How did you hear about CoH?

Back when I used to write for Boomtown.net the site editor was continually raving about this Superhero MMO that was currently only available in the US. I saw there was an EU version about to launch so applied for the beta. I think I was one of the first people onto the beta server as there were about 6 of us standing under Atlas! Also the day I created my Katana/SR scrapper (two sets I've never got on with since then as well) and decided Leadership looked like a handy power at level 6!

I've read about it in a magazine, back when it was launched. Unfortunately their's MMO section editor was... Well, old school UO fan, so basically everything that didn't include unrestricted PvP was getting rather lukewarm reviews. (IIRC he gave EQ 6 out of 10, purely because it had no "evil PvP roleplay" elements, to give you an idea. He changed his ways somewhat since then) I liked the idea that you can design your costume purely for the looks, not because of +something wearing it gives to you, but never actually tried the game, lag to anything in the US was atrocious here back then...

Then I happily forgot about it until the last aurtumn until I stumbled upon TVtropes page mentioning Nemesis... And somewhat surprised that CoX is still around decided to try it after all.

A mate at work pestered me to get it and told me it was the best game ever! I was getting divorced at the time and had nothing better to do so I subsequently bought it and have now been here for 30 months. Sadly the mate who got me into it no longer plays lol

Same here, person that first introduced me to COH no longer plays. Went over to WoW as he thought ED was just to drastic and this made him feel not powerfull enough and took it to be a major nerf.

I'd never heard of it, until one night i arrived at my weekly roleplay game to find the Good vs Evil box lurking on the table in front of me. The guy who's place we used to roleplay at told me he'd bought it for me (for a couple of quid from Wilko's) so i could join him online.. Thought i needed something to cheer me up... He'd been playing from EU Beta I believe.

Two years later, and 1 new computer, and i'm still playing, although my original mentor has disappeared. Hopefully if he ever returns he won't have to shout, "Heal! Heal! Heal damn you! Click the clicky! CLICKY!"

I read the review in PC Gamer, which looked awesome... but I swore never to pay to play a game I owned!

...then, a year or so later, an American pal o' mine came over for Christmas, and at his behest a trial was downloaded... and the rest is brightly-coloured, spandex-clad history.

lol Kallandra. Been there a few times.

I was introduced to it by a boyfriend who has long since quit playing. I quit back then too but was lured back one evening when I was bored and fancied playing around with the costume creator. Before I knew it CUSTARD had signed me up to Alpha-Omega and I am now legally obliged to play 16 hours a week or I have to give him my soul.

5 years ago, i got angry with one of our Guild Leaders in Dark age of Camelot. He 'accidentally' removed all funds from the guild house and left the game, which meant over time the guild house and hours spent getting it, doing it up and using it were for nothing. I left the game when i saw the house had gone but the same day noticed this american MMO called City of Heroes.

The rest, as they say, is history....

I've only been playing for six months. I bought the game purely because of word-of-mouth recs. I asked people to recommend me something that would work well as a co-op game I could play duo, having enjoyed Diablo II and Hellgate: London, and really mostly as something to play while waiting for Diablo III to come out. A good proportion of the recs were for CoX. Maybe there was a skew because of where I asked, as most of the recs came from women, and maybe CoX has more female players than other MMOs. (And interestingly, in view of the 'are the forums scary' thread, the recs generally mentioned how friendly CoX was for new players compared to other MMOs.)

I'm not a superheroes fan, and I wasn't an MMO player, either. I thought about a trial account, but then I found up a copy of the EU CoH release very cheap on Ebay, so for less than £4 I thought I might as well just buy it and have a look at it with a month's sub. Now I rec it very enthusiastically myself to anyone foolish enough to ask what I've been doing with my time lately :-)

One dismal december'05 weekend, when I was bored of EQ2, I decided to download a free trial of CoH. It was such a change of pace, I ordered the CoH 'Deluxe' box from amazon that week and CoV shortly after that.

A friend told me about it, showed me screenshots he'd taken, and after some pondering I decided to try it. I have taken a few brakes from the game, but I've been playing for two years now :3

And this was my first MMO too.

well i read about it somewhere and total forgot about it and was reminded about it when i was looking though games in game and came alone when CoV came out

I read about the game during the US launch, then forgot it. Several months later I decided to check up the game just to notice that there was a beta for EU servers going on. I jumped in, and played the last week on the beta servers before they went live. I was there beating the Winterlord and his snowy minions out of Paragon City.

I was hooked, bought the big box and got to start one day ahead of the rest. And I immediately gave the side-kick code to my girlfriend (now wife, and soon-to-be mother of my first child ) Fae.

We've been bashing villains and heroes ever since.

Broadband had just been newly set up, and a flyer from Game popped through the door to beta test Guild Wars before release. Tried that for a week and when it closed down, I thought there must be other beta testing games out there.
One search later turned up City of Heroes. Seemed right up my street, so applied and got into the beta which lasted a month.
I made so many friends in that month, I couldn't just leave.
Four years later - still on patrol, still loving the game.

This game has kept so many of my offline games from being played and one reason why I still do not have a Wii. (want one though) It would be a waste of money at the moment as I wouldn't play on it.

i was playing command and conquer general zero hour. a buddy there said about this game- i tried it- i liked it, left and came here. been here for almost 36 months now hehe

Mr ? introduced me to the game (friend/start of relationship (now my fiancé!))when we both moved into the same house. He introduced me to the custom creator and i was hooked! lol.

Best game I have played and am loving it, even more so now that I know how to create videos from in-game!

I really can't remember. I think it might have been somebody in the NWN realm I frequented mentioned it.

Anyway, however it happened, I found myself on the US pre-beta boards. Joined my first SG (yes, before the game even launched), joined in the speculation, arguements and the great Fanta Shokata craze, and was basically hooked before there was even a game to play.

However, it turned out that Smith was not a time-travelling Terminator

I read about the game during the US launch and din't quite get what it was all about, dort of forgot about it, started playing Anarchy Online and decided I wanted something fun.

I went to the store and my initian idea was to buy Star Wars Galaxies. Next to it was a box of City of Heroes and it all came back to me. I checked the box and it seemed like a fun game.

I didn't buy it. Instead I went to another store in the mall and bought an English magazine that had a trial account with it - talk about coincidence - and went home, played it for 14 days trying to get "fly".

I went back to the store... Looked at Star Wars Galaxies again, having talked it over with a friend that played that game and was rather annoyed about the changes and decided to take a chance.

While I've met a lot of new cool folks in this game, I still sort of regret it because it's - like other MMOs - pretty much like a drug you get hooked on. Now I've taken the opportunity to pick fights with the company behind it several times so frequent readers know the long rant I could write now so I'm gonna save (repeating) it for another thread.

A friend of mine played it, he likes to try out various amounts of games. I tried it on his pc, thought it was a cute game. Got a 'trial' account and decided to stay. That's 50 months ago

well i was looking around Ebay looking for hero games and i stumbled across city of heroes which looked appealing so i bought it and found it a really great game. didn't realise it was a MMORPG at the time.

I'd been playing MMOs for years at that point (UO and later SWG), and was aware of - and vaguely interested in - CoH since its launch. Then CoV came out, which made it even more appealing (not just the Villain version as such, but both sides being in the same game, for one subscription fee), so about two months after CoV was released, I finally caved in and got the game
