Does your play-style match up with who you are in RL?
In-game: I enjoy playing all ATs and aspects of the game (except roleplaying, haven't tried that) available.
In Real: I can do one thing, and then do the opposite. Sometimes I prefer to be behind the sidelines, and other times I like to be in front (Tank?). I'm a good follower (can listen to directions and work hard), but I've been invited/attended leadership conferences in DC. I can sit at the computer for days and be lazy (I hate cleaning), but I love sports and being active (Kayak, Run, Bike, Hike, every day/week). It all depends on the scenario.
In-Game: I play Hereos about 99% of the time. I only have one Villain atm.
In-Real: I don't really have a single bad bone in my body (imo) and I dislike gloominess.
In-Game: I like to set long term goals, such as soloing an AV, earn badges, earn a billion influence, lead an active SG, etc.
In-Real: I like to accomplish things, and have a list of things I want to do, such as go to Italy (going in two years), learn archery, go bunjee jumping, write a book, build a computer, etc.
In-Game: When I'm only socializing, I tend to jump and run all over the place.
In-Real: I have a tendancy to have the need to be moving most of the time.
In-Game: If someone's biding for attention (Trolling, Sadastic People, Etc.) I just ignore it, instead of giving them what they want (a reaction). I very very rarely actually get mad, only frustrated with myself if I do usually.
In-Real: I find drama really pointless, and usually walk away unless it's actually a serious topic all around. I've never 'hated' someone, or remained angry with someone for more than a day.
In-Game: I won't join something such as a task force if I think I'm incapable. Ex: my fire tank can't tank the ITF with his current build and I sometimes won't join something I have no prior knowledge of it (I read up on things usually before doing it).
In-Real: I won't join something if I think I'll suck at it, and I'll probably practice on it in descretion before doing it.
Err did I go off topic? Did you mean like, I play a healer and I'm a doctor in real kind of thing? hehe oh well :P
At Work I'm pretty much a Mastermind. i have my minions that i give orders to and have them carry out my orders.
my job title is "Controller" oddly enough.
during my off hours i'm pretty much a Tank, taking the heat off my friends so they can get things done, and even if only because i'm a <CENSORED> magnet i think.
I'm a joke-spouting nut...
In game and out.
My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw

Anyone want to do anything in real life with me?

I'll let someone else explain it

I think I've always been drawn to more nuanced or complex character types (Defenders & Controllers in CoH) which I suppose fits my real life persona -- more of a background worker to help make things happen than the point person. Someone who likes a lot of more subtle options and moves which enhance the entire group without calling a lot of attention to myself.
Also, I tend to be chatty with the quips and smart comments in game which is what you have to deal with from me in real life
Not really.
In real life I'm surrounded by books, dictionaries, lexicons and thesauri. I'm a loner and enjoy reading and learning.
In game I'm a bubbler and I smash Romans...so *laugh*.
I do get the question though. Yes, I try to help people out of game and ingame.
Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!
168760: A Death in the Gish. 3 missions, 1-14. Easy to solo.
Infinity Villains
Champion, Pinnacle, Virtue Heroes
This thread made me think a bit.
I suppose that there is a similarity to how I game here. I'm a lead supervisor in a manufacturing plant, a big one, and I handle the responsibility of multi-million dollars of equipment on a daily basis. I lead and delegate responsibility to alot of my employees, and I just about fix anything there when needed.
I normally play Brutes and Tankers. But I do have Blasters and Scrappers on my roster. In most cases I do take the lead in missions and Task Forces, blazing the trail. The only downside is that due to my work, I really don't like starting teams, I would rather hand that off to someone else, just point me in the direction and let me kick some virtual ***.
I think the natural choice for me would be controllers? But I don't like being "support" I like being the front line. No matter what I am doing.
Wanted to thank everyone for their thoughtful replies.
Dunno why I find this so fascinating, but I do.
Not surprised to see the full spectrum of playstyles/lifestyles described here already, but I think if you delved deep enough you'd find the majority of players falling into two camps: Those whose playstyles mimick their real-lives, and those who use the game to go in completely the opposite direction.
Kinda wish I was in academia and could get a grant to really drill down into the how's and why's people play this game the way they do.
Great stuff guys, thanks again.
To start with the simplicity- I love to defend people, in games and in life. I'm pretty good at enduring whatever happens in life, I'm extremely loyal to my friends and will do whatever is in my power to help em.
Slightly more complexly- I am a natural foil. Around the outgoing, I'm silent; around the indecisive, I decide; around the virtuous, I'm mischievous; around the nasty, I'm a paragon of righteousness; around the skilled, I'm useless...
You might say I'm a nonconformist, but I'm waaaay more nonconforming than nonconformists.
I see the complexity in the simple, and the simplicity in the complex-
-When I play my beloved blasters, I annihilate problem foes, tear apart enemies that go for our squishies, and take the alpha for those cowardly tanks. I use each simplistic power I have to its fullest, putting it just where it is needed.
-When I play my sweet Mind/Fire Dom, I play it calm and rhythmically, juggling single-target mezzes, sleeps, and DoT's with ease. And let me tell you, managing /Fire's DoT and AoE powers while trying to keep everything asleep too, should be really difficult.. but for me, it's relaxing.. I find my own rhythm in it.
I also play Tankers, because I fit really well into the taking-point pseudoleadership role, which nobody really wants. And cause I like to defend my friends.
I'm sure I could have described all that better, but maybe you get the gist of it.
I am a perfectionist in real life, and in-game it gives me great joy to achieve a "perfect" goal (i.e. getting to 1 Billion influence on a character, or perma-ing a power, or tooling a build out to the point where it cannot be improved further).
I don't see myself projecting my real-life persona on my playstyle or AT choice. IMO that's oversimplifying way too much. Though I am a solo player in the game and borderline antisocial in real life, so I guess that's translates.
My girlfriend says no. That I'm a teddy bear in real life and that's nothing like the berserk brutes and tanks that I usually play. As much as my masculine pride is on the line, here, I've got to agree. While I'm certainly a master at aggro generation when I want to be, I'm a lover not a fighter. When things get tense, I'm usually the one to defuse it with a well placed joke or insightful comment. I've never even been in a real fight.
Still, if you want to get more abstract about it, I'm a very direct sort of person. I don't appreciate fancy things, and I'd rather my stuff works well than looks good. It's why I like playing melee classes. No fiddling about with buffs and debuffs, just jump in and start hitting things until there's nothing left to hit, or said things reduce me to road pizza.
My story arcs: #2370- Noah Reborn, #18672- The Clockwork War, #31490- Easy Money
Sartre once said, "Hell is other people." What does that make an MMO?
I play very fast and aggresively in game, and am pretty social. In real life I'm super shy, relaxed, quiet, etc.
Oddly yes.
I regularly jump into the middle of groups of people in the halls at work and yell "AAauuurrrgggg!!" to get there attention.
That may be why I keep losing my job....food for thought...
Hmm. In life I'm scatterbrained, ADD-ridden, high-strung, manic-depressive, with a tendency to observe quietly and then speak. I have tons of acquaintances and just a few friends, but for those friends I'll do anything. I like helping people, preferably in a way that allows them to feel they did it themselves. I don't need or want fame or great wealth. I regret that I didn't join the military back when they were hard at recruiting me (and these days I might be a bit old), I have a soldier mentality.
I play mostly Scrappers, especially ones with soft control. I also play Controllers and Dominators, as my preferred style of attack is to render an enemy a non-threat then eliminate them. If this game had some FPS-style mechanics, i.e. headshots, I'd play an Archery Blaster exclusively.
...Basically, I have no idea how to answer this question, do I?
How I am in RL is less reflected by my playstyle than my interactions with others, although I suppose one could argue they are all the same.
Direct, with little patience for banality, insipidity, or incompetence.

