Ditto and Ditto.
I'll be logged on for the final moments - I wonder if server population at that moment will be unusually high? It'd be kinda funny if it's as laggy as the end of beta event was.
Come to think of it, there should be some crazy event to wipe out Paragon - a final invasion of Rikti, Nemesis, Rularuu, etc, that just keeps coming, and maybe bombs the hospitals at some point, so people can't respawn, until all player characters are dead. Might be kinda sad, but hey, it's gonna be sad no matter what... we might as well go down swinging! -
Alas, I can't get away from work for Gencon this year, so I won't be attending.
I'll miss you all! -

No further comment, since we were asked to try not to influence each others' voting -
This thrills me, mainly because of the possibilities it opens up.
When the Walk power was introduced, I figured that opened up the door to all kinds of possibilities for "travel" powers that we had long assumed/been told were impossible - like.... vehicles!
Yea yea, I know - dead horse - I've read Memphis Bill's arguments. But seriously, this, and Flying Carpet, have worked out at least ONE of the big problems (combat animations), and the others could also be addressed by making a vehicle travel power as another toggle that turns all your other powers off. The movement physics of the vehicles could be different than a character's normal movement physics; the problem of interiors and certain terrain can be dealt with by simply auto-detoggling the power (shouldn't be a big deal - that's how travel powers in most MMO's work); customization would certainly be desirable (this IS CoH, after all) but not necessary at initial implementation - if the feature turns out to be popular enough to warrant it, then they can devote the manpower to implementing customization, if not, they don't.
Anyway, I'm hopeful again that we'll eventually have motorcycles and whatnot to tool around the streets on. Maybe in 5 more years. -
Quote:I couldn't agree more. It always amazes me how many people usually clamor for lifetime subs, not realizing how they're essentially shooting themselves in the foot.Lifetime subs are a ticking financial bomb for developers and publishers - the people who buy them are the most dedicated players of a game - the people who'd be the most likely to pay subs for years.
Once the lifetime sub has paid for itself, the company is left with players who are entitled to all the perks of a sub, but who aren't actually required to pay a single cent anymore.
Just look at all the players here with 2004 and 2005 registration dates - NCSoft has been getting 6-7 years of subs from them instead of getting 2 years up front, and then having to support what would basically be free playing VIPs for the other 4-5 years. -
Quote:Agreed.I call it fortunate, not unfortunate. They make much more money by someone staying subbed than they would by any lifetime subscription price people are likely to pay. Offering lifetime subs for a mature game like this one would reek of trying to con people out of a bit more of their money just before it shuts down. You could probably accurately predict when the shutdown would come just by calculating how many months it would take for the amount of money made by a subscription to pass that of a "lifetime" subscriber.
I've never understood the desire, on the part of players, for a lifetime subscription. It's bad for the game you're playing, and therefore, possibly a very bad investment. Sure, in hindsight, I could have saved money if CoH had offered a lifetime sub up front, and I had taken advantage of it, instead of maintaining my sub for the last 7+ years. However, if they HAD, chances are good the game would have died by now - or several years ago, would have been forced into a micro-transaction business model, so that I'd be paying for stuff, even though I'd bought a lifetime sub.
Look at it this way - a bunch of people buy lifetime subs when the game launches. Two years go by. The majority of players left playing the game are lifetime subs. So, the publisher has very little regular income from the game anymore, and they've used up the giant influx of cash they got at the beginning (chances are, this was all spent to pay off development debts, anyway). How do they keep paying staff to work on continued development of the game? Either, 1) they don't, and new content slows to a trickle, or 2) they go free-to-play, to get new players, with a micro-transaction model that gets more money out of their lifetime subs.
Look at it another way - it provides a financial disincentive for the developer to continue quality development. They get a giant paycheck at launch, and less revenue coming in over time. If I'm the executives of that company, looking at the bottom line, it tells me, "drop development staff to a minimum after a game launches, and move staff over to "New Game X" - in other words, do more launches, but don't support the games as well after launch. Sound like another developer you've heard of? -
I drink Pop, also, even though I get made fun of for doing so by all my friends.
