3: If DC were to get it in their heads to try to litigate away their competition, they most likely would not sue over trademarks. That's been done and failed. They would most likely take another route and sue over some truly ridiculous aspect of imaginary property law: specifically, software patents.

[/ QUOTE ]Which is a nic way of saying 'I'm okay with people breaking the rules that we all agreed to.' It's okay, you can say it. I on the other hand, actually like this game, and have principles, so between those two I find spending a few seconds to petition something worthwhile.

Obviously, mommy and daddy never explained to you the concept of COMMUNITY and how people should look out for each other. Copyright Infringement hurts the GAME and the COMMUNITY.
[/ QUOTE ]
Even in the analog community there are citizens who disagree with a given law, whether they consider it unjust or for some other reason, and who do not support it or act cooperatively to enforce it.
They too are often exposed to the specious argument that breaking such a law harms the community, in an attempt to guilt trip them into compliance.
The bald statement that violations harm the community does not prove it (insofar as such a statement can be proven).
But go ahead and condescend to those who do not share your point of view, as it is a proven means of winning them over to your position.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'll gladly go ahead exactly as I was. I wasn't addressing everyone. I was addressing one individual who was being insulting toward anyone who would ever petition another player. I have no problem with anyone who decides for themself to petition or not. I have a problem with someone who starts calling other people narcs and tattletales because they're acting in a manner that they feel is responsible and appropriate.
Of course, it seems you left off the quote that I was responding to, and which I had included in my post. I guess a little selective quoting is a proven means of winning people over to your position.

You seem to have forgotten people can copy/paste now Taking the word "ripoff" to a whole new level. I googled for half the first sentence in quotation and found the entire passage nearly verbatim.

LOL, I didn't even notice that it's a direct copy from the wiki!

Man, that makes it even more pathetic. Was a great costume, but yeah, I would have /petitioned without a second though.
EDIT: What are the odds that it's yet another Marvel employee scoping out the game...
[/ QUOTE ]See, that's my thought on some of these, too.
The circumstances make it less likely for this one, but I wouldn't be surprised if they regularly check to see how long obvious ripoffs last.
I use the "if *I* recognize it, it's obvious" rule myself. I only know the best-known comic book characters, so if I see it and know immediately who they're copying, it's WAY over the line.
Lately I've seen a lot of people say "The rules don't apply to me!" and then they have the rules applied to them.

I wanna see someone get genericed in front of me someday. It's already funny enough when a genericed character shows up and everyone makes fun of them.
[/ QUOTE ]
I actually have seen this. I was on a cavern of Trancendence trial years ago, and we had HULK. on our team (lol) Mid mission while we are beating up trolls we all see him go running into the next group...then poof! he turns from a gamma green giant into a rainbow colored generic costume and is now named Generic 00101293784...lol
He of course gets furious and /RAGEQUITS the TF, dooming us to a restart.
I actually think one of our group was the one who reported him, and we all had a good laugh about it, although no one fessed up to being the narc. Needless to say its one of the funnier things Ive ever seen in game.
I cant remember his exact tirade before his /RAGEQUIT, but it was also epic. I just wish I had screenshotted the event.
[/ QUOTE ]
I recall that to a certain extent. I was on a team that was getting ready to do Cavern of Transcendance and one of the potential teammates was a Hulk ripoff.
We tried to tell him that he was going to get his toon genericed, but he didn't understand what we were talking about or understand why it was a problem. I went ahead and petitioned it.
As we were about to start, he went AFK on us and was gone for a long time. Someone else want to join the team, so leader kicked him off and new member joined and we went on our way.
Sounds like he ended up on your team and got genericed from my report.

[/ QUOTE ]
Of course not. No one can copyright a name.
However, Marvel does hold (and a few others as well, I think) a trademark for the use of the name Thor in the comic book/super-powered hero world. Which is different. But I would leave it alone unless they were copying a known thor (/friend them to see how far they get though :P)

First off why would you even report someone who did nothing to you.
[/ QUOTE ]
Wrong is wrong. It doesn't matter whether I'm personally affected, someone is affected and wrong is wrong. In this case, NCSoft, Paragon Studios and every other player are the ones affected. Including you. That's 125,000+ players, an entire development studio and a huge publishing company, all heavily invested (in far more ways than just money) in seeing this game continue to grow and progress, and you think we should all just quietly walk away when some stupid little maggot blatantly violates copyright law, because you decided that losing everything Co* related isn't quite as bad as being a "tattletale"?
Get real.

I bet you get a big snarky smirk on your face every time you report some kid who made a Wolverine ripoff character, hoping they'll ragequit the game because you have some over-inflated ego and false sense of importance, as if your 15 dollars a month is somehow more valuable than theirs'. It isn't. I wouldn't "QQ" about a character I made a month after the game came out (before any lawsuits) being genericed and resulting in a much better, original character. I just can't stand pretentious forumites who report people for no reason other than because they want to feel good about themselves by making others miserable.

Well, i can tell you I don't get a buzz from reporting someone.
I always check vet badges first, if its a new player I send them a tell and explain the whole marvel lawsuit bit.
If it's a vet I just send the petition, they should know better.
But by all means, keep on thinking that we get together to gloat about how we crushed some 14 year old in Wisconsin's dream about being Wolverine. As for the $15 buck thing, I report to protect the game and keep it open. I for one would hate the game to be brought down due to the likes of you.
May i remind you that you don't have any right to use Marvels stuff without their permission? People knowingly creating copyright toons are in the wrong, not the people helping the game stay open. I do feel stink for the kids who don't know better, but as long as someone educates them on what they did wrong, i dont have a problem with it.

Marvel knows better than to sue NCSoft again. Did you by any chance read Astonishing X-Men as written by Joss Whedon? The one with the paramilitary group subdivision called SWORD that recruited superheroes to fight alien threats? Sound familiar at all?
Also, I think somebody petitioned my insect-themed villain The Bee-yotch resulting in her name getting genericked, so I'm bitter.
That is a sweet looking Vision though!
