I was undecided whether I'd really try CO but now I'm strangely intrigued... Do you work for their niche-marketing programme?

Actually the CoH/CoV split is possibly a better argument for a rethink than any NA/EU split.

Many players I know tend to be almost exclusively CoH or CoV - I've met enough players who never play redside and others who came to the game because of CoV and never play blueside.

If the beta is still looking for bugs then I'd have hoped that it gets a reasonable mix of people testing from both heroic and villainous viewpoints. Especially true given the actual side-switching element of going rogue.

Of course, the US servers may be very different and staying exclusively to heroes or villains may be virtually unheard of there.

It's not uncommon for players on the North American servers to play both sides to some degree. And besides that, it's a closed beta: they tell you what testing goals they have, you go out and test them. If you're just there to sight-see and play around with new stuff early, you probably shouldn't take part in the closed beta.

There's an awful lot of whining in this thread.

Just stay subscribed and you'll get into closed beta.

Is it wrong of me to be more excited about i16 and hoping to get into its beta instead of Going Rogue? Of course, that may have more to do with me only have one for-sure switcher (my Warshade) and whatever other hero AT I finally feel like trying with good content. But changing my powers' colors? Oh yeah, that opens up so many possibilities!

I actually don't mind the idea of a veteran beta tester system, but restricting it solely to players who were here on day one for CoH only rubs me the wrong way considering the expansion is for both sides of the game.

Considering that I16 closed is within the week and GR beta is who knows how far off, I don't think it's that strange.

You judge incomplete games that are still being developed? How shallow.

Considering how long PP has been playing it, and how close it is to release, it is safe to say that if she doesn't like it now, she isnt' going to.

I'm going to be away for the next 4 or so months but this offer has me keeping my subscription up so for me it's a good offer. Also, you see anyone with the new badge and you know they're a GR beta person.

Not necessarily, you get the badge for keeping and active account from August 15(did I remember that date right?) until November 15. You don't get the badge for doing the GR Beta.

Yeah, but according to the e-mail, if you keep your account active during that period you'll get into the GR closed beta, so it amounts to the same thing.

I have my account paid til next year, but will also have my 60 vet badge before the promotion is over. I wonder if that will net me the Tier 1 Closed Beta or Tier 2 Closed Beta?

An incomplete game? Shenanigans!

It is set to go to open beta in 16 days, and GM in 30. It is probably feature complete for launch at this point or pretty damn well near. Most of the remaining development will be fine tuning. That is to say, they will not be making major revisions or adding systems in that time frame.

As for whether or not it is any good, I couldn't tell you. I have not played it. But, saying it is cannot be judged because it is incomplete is a load of bunk.

So...... would it be safe to assume that the badges are awarded account wide and will be there whenever I log my characters in next?

Aside from that I'm covered for a while, did a year sub when I got my tax return earlier this year

Differential treatment why, exactly?
Note, it's different companies. At least, as far as who has your personal info is concerned.

Are EU players offered a 12 month value to begin with? (US player here, so no clue :P)

I do know, for example, when Piazo Publishing originally took over Dungeon and Dragon magazines there was a huge mess in Europe due to the various privacy laws and one or two other bits.

Ive also tried it.... was unimpressed by anything about it other than the character creator. Plus it runs slow as hell on my comp, and it isn't that bad of a machine.

Needless to say I'll be staying here when it releases and until this game goes under.... may that never happen

I have almost 36 months of time on City of Heroes, and I've paid up for 42. If I bought another 18 months, that's one six month prepaid time non-recurring subscription through paypal, and another 12 month prepaid time non-recurring subscription through paypal, I'd have 62 months paid time (thanks to the additional months free) and would qualify for wave 1 closed beta access.

That's how I read it anyway.
All I have to say is - when they did the "veteran" inivites for City of Villains beta, in the end the time requirement required "Past and Played" months - it did not count any months paid for by/owed to the player. You couldn't buy your way into the CoV beta like that.

im thinking people are reading a bit too much into it to call it desperate, it seems more clever to me, go try the game, but keep up your subscription for 3 months(a time that i have had quoted to me as the average time people play mmo's) but once a number of you run through the content, you will still have a sub here. Dont see the problem. before the additional time was offered i was here till may of 10 anyhow, so a nice bonus really, and as for gr beta, well i have had my city traveler for a month now, so not particularly concerned about that one, though given my restricted time, particularly during the end of the year, im hoping that i will have time to justify it.

Come now. CO isn't a great game, but I don't know that it's all that bad.

Ok, sure I'm not going to be rushing out to pick it up, but I can certainly see how it would greatly appeal to some folks out there, and with another half year or so of work on it I might be willing to pay for a subscription. I mean they've made a great amount of progress in the past few months so it's possible ya know.

You do realize they are the same people who made this game, right? Do you really think it will be that bad? You must hate CoX then.

Think it's the case that:
The company that makes CO is the same company that made CoX.
But the people who make CO are not the same people who made CoX.

Most of the people who made CoX are still here making CoX and have nothing to do with CO development.

For ideas/vision and fun factor, I'd take people over company name any day.

Actually the previous lead developer for CoX is the current lead developer for CO. That's a pretty important role.

Remember back when beta invites were for people who reported lots of bugs/would be helpful in closed beta as oppossed to beta invites being a door prize?

As I said, I think that most of the CoX devs are still CoX devs.

And lead developer is an important role, but it's still just one member of a team. Whilst not unanimous in any way shape or form, I still recall a lot of posters/players being glad when Posi took over - seeing it as better for the game.

I can't recall exactly when that was, but I'd guess somewhere around mid 2007. I'd say that most of the game we now know has been planned and developed by members of the current team.

And could I draw your attention to the woeful tales of Hellgate: London and Tabula Rasa. Both had some fairly stellar game design/dev talent and both ended up as... well.. somewhat less than stellar performances. Ok - premature release, changes of direction, publishers calling shots etc may have been major factors, but who says similar issues won't plague CO? Only time will tell.

Whatever the reason, one man may fill an important role but they can't guarantee success in a large team effort, especially with many external factors out of their control.
