Does your play-style match up with who you are in RL?
I play a Scrapper - but spend a lot of time helping people - not sure what that says

City of Heroes comics and artwork
But what if you play a lot of different types of characters?
Still here, even after all this time!

I'm a placid, non-violent sort, and often find myself giving someone a hug and talking them down in a stressful situation.
As my author-avatar Plant Controller, I lock down gangsters and monsters and exhaust them into surrendering.
Kind of like hugging... except with plants!
Yeah, it's a stretch. But I sure couldn't play that character with a sword or fire blasts or whichever.
Not even WHAT you play - I'm asking more about WHY and/or HOW you play.
Me: Why? I like pretending to be a superhero and help out.
How? I play for fun first and foremost - it's not about getting xx heroes to 50 as quickly as possible, or min/maxing my 50s, or badge-hunting, or making billions on the market - I just do whatever seems fun to me at that moment (often this involves bouncing around Atlas healing/buffing/SBing lowbies on the street - no xp, no inf gain involved, I just think it's FUN).
Tend towards building the same sort of characters in CoX as I play in fighting games.
Zangief, Hugo, Birdie, Jack (from the various tekken games) are the sort of characters I play.
Which is odd considering my first character was a bots/FF MM...
Mind you I do love all things mad science!
I mainly play Controllers.
-ummmmm yes
I'd say it does in some ways, and doesn't in others. In real life I'm the quiet, reserved type who tends to stay in the background, and my main character is a Broadsword/Dark Armor Scrapper. With Broadsword, I'm on the front lines carving up the opposition with a confidence I usually lack in the real world, while with Dark Armor, I do so in a more subtle and intellectual manner that is more like my real self. I guess you could say Dark Armor reflects what I am, and Broadsword reflects what I wish to be.
Currently published Mission Architect arcs:
Arc ID# 70466: From the Abyss.
Arc ID# 403174: The Serpent's Revenge.
Arc ID# 534236: The Clockwork Angel.
So can we take that to mean you tend toward being a "control-freak" in real life? Freak, of course is too strong, but are you the one in "control" of your household? In what ways?

I own whips and cuffs, so don't "F" wit me!

That's an easy answer. In this game, I play primarily Scrappers. In real life, I'm not a violent person and physically quite a bit of a wimp, but it's not about being physical for me. To me, it's the fact that Scrappers are a no-nonsense, direct AT, which allows me to simply get down and get the job done without having to bother with fancy tricks and cheats. If something needs to get done, I'm going to just go and do it.
And then on the other hand, it IS about having power. In this game and in real life, I enjoy having the confidence and security in my own ability to handle at least day-to-day activities without them turning into an epic struggle of cunning and ingenuity. I enjoy a character who's strong by default and needs especially hard enemies to be in danger a lot more than a weak character who is always in danger, but is a "challenge" to play.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Let's see...
In real life, I'm a bit of a control freak, who has to know what everyone around me is saying/doing at all times. I tend to be a bit of a pack rat (although not as much as my mom, thank god) who never bothers to clean very much. I'm a bit obsessive (at least with the forums). I'm an older sibling. I have a somewhat twisted sense of humor (like my dad). I'm a trekkie who didn't watch anything after "Star Trek: The Next Generation", since Roddenberry died during that, so anything else doesn't count (I did watch the movies, though, and the latest one was AWESOME!). I'm an adult teenager (almost 20, thank god!), so I'm still a little insecure about certain things, but too lazy to do anything about them.
As such, Masterminds and Controllers are my favorite ATs. I tend to preach a "tolerate other players" message, especially when it comes to AE. I tend to be a bit laid-back (yes, I still live with my parents) and I'm not easily enraged. I have way too many alts, and seldom roleplay. I'm in this for the fun, as well.

Fascinating. Thanks for this thoughtful, insightful reply.
More like this please!

In real life I'm lazy, somewhat timid, scatterbrained and a little dumb.
In-game I'm a minmaxer and I take planning in advance to extremes. I have purpled and PvPIO'ed builds whose recharge requirements are calculated based on the animation time of my attack chain. I smile whenever I see someone state that they play the game for fun, not numbers. The false assumption is that anything to do with the "technical" side of the game must necessarily not be fun.
My extensive planning goes beyond just IO builds and statistics. For those of my characters who took Hasten, for example, I designed their costumes' color schemes to match the power's gold-orange glow. (I also considered the build implications of not taking Hasten, balanced against costume considerations.) I spend long months agonizing over my choice of name, concept, and little costume details like shades of color. I refuse to get Day Job accolades that don't fit the character's history (and have rerolled one character who accidentally picked up an extra badge).
I'm also a shameless powergamer. There's just something terribly cool about running into a boss while playing a story arc, noticing it's not falling over instantly, and going, "oh, it's an AV... this will take a little longer than usual."
I tend to be more likely to play what I wish I could be.
Of course this is scary because I tend to play goal orientated chibi's.
<Being a little shy of six feet, 200lbs and ADD makes the above pretty impossible.>
Play as a villain
....
..
hate the world and take people out by range.

