Fits, actually. Tankers are among the least created non-EAT; but seem to be stable throughout.
VEATs are more popular to create and play... but folks do seem to shift into EATs in general. Khelds are about 6% of hero character creation whereas VEATs are about 10% of villian character creation... but that's not the whole story. Khelds are ~3.8% of all toons created and VEATs are ~3.6 of all toons created. So, the shift "feels" less for heroes simply because there are *so* many heroes created... but in general, their rate of adoption isn't that much different from the VEAT adoption or overall rate of adoption.
Brutes, as opposed to Tankers, seem to be one of the more popular created villain ATs. They are followed not by the Scrapper analog (which is the heroic side's greatest slice), but by Corrs. The played Stalker information is even more telling... something's amiss or simply tied to a highly specific mindset.
The highest ratio of created Heroes to lowest non-EAT (Scrappers vs. Tanker) is about 1.6:1
The highest ration of created Villains to lowest non-EAT (Brutes vs. Stalkers) is about 2.2:1
The played thread has some interesting things to say about this trend to follow up on mindsets on character creation.
Great, the mindstorm's bigger, now.
Edit: oh, fun, just realized the lowest non-EAT hero is more popular than the highest non-EAT villain for character creation by just a bare smidgen.

Counting those that are actually played or have a chance of me returning to play them in the future:
6 Dominators (3 @ 50)
5 Scrappers (3 @ 50)
3 Brutes (2 @ 50, third might hit 50 today or tomorrow)
2 Controllers (both @ 50)
2 MM's (1 @ 50)
2 Khelds (one of each, both @ 50)
2 Blasters
2 Corruptors
1 Tank
1 Stalker
1 Defender
When I16 rolls around, there will be a new Claws Brute added to that, and perhaps a new flaming zombies MM (just like everyone else).
Hmm, most often created. Well, disregarding all of the lowbies who haven't and probably won't make it out of the teens the tally looks something like this:
<ul type="square">[*]Tanks - 3 level 50's, 1 at 37, 3 in the 18-30 range, total of 7[*]Defenders - 2 level 50's, 1 35 and 4 more in the 20's, total of 7[*]Scrappers - 2 level 50's, 1 at 49 (probably will hit 50 tonight) and I think another in the 20's somewhere, total of 4[*]Controllers - 2 level 50's, 2 in the early 40's and one in the 20's, total of 5[*]Blasters - 1 level 50 and one in the early 20's, total of 2[*]Keldians - 1 level 50 Peacebringer and one Warshade in the early 20's, total of 2[/list]
The created part is impossible for me to keep up with, over the last 5 years I've rolled and deleted or abandoned (on other servers) before level 10 so many characters I can't begin to remember all of them. If we're counting the ones who actually made it past 10 there's probably another half dozen defenders, at least that many controllers and a whole bunch of scrappers.
I've actually recently started playing semi-seriously redside; to date I haven't gotten anything past 18 but I expect that to change. I've played a bit over the years but never really gotten into it, now my SG has started a new expansion redside on Infinity and we've been playing there lately. Maybe by next year I'll have added some redside 50's to my list.

What I'm suddenly curious about is the correlations between ATs... It looks to me like some people tend to roll along fairly clear lines, like preferring range, melee, damage dealing, buffing/debuffing, or team-based ATs.

Aye; that's one of the interesting side bits. Like the person who does 'Trollers and Tanks... looking closer at that, I'll bet that person is rolling "ensure team survival" toons. The hidden personal schema each of us is going with could make an interesting study. Most folks try to be balanced... but how they do that and where they are out of balance is interesting; plus contrasting the outliners who identify with a specific AT/roll... interestin'
(also interesting is the different criteria each of us are picking as to what is an "active" or "reportable" toon in this self-report survey)
Edit: Oh, here's a CSV version of the file thus far; some folks who listed two VEATs but didn't list the flavor, I split the difference. Same with Khelds
I have the heavier numbers on other tabs, if folks want something other than the raw stuff to play with/error check.
Edit 2: file updated, thanks for the formula fix (can't believe I missed that absolute address).

My hidden agenda is pretty straightforward. I solo, so I pick solo friendly powerset combinations. I can make a solo friendly scrapper with just about any powerset combination, so I have a lot of those. Not so much with corruptors, so I only have a couple of those.
My tankers and defenders only exist due to powersets I wanted to try that weren't available to other archetypes at the time. Although I enjoy playing my four current tankers, I haven't created any new ones since the first year of the game. Thanks to powerset proliferation, I don't expect to create any new defenders or tankers.

