Back to Basics
I understand a few things here but whats wrong with the AH IO's and radio missions? Also you're gonna have a really horrible time once you hit Kings Row. How do you plan on getting contacts there exactly? Since I assume you won't be using and guides to check the badge unlocked contacts.
Power to you,. jsut seems that while you're ignoring a lot of frustrating parts you're also ignoring a lot of parts that made the game better.
Make sure you sell the salvage, and especially the recipes to the contacts.
The basic enhancement drop rates were reduced, so you will run out of inf unless you recoup some of the value of the invention stuff

You can still get sent to a contact in KR by a contact in AP or GC. If you do your starting contact that is. they never took out that path of contacts. They just added another way to acquire them.

There are no badge unlocked contacts in CoH, only in CoV.
Yes, many of the new improvements made the game better. It doesn't mean that a lot of fun can be had playing it like it used to be, since it was still fun back then.

More power to you OP Does kind of make me nostalgic for the old days, when I didn't have a tray full of teleporters. When people ran content missions instead of radios. When Perez was the place to test yourself against massive spawns. When street sweeping was a decent way to gain those last few bars before bed. When teams had no problem zone hopping from mission to mission
Good hunting!
Nice,
I have just gone through a bout of IO envy where I decided I had to have an IO'd out character. So I went to AE and farmed like crazy trying to get the necessary tickets for reward rolls and bugging the heck out of the scrapper boards on how best to slot etc.
I still dont have an IO'd out toon, but to be honest thats ok. I will have an IO'd out toon, but I decided that I like playing the game just fine as is with SOs or Generic IOs.
My new goal is similar, take a character with a great concept and bio through as much of the content as possible, paying attention to the stories in the story arcs, getting souveniers and badges (But im not gonna get obsessed about badges except the history badges) and especially doing the TFs.
Its a great game and I am going to try and experience all of it.

Yes, when superheroes (yeah, SUPERheroes!) didn't cry and whine and stomp their feet and throw tantrums when a contact had the temerity to send them to another zone ("ZOMG! We gotta take the train one zone over for this mish? WTH?").
I just don't get it. Someone actually told me the other day that the reason he now does AE exclusively is because he can do it all in one place, no "running all over hell and back"... c'mon, people! Other MMOs have you gallivanting all over the PLANET doing a quest. Make a SUPER(yeah, right)hero take the train one zone over (a 20 second train ride) to a mission and all of a sudden it's like junior spit out his binkie! Is the next big thing level 50 heroes with no travel powers??
(okay, okay, /rant off...)
... well, you can buy jetpacks in the shadow shard (or grandville).
My midlevel villains are like "Travel powers are for chumps!" They have a lot of time to work out their punchlines, taking the jetpack to the far end of Nerva...

So you think you're a hero, huh.

Ya know, a long time ago, I knew a natural heroic 40 (that was the limit then), who didn't have a travel power. But, that was an RPer.
But, to the gist, aye.

I think doing new TFs and revamped Faultline and for that matter the Hollows is fine.
The concept is to pare down parts of the game to the basics.
TO's DO's and SO's, No radio mishes and therefore no temporary travel powers that can get you out of harms way while you travel around until you take your travel power.
Just getting to the mishes was a scary thing sometimes,
Staying in the center of the street panning camera views to make sure you were still ok slaloming when necessary like in Perez, good times!

You know, I hadn't thought about that in a while, but that's really where you learn about aggro ranges and sight lines. Sprinting from mission to mission involved a lot of awareness about where you were, what level the enemies were, and what very thin path you could tread to get between and around them without getting shot. I seem to meet an increasing number of people who aggro extra spawns unnecessarily just by wandering too close.
The old ways of teaching are still some of the best ways
Yep.
Waaay back in the day when I was active in the Liberty Taxibots I rememebr as a lowbie even for hollows standards (6 IIRC, but could have been 8), running to a door in the deep South because the level 12/13 team couldn't get there without dying.
If they had actually followed me maybe they would have leanrt something, but as it was they just sat and waited for the recall there.
Of course being the diligent public servant that the taxibot was, I was in fact enabling this behaviour.
The River is your friend...

