It's official: no lifetime subscriptions

Positron just gave a flat "no" to lifetime subscriptions on the Ustream chat.

He and Zwill then explained that when Paragon Studios / NCSoft had done market-research, what they found was that all other MMO's who had tried the "life-time subscription" method regretted the move.

It was also explicitly stated in the Ustream that the developers saw the game being around longer than 2 or 3 years.

It was always officially 'no'.

none really.

I know it's not a surprise to a large number of players, but that generally hasn't stopped players asking for it.

While I think there are some players (like myself) who would like to have a lifetime subscription option I've never really serious thought it would ever happen here.

Most MMOs only offer lifetime subs as a mean to re-coop their startup development costs. It makes very little sense for a well established MMO like this game to start allowing them, even in light of this F2P change coming with CoH:Freedom. Bottomline why would any game that's doing well financially choose to give up potential profits in the future?

Yes a lifetime subscription option would be convenient for players. But in the long run I actually don't mind potentially having to continue to pay for VIP status in this game because I don't mind supporting companies that provide services/entertainment that I want.

The announcement of Freedom was the death-knell to the scintilla of hope that Paragon would ever offer Lifetime subs.

Looking at how much we'll get for our sub going forward, I'm cool with that, however.

Won't we already get lifetime premium memberships once Freedom hits?

The only game I ever saw where a lifetime sub made sense was a game where the monthly sub price was $5 and the average active life of a paying member was about eight months, give or take.

The game in question was already making most of its revenue on store sales, even from subscribers, so they priced the lifetime sub at roughly the cost of a six-month subscription and got the money up-front while giving the lifetimers a reason to think of themselves as permanent members who might want to continue making store purchases instead of as non-members (when their subs expired/canceled) who might want to just bag it and go do something else.

I think that a similar situation will have to happen here as well before a lifetime sub becomes a viable option. That is, the market is generating the lion's share of the revenue and the lifetime sub acts more as a hook to keep the players in the fold than as a source of revenue in and of itself.

Since when has an official, definitive answer of "no" ever stopped players from asking for something they want?

For that matter, since when has a definitive answer of "no" ever stopped anyone from asking for anything?

Ahem! I'm from Mars (actually called Utargort in my native tongue), and the sky is pinkish, and water looks black as oil when we pull it from the deep wells we have to drill to find it.

I think that lifetime subscriptions were a good idea for Tabula Rasa since the game lasted less than 2 years.

While I respect their choice. I highly doubt that "all other MMOs who had tried it regretted the move." I mean..sure I suspect LotRO wishes a bunch of us hadn't bought them, but on the other hand, if we hadn't they wouldn't be here now. For games like CO and DCUO it's obvious they're only doing it to milk what's obviously a dying product, I don't believe that was the case with LotRO, nor have I ever regretted my decision.

If a 'certain other space game' does it, I doubt they'll regret it either...or at least those who take the option won't.

Still, this falls in the "not news" category, since sadly, I never expected NC to offer it, boy do I wish they did when I started...