Also, everything I know about Canadian slang (not much), I learned from Bob and Doug Mackenzie. I still use tuque and hoser and eh in everyday vernacular, even though I live in Ohio. Close enough. -
Quote:Awesome, Hube! Great idea - I'll definately join. I won't be on much this weekend, as there is a local boardgaming convention that I'll be spending all my time at, but I'll hook up with you next week. Thanks! There is a channel for this on Virtue. You must be invited. If you join you cannot use the channel to plan the best time for hunting other players. Joining means that you are also willing to police the channel, reporting anyone in the channel that attacks other channel members during a planned event.
You can be invited by sending a message @jh2. Channel is just starting so not many members and it may take us a while to build up enough to be of any real use, after this initial invitations it will be up to member to invite others that they trust. -
Ah, thanks for the clarification. Well, in any case, since there ARE people in this thread who've mentioned an interest - drop me a PM if any of you want organize a time to work on this. And, in the meantime, perhaps I'll try to scrounge up some interest elsewhere, as well.
-
Quote:So, your suggestion is - post this in a more visible place, where more people will see it, but I'm better off NOT publicly posting it? Thanks for the constructive feedback, dude. This is really better posted on the server forums for whatever server you're planning this on. Also, publicly advertising the time means that you're going to get some PvPers in there to oppose you as well, even that early in the morning.
In any case, to address your points - since this thread has already attracted people who are interested in doing this, and several have said they are on Virtue server, I'm just following up on the thread topic. And, you're right, keeping it on the down-low is better - hence, why I'm not starting a brand new thread on Virtue forums, announcing it. If we get PvP'ers in there opposing us, we'll deal with it. If they outnumber us, and therefore we can't accomplish our goal, we postpone and arrange another time. No problem. -
Ok, no one has taken the initiative on trying to organize a team to do this yet - so I will!
Tonight (thursday night/friday morning), at 3am Eastern time, I'll try to put together a few people to do this. Keep in mind - it should only take 3 if we all have heavies and good builds/level-shifts. So, even if just ONE of you can join me - let's try to do it - I might be able to find one more from my SG or private globals.
Send me a tell ingame - @Silver Streak -
I'm opening a game store soon (ccgs, minis, boardgames, and rpg's) - well, soon meaning in around 3 months. I suspect things will be rather slow at first, so I'll probably play a little CoH in the store now and then.
But, since our business IS games, I won't feel guilty about it.We're debating trying to put in a full LAN area (the cost of 6 PC's is the prohibitive factor), with video projector, so people could play things like, mostly, console games in the store, projected up on the wall. If we do that, maybe showing CoH off a little would generate some interest, and some new subs, even.
If we're too busy for me to get any CoH time at work, I won't complain! -
Well, I've been working on these, villain-side, for a little while now. I seem to have bad luck with the spawning, because, so far, out of maybe 10 Hero spawns, Sister Psyche and Synapse have not spawned! Finally, just a little while ago, while I was solo'ing, Sister Psyche spawned. I managed to pull her away from BaBs and Positron - one other guy then teamed up with me, and we managed to get her down to about 1/4 health (with liberal use of large inspirations, of course). Then another player joined in, and she was down to a teeny tiny sliver of health, and then heroes captured a pillbox and she disappeared!!!
Agh!
I didn't think the AV's/Heroes were supposed to reset until the ZONE reset - but apparently I was wrong.
Anyway, I'd definately be up for planning a time to work on this (Virtue server), rather than just going into the zone solo, and hoping to pick up one or two people. I have found, by the way, that two people CAN take down one of the AV/Heroes - you just have to both grab Heavies, probably be level-shifted, and probably have a smattering of other helpful temp powers (like Envenomed Dagger). Three can definately do it, contrary to what I've been told by some people when recruiting - I had a team of three recently that were sailing thru the Heroes, no problem.
So, anyone up for trying a run on this at a low-pop time? Like, say, 3am some weeknight? -
Quote:Might I recommend this? It'll open up terrifying vistas of reality.Hmmm...I wonder if that one comes preinstalled with the "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn." app.

