witch taking some of Positron's duties.. I've switched jobs before in the past and right now she may still be trying to figure out the shortest route to the nearest bathroom. Sending out a press release when there may or may not even be any news to release is not high on the priority list. We are talking a major new release. This is not "hey we revamped the Hollows and here's a few new powers sets" This is about the same as when the first release COV .. they are creating a whole new world to battle in and as they go along they are testing, finding, and then trying to fix the bugs.

What I do now is.. once I see it's in OPEN Beta where the players can go in and help find the "little" bugs that don't show up until you add a lot of people running around I just don't worry about it. Historically once it's in Open testing, unless they find a HUGE bug that needs to be repaired, in a few weeks to a month you will see it go live. Don't forget they also have a habit of not having two things happen at once so let's say they are all ready to release in early February. Okay what's just about to happen in game? The yearly Valentine's Day missions in Pocket D. Players live to get in there and earn those badges on any new characters they have created since last Feb and they will delay release until that ends and probably add a week or two between before even thinking of releasing it. PLEASE DO NOT READ THAT LAST STATEMENT AND START RUNNING AROUND SAYING "Wicked_Wendy says it's coming out in late February!" LOL Like most companies they are very careful not to make promises they may not be able to keep. In other word "If we don't tell them we are ready and will release in two weeks. If something bad comes up that delays things for a month they can't get angry because HEY YOU SAID IT WOULD BE OUT NOW!"

Relax a little and enjoy the game.. Go join an ITF and take out your frustration beating up Romulus or a Stateman TF and pound on Lord Recluse for a while. Soon enough we we all have the chance to start beating on Tyrant and his crew in their world.