Should be more hardcore and not get any badges. Those were added after launch too and should probably penalize himself for any XP he gets from badges by accident. Oh and don't forget to work off all that patrol XP at some point. Should be uber hardcore and stop at level 40 as well, no PI or level 50 back in the day if you remember! No going to the Hollows or Croatoa and the aforementioned revamped Faultline or Cimerora either.
Delete folks off your global friends list too. You should stick to "old school" slotting as well, IE: 1 acc and 5 damage in your attacks, GO! This is excusable for any attacked tweaked to knockdown where you can slot a knockback enh to make it more annoying. Shoot, we also got an XP tweak and the curve was flattened out a bit so you're going to have to look up old XP tables and do some math to penalize yourself properly especially if you don't go hardcore enough to stop at 40.
Goes without saying that the tweaked Greenlines and such are off limits. I don't know how many hero side cape and respec missions you have to do to equal their old difficulty... ahh one shotting tanks with rikti swords in the cape mission, how I don't miss you. Oops that's another, one shot code, you have to kill yourself anytime it saves you. No PVP, not even arena! Be careful how you make your toon, lots of changes to the costume editor too, and none of those fancy propagated power sets or anything new! Hell, no CoV at all duh!

What is your problem? The OP states that he is having fun playing without the crutches and you go overboard? You missed the point of the thread entirely. Ever heard of "if you can't say anything nice..." I realize I am breaking that rule to call you on this, but don't be such a clod.
to the OP: I agree, I prided myself on being able to run the gulch in the Hollows at lvl 8. Playing without the teleporters, and all the temp powers is a fun challenge.

I find the post-release content that generally sticks to one part of the city to be an improvement, not because it avoids travel or ignores parts of the city, but because it makes actual use of a location for something other than a random entry for yet another sewer filled with people that remarkably like to stand around in a sewer.
I would be fine with a council arc in the 40s that placed a mission or two in striga because there's a possible explanation for that other than it being a random location for the mission entrance. Ever get a 30s arc that sends you to king's row? Why did it do that? Random. Now, that kind of travelling sucks. There's a lot of that in City of Heroes, and I don't blame people for tiring of it.
I play with 3 people who play like this on Justice. If you're on or want to come to Justice, you're welcome to join us. They play thru their arcs and only play within ourselves most of the time. Team size usually around 3-5. Send me a pm of interested.
Be sure to slot 1 acc 5 dam in all your attacks!
Lol, some of the posts were funny. I did say that not all of the past was great. I have conformed to the normal playmodel Ed-Complient, I do use all available train stations.
In my case I got caught in the ole you have to be lvl 50 to have fun. So 20+ 50s later, my most fun toon is an inf-strapped lvl 19 DO'd out scrapper whose slotting and power choices are questionable.
Very interesting. I'm doing something like that now; my quest is to try to do as much dev content (hero-side atm) as possible at the appropriate level. I.e. all missions from all contacts, or filling the relationship bar for repeatables before outleveling, plus the safeguards. The only exception I'm making is for TFs and trials.
BTW, there is truly astounding amount of stuff to do in the 20-24 band.

It won't be quite the same. Positron evened out level ranges so some of them are less tedious. I remember that the old mid 30s used to take longer than the entire 40-50 level run.
QR:
ALready ahead of you. I am in virtue and spoke with some of the people of my global. I went full old school. I rolled up an Ice Armor/ Super Strength tank(City of Tankers, and those two powersets existed at I0 and all that), and pacted him (For that good ol' lack of levelling curve feel) and skipped hollows, faultline, and croatoa. I have my toon at 24 right now.
I have him only use TO/DO/SOs, and no mids. I run out of contacts a level or two before the next set of contacts and had to hunt around Perez Park, Boomtown, Terra Volta, and Dark Astoria. Be sure to not be tempted to team with people unless they say 'Okay! Contact missions!' And no Taskforces. Try not to team with people that had powersets that are different, and if you die, just hospital no 'waiting for the level buff' that didn't happen!
I'm having fun with it, hope you are too! ;p

Just rolled a new toon, but that's nothing new for me cause I do it alot. What makes this one special is I decided on a "back to basics" approach.
What do I mean, by back to basics? I created the toon with the mindset that the game hasn't evolved into it's current state. I am playing the game with a early issue mindset.
The auction house doesn't exist in my gameworld, I sell DO/TO/SOs to contacts when my tray is full.
Base porters and all the fancy get you there fast options don't exist. I actually have to go thru other zones to a mission.
No Radio Scanners for me ,Contacts only, and then the dreaded street sweeps to knock out the ole outlevel/underlvl Contact missions.
AE doesn't exist in my world.
Mids doesn't give me my path to 50, I'm trialing and erroring.
Basically anything that reminds of how the glory days of CoX and I know that there were not all glorious (perma stuns/held, ED, etc) , but for me the ole game is what got me hooked into wearing tights. I honestly forgot how much fun the game could be.
Some of the ole Vet players might understand what made the game so much fun in the past and be able to relate to my lil ramblings, but I'm having a blast all over again and had to share.