I'm seeing that as well, but then you find a player like myself whose top 2 ATs are Brutes and Defenders.
Some of you have a rediculously huge number of 50's!
Not me - I'm not even going to mention the levels of my toons - I'd just be embarrassed! Suffice to say that all of my toons on Virtue get played - even if sporadically in some cases - so I'll count them all. But toons on other servers got made, played for a few weeks or months, then abandoned, so I won't count them.
In any case, "most" for me is the difference between one and two - I try to play all the AT's out of a sense of completeness. Here's what I have:
Scrappers - 2
Tanks - 1
Defenders - 1
Controllers - 2
Blasters - 1
Warshades - 1
Brutes - 2
Stalkers - 1
Corruptors - 3
Masterminds - 1
Arachnos Soldiers (dual-spec'd for Crab and Bane) - 1
Arachnos Widows (dual-sped'd for Widow and Fortunata) - 1
Oops - I almost forgot I actually have 3 Corruptors - so I guess thats the answer to the question, for me.
edit: out of curiosity, I went thru all my toons on other servers, and totalled them up as well. Here's my totals for ALL servers:
Scrappers - 2
Tanks - 3
Defenders - 3
Controllers - 3
Blasters - 1
Warshades - 1
Peacebringers - 1
Brutes - 2
Stalkers - 2
Corruptors - 3
Masterminds - 1
Arachnos Soldiers (dual-spec'd for Crab and Bane) - 1
Arachnos Widows (dual-sped'd for Widow and Fortunata) - 1
I still didn't include characters that were deleted.

Not even going to try to add them up w/o access to the game (I'm at work...and I have over 125 active alts), but I'm sure I have more Defenders than anything else. In roughly descending order, I also have a fair number of Scrappers and Stalkers, a good few Blasters, Tankers, VEATS, and 'Shades. Not so many Corruptors, Controllers, Dominators, Peacebringers, Brutes...and like one Mastermind (just don't like 'em...).
I think I have more D3s than many (if not most) entire ATs...

Interesting thread, particularly once Myrdinn started posting some number crunching results.
Of my roster on Virtue (ignoring Infinity and Justice as they're sporadically played):
5 Scrappers (50, 50, 32, 28, 11)
4 Defenders (50, 47, 31, 7)
2 Controllers (41, 31)
2 Tankers (50, 50)
1 Blaster (37)
1 Peacebringer (43)
1 Warshade (34)
5 Corruptors (50, 22, 19, 18, 10)
3 Brutes (38, 31, 22)
2 Dominators (50, 19)
1 Mastermind (41)
1 Stalker (39)
1 Soldier of Arachnos (30) [Bane spec]
1 Widow (38) [Night Widow spec]
I do have one Brute planned for I16 and one Blaster for Going Rogue. (Gee, I wonder which sets those could be. )

Edit: Oops, missed origins.

6 Science

...okay, that's kind of freaky that I have an equal spread of origin. The two future characters are going to be Natural and Mutant.

Six accounts.
I loves me some Liberty.
I'll crunch numbers later, but I have a gaudy number of Blasters and Defenders.
Lemme do the easy numbers, only counting guys at DO level or higher [this throws out the ATM characters and whatever else just never got played]:
Zero qualifying masterminds.
One spider. I like 'em but have too many projects.
Two "real" stalkers.
One dominator.
buncha brutes, buncha corruptors.
Zero khelds, zero controllers.
Two tanks.
Two scrappers at 50, one or two lower than that.
LOTS of blasters and defenders.
Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.
So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
21 tanks (first 50)
12 scrappers
10 blasters (third 50)
5 defenders
8 controllers (second 50)
1 peacebringer
2 warshades
4 masterminds (fourth 50)
3 Stalkers
3 Brutes
4 Corruptors
2 Dominators
2 AS

