So what do people think of the Rep Meter?
It seems frankly irrelevant to me. There are three states of Poster Worthiness that I recognize. Subscribed To, Neutral, and Ignored. I've never subscribed to anyone who wasn't a developer. And to me, if someone's worth the effort to send whiny anonymous complaints to in the hopes of making a little red box light up by their name, they're worth just adding to my ignore list.
The main place I could see something like this being valuable is in the Guides forum, and that function is already better covered by rating the actual threads.

They all laughed at me when I said I wanted to be a comedian.
But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

Posi has a negative rep. Come one guys, just because he's in charge doesn't mean he's all that bad.
Unless it was the other red names who gave him the negative rep.
He's now the third most reputable forum poster.
BTW, I went to the vBulletion site and found out some more stuff about Rep: A user has two values associated with them: Reputation and Rep Power. Reputation is the total amount of positive or negative Reputation you have. Rep Power is the amount of Rep you can give or take away from another user. Rep Power can be set by the board owners to be based on three variables: 1. How long a person has been registered. 2. How many posts they have. 3. How much personal Reputation (or lack thereof) they currently enjoy. What values have been set by our Mods, I do not know. But theoretically, a long time and prolific poster who has been given a lot of Reputation can give or take a big chunk of Reputation from another user. |
I also forgot to add that on that board too you are able to SEE who gives you positive or negative rep. On this board it is set to hidden but on that board it displays the user's comment, the user's name, and the points deducted or given. Frankly, I think that alleviates some of the griefing because you can't sniper neg.
On this board I've already gotten some negs with comments like "HAHAHHA" or "j."

Aiming for zero is totally different from aiming for negative infinity, punk!
I am so more magnitudinitively nonconformist. EDIT: Woah, it looks like you can delete posts on this forum! That's a first! Normally I just see empty boxes of ***DELTED*** or <Post Removed By X> stuff. But that was a full on bamfy disappearance! |

A bunch more positive rep for me, and two negative ones:
"aaaa" for my comment in the "Trainers and Contacts" thread that Steelclaw started
and
"think much of yourself?" for me telling Hero 1 that I wanna know more about I-16 story stuff if I'm gonna come out of retirement and make a trailer for it (power coloring is neat but not quite enough to really work with)
To the first individual, congratulations on mastering the first letter of the alphabet. There are 25 more - get to work. You might even one day work your way into the intricacies of capital letters, punctuation, and even grammar.
To the second individual, YES, I think much of myself. The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements - energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest.

I got two comments so far... I found them on day 1.
But I don't remember where it was.
"We were discussing last words, and all I could think of for myself were 'Who's the world going to revolve around now?'"
To the person who tried to foil my evil plot by giving me rep (and Nemesis knows who you are) Hah! 14 reputation! I'm still comfortably in the middle of the pack.

Here's some of the fun ones that I've gotten so far:
"DIE REP DIE" - This one made me LOL
"I disapprove" - Well, at least tell me WHAT you disapprove of!
From my "Armor and Color" thread:
"Silly post for attention and drama" - Silly, yes, for attention, yes... but how can a "silly post" be "for drama"? Methinks you don't understand what those words mean.
"hehe" - So they think the thread is funny but give negative rep? Or is the person laughing inside their head AT the fact that they are giving me negative rep. This one confuses me.
"keep on spamming, somday you'll get into heaven" - All Spammers Go To Heaven? Isn't that a movie somewhere? Oh yeah, so spammers = dogs. Got it. But wait, isn't spamming literally posting the same message over and over again? I'm pretty sure that my messages, while all over the place, at the very least contain some sort of VARIETY. So I'm trying to figure out how I'm a spammer. Oh well, at least I'm going to heaven... somehow...
This negative rep thing is too good. I almost WANT people to give me more negative rep just to read more comments like these, they are fascinating. People that give positive rep don't comment nearly as much because they don't have to.

Castle, on the other hand, appears to have disabled rep - a sensible precaution since it's a toss-up between his head and Positron's that the players bay for when something happens they don't like. Pos doesn't care coz we all con grey to him.

The whole rep thing is just rather silly. Those with very high or very low rep will generally be names we all know already, or just be at the top of/have been dogpiled by some little clique or another. Either way, the system fails to provide any useful information, leaving it mostly an irrelevant popularity contest. Personally, I turned mine off as soon as I remembered it was there.

Well it looks like the more you post the more Rep Power you get and points. It wasn't retroactive but I noticed by posting my rep started going up. Clearly this encourages spam.
clearly i am going to post more for the sole purpose of getting a bunch of green boxes under my name
i'm doing this because green is my favorite color
But for that to happen, everyone would have to go to UniqueDragon's post and give him positive rep. That would just skew the system. I don't recommend that kind of social engineering at all.

Now we can rep each other just like we used to have the Star system on the old board. (Back before they removed the ability to star people) -- I think it was Statesman that changed it cause he got a massive one star rating? Regardless, its back again. I had thought they stopped it cause of "Star me" threads.

I just 4 starred this thread.
The Rep meter might as well just be mud-slinging prompter.
It is a bad idea.

How do I see the rep rankings?