Quote:You're kidding, right? Did you not see the announcement for the 81 and 84 month Vet Rewards? If you don't think a free self-rez (that works like a DingRez), and remote access to the Auction House, are insanely good vet rewards.... you must be one of those people who are impossible to please.WOW! What an awesomely cool veteran reward for being a loyal player for 7 years! An account unlock of the hardest costume set to earn in-game! Fantastic veteran reward, thank you so much!
Umm, wait a sec...what?! It's for anyone who stays active for a couple of months?! Pfff, great, now every noob-a$$ed lowb is gonna have it. Nice. -
Team with Sam for a purple?
Sure.
But it'll take two for me to say I enjoyed it!
Three to actually enjoy it.
I'm cheap -
So, I finally broke the top 100 overall list, at CIT, although I'm not sure how stable thats going to be - I seem to hover right around there, rising and dropping as other people work their way up that chart.
Top 20 on Virtue, over at Badge-Hunter.com, is the same way - I've broken into, and fallen off, the top 20 more times than I can count now.
Anyway, sitting at 1155 now. Getting the ones I'm missing is getting more and more difficult - but that's why we do this, right? -
Heh - I didn't notice this thread until AFTER I posted in the 1100 club thread.
I guess by definition that makes me a member of this club, as well? Or do I need to fill out some paperwork?
-
I'm a little late to the party, cuz when i18 dropped, my first priority was collecting Hero Merits for a PvP recipe I wanted (and I don't PvP enough to get many of those). So, I only recently took my main hero redside.
Just hit 1100 this morning. Nice to see ya'll! -
Quote:Heh - well, since I've been playing a /SR scrapper since day 1, yes, I'm well familiar with that. When I hit Elude, DEF numbers are in the 90's. It's just that I misunderstood what "soft cap" meant. I thought that, even though Combat Attributes was showing me numbers higher than 45%, they were artificially capped at 45%, except with regard to things like DEF debuff.Just roll up a super reflexes scrapper and pop an enhanced elude, and you'll see numbers much higher than 45%.
I always knew that the Combat Attributes numbers don't go blue until you hit the hard cap. I do know a LITTLE about this game!
Anyway, thanks for clearing up how it REALLY is! -
Quote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd been led to believe there was another reason it was called a soft-cap - that it was the maximum amount achievable by a character's OWN buffs. Buffs applied from OTHER sources can exceed the soft-cap amount (there is a hard-cap amount which cannot be exceeded by anything, I am told). Is that correct? You are correct. This is why it is called a soft cap. Defense can be added after 45%, but it offers no practical benefit until other things start to interact with it (defense debuffs or tohit buffs). If it were a hard cap, any bonus above 45% would offer no benefit at all.
In any case, thanks for the answers! -
Hey Dechs, not sure you're checking in on your own thread anymore, but, if so, I have a couple questions about DEF which perhaps you'd be able to answer.
The first is pretty basic, and I'm reasonably confident I know the answer - but just to be certain - if your DEF exceeds the soft-cap, does that mean that any DEF debuffs are applied to the ACTUAL number, not the effective number? In other words, if I have DEF of 46.5%, effectively that's going to be 45%, of course, but when hit by a debuff, it comes off of the total of 46.5% - correct?
The second question is: what exactly are the effects of PvP on defense? When I go into Recluse's Victory, for example, my DEF numbers drop dramatically. Not being hip to all the particulars of PvP, I have no idea exactly what's going on there - is there a universal DEF reduction in PvP zones, is it due to some "which side is winning" buff/debuff thing, or something else entirely? Thanks in advance if you can answer this question! -
Quote:This was my first reaction, too. To be honest, I never felt that the in-game footage used in the past was particularly inspirational. Not that CoH doesn't look good, but that the person capturing the footage didn't have a particularly good eye. Same for the editing. I was very pleased to see much better looking footage this time around - moving perspectives, interesting camera angles, etc - as well as more engaging editing. Also, the actual video quality of the ViDocs are much higher than previous issues.
Perhaps this means the marketing department hired some new personnel to produce these things? If so, awesome! This is the kind of marketing the game needs to potentially draw in some new players! -
It's also used in the new Posi TF, isn't it?
