I had a sub for a long time but I believe it was 10-12 years ago I stopped it. I don't know if it is horrible now or it was just so great when it first started and it couldn't maintain that level.

I still remember being so excited with each issue back then.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

from the PCGamer mags i've read, they have a tendency to play up the newest game out and take anything in the same genre and beat it down.

That sounds about right. I know I used to like them for their information and general style - and I wasnt' subbed, so this was higher newsstand prices. But it was around that same time I started wondering why I was wasting money on them. I pick up the occasional issue when I see them in the store and just... "eh" then put it back down.

Sometimes, it's not about what you say. It's how you say it. Still does not make it a good idea.

...I only really get it for the covermount nowadays. >_>

If anything, I take more notice of Total PC Gaming than anything else now, but even then, not a great deal much more, but I've still yet to find crippling fault with them.

I may not be looking hard enough though.

I typically play on Virtue, and I haven't noted a lesser headcount (either when looking for teammembers via search, see the crowds in Wents, etc..). The only thing I have noticed is the server bulbs when logging in. For months, both Virtue and Freedom servers were at least yellow during prime playing times. Post=I16, they're often green, just like the rest of the servers.

So, at least for two servers, this does seem to indicate possible lower populations. Even so, as others say, I've yet to see a noticeable decrease in team invites, etc.

i've heard rumors that during the i16 release Freedom received a hardware upgrade, but i haven't found any official statements that confirm it. The last couple of weeks Freedom has shown a lower load than Virtue, which seems a bit odd since in the past it's almost always been a fair bit higher.

Still, there are some shiny new MMO's that just launched, and schools starting up always reduce population around this time of year, so it's hard to say.

I realize this is treading ancient ground but a friend of mine recently started the game and spent the first 10 levels complaining about endurance (on a tank). Then I told him the path to Stamina and the next 10 levels were largely spent on getting the required powers to get (A) a travel power and (B) Stamina at 20. Which meant anywhere from 6-10 levels of not getting any sexy new attacks or nifty things (I say 6-10 because he probably did think the travel powers were cool).

On the plus side, he said Stamina was game changing for him and he's now in his 30's. He also seemed to be getting bored with the office/warehouse door missions but had a blast joining me on some RWZ arcs (thank you, super side kicking!) invading rogue Longbow bases and running around the Shadow Shard fighting pseudo-Positron & pseudo-Manticore.

Another friend who joined had faded away. I think she got tired of the repetitive nature of the early levels between the repeating tile sets and constant breathers between fights. I understand the xp boost is to help address this so I know the devs aren't unaware. Just commenting on my recent experiences.

I miss Computer Gaming Magazine very much. (I think now they run the 1up.com website, but the magazine was still my preferred way of having it.)

i do believe that freedom got server upgrades which would explain the shakeyness and unstability on the server since i16. and just for the record...the dots have nothing to do with server population any more. they indicate server load now.

IMHO 'nothing to do after level 20' was plucked out of thin air.
That's when the game gets interesting.

That's because you don't know what you're talking about.

If you stand on the corner drooling down your front and yelling about the Black Helicopters, don't be surprised when people act like you're crazy.

Ya know there was a time when this game was all about street sweeping. Perez and even the Hollows were packed and people were complaining there was no motivation to run missions. Now, we have content out the backside and only get half-debt in missions and now the complaint is that the servers "LOOK" empty. There's just no pleasing everyone.

The entire Paragon Studios marketing department is a guy named Ross who sits on Positron's shoulders and tells him not to say anything ahead of time.

...I forgot what experience means.

You know why you can't find a team? I'mma tell you why you can't find a team, and guess what? It doesn't have anything to do with server population.

You can't find a team because you just don't know how to find teams. I'd bet nearly all my influence that you probably just go to a level appropriate zone and start yelling in broadcast. Newsflash: That doesn't usually work well anymore unless you're playing at the peak of the peak hours.

I can get on and piece my own team together in about 5-10 minutes, or find one in a global channel in about the same amount of time or less as well. Your problem is you expect the teams to go to you instead of going out and finding them yourself.

Emphasis mine.

I notice that many of the complaints I've seen about server population don't claim that there's a problem finding teams so much as there is a problem finding 8-man teams.

I guess I don't understand--what's wrong with smaller teams? Why is a team of 6 or 4 or even 2 no good? Why is 8 the magic number? Just because it's the max? What if they increased the limit to 10? Would teams of 8 no longer suffice?

Not to mention the ability to now set spawn sizes regardless of actual team size, I agree with you.

If I can get at least around 4-6 people but I have trouble filling it out with more than that (usually I don't though) then I just go ahead and roll with it, and with a decent enough team you can usually take out spawn sizes fit for an 8-man team with fewer people.

PC Gamer still exists?

I'm shocked.

To be fair, Statesman was doing about 90% of that complaining.

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

I don't know if there's any more to the actual marketing department than Ross The Marketing Guy. I suspect there are also marketing/advertising people who work directly for NCSoft rather than for Paragon Studios, and some of their efforts probably go toward City of Heroes.

Aside from its being small, though, the issue isn't so much that there's no advertising for the game as that it's pursued a marketing strategy of "retain subscriptions" rather than "bring in new people and let churn happen." The emphasis on reactivation and referral programs, veteran rewards, and everything promoted through the official website reflects this. The release of the Architect Edition was the first major outreach to nonsubscribers in a long, long time.

Supposedly, this game does extremely well with retaining subscribers, so it's difficult to fault the marketing department's strategy from that point of view.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Burning building in Steel Canyon or the Troll Rave in Skyway. Something that players can participate in if they choose without disrupting others. Maybe a non instanced bank robbery and getaway attempt? or a family mob war after a Don gets taken out to fill the power vacuum? or perhaps all crey power suits shutdown for 60 seconds after a virus is loaded into a mainframe?

get enough of these events and you can give the appearance of randomness and consequence. set them on a timer so you dont have ten bank robberies running in the same zone at the same time. you could even chain them. Bank robber gets away a mission becomes available " recover the diamonds (or other item of power)" , fail that and extremely well armed Hellions/Outcasts attack the police station in Kings Row to break out a prisoner (lets call him bob), Bob gets away, a story becomes available where you have to track down and re-arrest him.

Point is, your mission triggers an open world event, not an instanced mission that others can join in on if they want or ignore and continue about their business. I love the invasions but I can see why players would feel forced into participation or resent the interruption to their playing time.