I like to create whole characters, so the power sets, character name, and origin story have to click for me or they get deleted. I don't like to duplicate power sets so I tend to have a mix of ATs with one exception: Masterminds. Masterminds are particularly fun for me to play as they are a challenge to play. They have complexities and nuances that other a single character doesn't have. That really appeals to my analytic mind.
But the breakdown which was kinda of surprising to me:
(Active Roster)
1 Warshade
1 Peacebringer
1 Dominator
2 Corrupters
2 Blasters
2 Tankers
3 Defenders
4 SoA (1 for each Branch)
5 Scrappers
6 Masterminds
I have many other characters spread here and there, but they were mostly proof of concept characters or "when Justice is down" character.
(QR)
I have:
4 Defenders (1st 50, TA/A)
3 Tankers
2 Controllers
2 Scrappers
2 Peacebringers (2nd 50)
1 Warshade
1 Blaster (6th 50, Eng/Eng)
2 Stalkers (4th 50 Elec/WP)
2 Dominators (3rd 50, Grav/Psi)
2 Soldiers (5th 50, Crab)
1 Brute
1 Mastermind

I fit that mold, and I find it rather easy to explain, at least from my perspective as someone who likes characters who can take on a lot solo. (I'm really looking forward to the new difficulty settings in I16 and hopeful there are no unannounced downsides.)
Despite the differences in the AT's playstyles, I lump Scrappers, Brutes and even (the lastest version of) Stalkers into on broad category of high-damage melee, and Defenders and Corrs into a category of high-survival, moderate ranged damage.
Both of those categories of characters can be built into different variations of what could be viewed as "tank mages". Sure, perhaps not in the truly classic sense, but with the right powerset and build choices, you can turn both into things that clearly exceed the game's old norms in terms of what it can take on and live. (Not a nerf herd - I love that about the game.)
Depending on how far up the IO scale you go, the two categories of character are efficient in different ways, and in my mind roughly represent flip sides of how to win a fight. Solo Brutes and Scrappers have pretty good survivability that's enough to keep them alive long enough for their high damage to win the day. Meanwhile, the right kinds of soloing Def or Corr can't defeat foes as fast in general, but can instead neuter their foes badly enough to win anyway.
For many players certain builds of Controllers would trump Defenders or Corrs in this category, but for me they don't because I prefer the Def/Corr playstyle to the Controller's control-centric and (sometimes) pet-centric play. Notably, my one Controller and my one Dominator are both Mind Control, one of the most "blasty" of the control sets, and one with no pets.

Twilit Destiny: 43 MA/DA

Shadowslip: 50 DDC

Counting up my current selection wouldn't be a very good view of my most created archetype given the number of characters I've deleted over the years to make room for new creations.
I started out mostly making tanks with a few scrappers and defenders mixed in. Then changes happened that killed my main tanks and scrapper, and I moved on to mostly defenders. I usually avoided controllers because their primary and secondary sets just don't often mesh well conceptually in my view.
More recently I've developed a more even spread of all 5 basic heroic archetypes. I even have a pretty high level Controller. But as far as villainous basic ATs go, I've only had any success playing Corruptors.

Let's see. I just did a full headcount.
Heroes:
Defenders - 14
Blasters - 12
Controllers -12
Tankers - 12
Scrappers - 12
Peacebringers - 2
Warshades - 1
Villains:
Stalkers - 11
Brutes - 9
Corrupters - 9
Dominators - 9
Masterminds - 8
I kind of thought I had more Defenders than anything else, but I'm not sure where those extra two Stalkers came from. If you'd asked me which villain AT I'd had the most of (without counting), I'd have said Corrupters.
Based upon lvl 50 and active (actually played in the past month):
7 tanks (* when electric is released) - favorite blue side AT.
2 controllers - loved my ill/storm, mind/rad was ok'ish until 50, cant seem to get into other controller sets.
1 blaster - fire/fire is a blast. I have 1 new lowbie blaster, they play significantly different from tanks (no duh).
1 WS (mentalmaden has no idea what she is missing)
1 defender (dark/dark) - only defender I enjoy
1 PB
1 scrapper
1 brute
1 corruptor
1 widow (love the widow!
1 crab
3 master minds (tied with widow for favorite redside AT)
NO STALKERS (hate the D&D AT).
I wont make any more scrappers/brutes, just tanks, thanks to power proliferation, wish I knew, I'd skip the regen scrapper and dark brute.
I dont reuse power sets (e.g. invul scrapper and invul tank. Only exception so far is my dark brute and dark tank, pre proliferation) if possible.
new redside will be almost exclusively masterminds. blue side will be tanks
50 Tanks: Invul/ss, Fire/ice/fire, Ice/em, Stone/fire
WP/Stone, dark/dark, shld/mace
50 Other: WS, SS/dark/sc brute, BS/Regen/WM scrpr, fire/fire/force blaster, rad/kin corr, mind/rad ctrl, ill/storm cntrl