I leap and throw punches at objects(sometimes people if they're really bad) irl.
Ingame: Mostly play scrappers. Tough, fit, fearless and powerful adversarys of evil!
Reality: An overweight wimp
Our survay says! *Egh Ergh!*
I wouldn't really consider this to apply to me in what I play, as I play all-sorts. However, I can probably see some connection.
My only characters that last past say level six are the ones whose mindset I can really get into, understanding the character, who they are, what they do. I also live in my own little imagination-world and will often drift off and have to be snapped back to reality.
Could this be a connection at all? A childish "play-time" scenario?
more or less
I started playing with a blaster, IRL I'm an EMT but the close I get to starting medic school the more I get into playing my emp, it's to the point now that AutoPulse is replacing Volt as my main.

Thunder is good, thunder is impressive, but lightning does the work.

I play Controllers and Blaster for the most part, although I have rolled up a few Defenders lately.
The only title I use on my heroes is "Protector of Innocents"...
Yep, I am a real Silver Age sort of hero when I play.
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
My playstyle matches perfectly and always has.
Ingame, I tend to stay to myself until such time as I meet folks I vibe well with ("People will judge you by the company you keep") and I'm the same way in real life. I'm a hyperactive achiever concerned with efficiency both ingame and in real life. However, that's by necessity since efficiency is important when you're always trying to fit 30 hours of activity into a 24 hour day. I'm no Adam Smith but I do have some expertise in finance (specifically offshore banking) so I do engage in market operations in MMOs I play. I'm a dabbler in real life (with businesses and interests in a variety of different industries) and in CoX, I have at least one of every AT (though scrappers, brutes, blasters, and tankers (in that order) dominate) over level 20. I also "dabble" in a wide variety of different MMOs (both pay to play, free to play, and combinations of both).
I'm still very much a big kid but I'm not a hoarder. I'm a collector (as the arcade in my basement is testament to) which kinda explains why my main base is always in need of more salvage containers and enhancement tables. I work a lot, play a lot, and sleep rarely and often find it hard to stick to one character for long stretches of time (which can also be said for relationships - I get bored easily). I attribute that to being a prototypical free spirit Aquarian. Which is what I also attribute to the fact that every one of my characters, in every MMO I have ever played, has an extensive backstory written up (even if I've been unable to synopsize it to cut & paste ingame).
Ingame, Mastermind would probably fit me best but I don't like the way the AT plays because it mirrors real life a bit too much for my liking. If I had to admit it, I love to fight (gunplay and all) but I've always been prevented from doing so much of the time ("We can't have you catching cases and doing bids. You're more valuable on the outside") so I gravitate to scrappers and brutes and, to a lesser extent, tankers.
But yeah, I tend to go to extremes with everything. I work "too much", I play "too much", etc. The only thing that doesn't match is the fact that my girls are, well, girls and I'm not.

Most of the characters I play are very self-reliant. In real life, I think most people suck.
I am also highly detail-oriented, a bit of a perfectionist, and I enjoy having long-term projects to work on. In game, I enjoy Mission Architect, base design, and working on my characters' builds as I level them up.

Scatterbrained, a little of everything, I like coming up with RP reasons for everything I do. Yeah, pretty much.
I am a cranky soloist at heart in both real life and the game.
For me I've found that I play buff- and heal-heavy Defenders and Controllers because they fit well with the "heroic" aspect that drew me to this game in the first place.

Sometimes I need to bring out one of my Blasters after a rough day at work, rough commute, fight with the gf, etc.
But I find that the "care-bear" aspect of buffing and healing matches up pretty well with who I am in RL - I'll always stop to help a confused-looking tourist...just TODAY I found a Blackberry on the subway and made sure it got back to its rightful owner (not the first time I've done this)... I'll give give my seat on the subway to seniors, pregnant ladies, disabled, etc...
Wondering if the same holds true across the board.
If you've got alt-itis - would you by any chance be a hoarder in real life?
If you spend a lot of time in WW/Black Market - are you a financial high-roller in real life?
If you spend a lot of time building/tweaking your SG base - are you a "nester" or perhaps an actual architect in RL?
There are other comparisons/links I could suggest, but let me leave it here and see what y'all come up with...