If you haven't joined a global channel, you're not really looking for team.
well to those who have had to endure my tirade's I would have to say yes, I am scot/irish/scorpio/texas girl full of fire, I IRL am a 1st degree black belt and have competed in state regional and world tournaments and I would say I am as agressive and driven in game as out not a l337ist but I do like to push the bar, I have tried soloing the RSF/fail lol
I have duo'd the ITF and solo'd crystal keeper and binder of beasts
in PvP the professional competitor comes out I am a duelist not into FFA pvp I do to the above mentioned traits however sometimes get caught up in someones PvP rant
so yes pretty much me in game as out
I scrap solo.
I generally keep to myself, do my own thing, prefer not having any help to accomplish anything.
I'm pleasant to those I encounter until given a reason not to be. When that reason is given, I see no reason to hold back on the retaliation.
I have no fear regarding diving into situations where I have no concept of the outcome.
Apparently my in game lifestyle is no different than my real lifestyle. Well, except for the baby eating thing. I've yet to do that in real life.
Be well, people of CoH.

I play Tanks, because I consider it important to be helpful, reliable, and unafraid of hard work on others' behalf. I am not physically powerful or intimidating in real life, so it's a fun fantasy to take on those qualities in game and use them as I'd like to believe I would.

Why MA ratings should be changed from stars to "like" or "dislike"
A better algorithm for ordering MA arcs
Altoholic here...however i like to use a small amount of humor and manners on team...with a slight dark edge to it I also have a some great friends in-game and like to remind them of that from time to time...omg im emo-ing again ack!
If my playstyle is mirroring my lifestyle, then I'm severely schizophrenic.
*suddenly glances over Its shoulder* WHOSAIDTHAT?! . . .
Does your play-style match up with who you are in RL?
RL: flatulent schlub
CoX: levels up Dark Blast characters just to get Blackstar, jump into a group, activate the nuke and yell "Smell my justice/villainy!"
Yep.

But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

IRL I have a short temper and tend to fly off the handle. In game I mostly play scrappers and brutes, although I do have a 50 controller, MM and corrupter too.
In game i enjoy playing the most in your face damage dealing AT's mainly scrappers and blasters
In real life im very much a wallflower. Quiet, friendly, and kind until all of the sudden im your boss and you have no idea how it happened.
so... yeah... in real life id say im a Mind/Kin controller
50Soulsunder: DM/Regen Scrapper
50Limitshift: EM/WP Brute
Victoria Nox: Dark/Dark Dominator
And about 5 others that change constantly...
