Why I16 should allow us to remove granted buffs.

Don't get me wrong, Id really get a laugh out of the idea of making a male thermal corruptor called... I don't know, maybe Prescilla, or something, and changing the colors of his secondary set to pink and... well maybe a slightly different pink... and then throwing pink flamey mockery on some of the player base.

But I won't. There are a lot of reasons for this, but the bottom line is, it's going to be more destructive in the long run, and while it might be funny, I don't really feel I have the right to damage other people's hard one recreation time.

But with I16, it looks a lot like someone COULD do this.

Pink flames, black force fields, blinding white sonic armor? Irritating people, damaging their game experience or causing eye injuries (ok maybe that's a bit over the top)

Some people will make a carrear out of griefing those in zones with things like that.

Let us select and remove granted buffs in the buff bar, and the problem will be substantially solved. Putting a timer on re-granting a buff thats been removed will solve even more of it.

I'm wondering how much customization, we're really getting? I don't doubt this is a possibility, but it seems a bit premature to worry about. Also, I'm not sure that the generic "griefer" is really going to be that much of a problem. Because I can see "pink avenger" characters being completely true to a heartfelt concept.

All that said. I don't object to a way to cancel buffs, never have.

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

I don't know, it's always best to get on to the "to do" list early... stuff that comes up near the end of a project usually only gets done if it's REALLY critical

EDIT: and Slax shadow boxing in a bright Pink/Green/orange flame probably doesn't actually count as critical.

I can see what your saying.

Being on a team with bright white fire shields and also very bright ice shields would hurt my eyes after a while.

Should be easy to do, but then again I'm not a dev.

Or am I? I kid I kid

What's wrong with pink?

Don't team with the person who won't play past level 15, if that? Roleplayers have done it for years. You can, too.

Report them for griefing if they're harassing a CC, etc.? GMs are there. They are paid to be there. While they are there, that payment is for them to deal with problems. Those problems can include troublemakers. Let's make sure they earn their pay!

Challenge:
Make a pink bunny costume for your darkity, darker, darkin', dark, SHADOW! character. Now play a mission or two. Was it really a problem in the end?

I wouldn't be surprised if there's an option to disable other people's customization on your screen if it looks like it'd be a problem. I.E, don't want pink fire on you? Turn off other player customization and it turns normal.

Of course, pure speculation on my part.

Or simply have a prompt like with Recall Friend or Mystic Fortune so you can choose whether to be granted that buff or not. This option can of course be toggled in the Options menu.

Pretty much everyone would turn it off and leave it that way. You receive a ludicrous number of buffs from various things during normal play. It would also be difficult to differentiate between buffs and debuffs since there's currently no mechanism for it. You'd probably have to go hard code it in on every buff power.

It'd be more trouble than it's worth, is what I'm getting at.

It'd probably be easier to have an option to suppress all non-self buff graphics.

This. Why wait for issue 16? I'd love to have this option now. I don't really care what color it is, I prefer to see my character that I spend alot of time on looking just how I want, rather than a flaming ice cube with a forcefield. I hate when whe people buff me without asking.

A simple on/off option for non-self buffs would be great. Everyone else can see it, I just don't have to.

Because it's not really simple. The hard part is differentiating powers that are coming from yourself and powers coming from other sources and telling the graphics engine that. Then there becomes the problem of differentiating these unwanted buffs from debuffs that you probably want to know are on you.

why not be able to right click on the buff in the upper right hand corner and select "remove buff"? I absolutely support this. I can't think of a reason not to have this option.

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I had a strong idea the OP would be talking exactly about this. Some people will make their buffs to be as visually disruptive as possible just to shower them on people. I've always supported the idea of being able to drop a buff, but I think there's more reason than ever now for it being a feature.

I would rather they make a way for us to turn the graphics off and keep the buff.

I like the powers in Stone Armor but good lord do I hate the graphics.

While I don't object to buff canceling, there should be an option to not show others' customized colors, sort of like a "mute button" for that player's effects. If we have an option to not show ANY other players' colors, then we'll have the problem of turning off everyone's colors just because of one guy, and even though that's better than nothing, what a drag it would be.

We already have this problem but I understand that I16 may magnify it.

Removing buffs may be beyond the game engine however we may be able to convince the devs to add some setting that prevents us from being buffed by non-teammates. In teams, if you don't like them you can quit.

Oh, man. I was getting all excited about I16 colors letting me play powersets I've never been able to, thanks to over-bright graphics, and now I've seen the downside of customization.

I really hope the Devs give us something to mitigate the possibility of insanely bright colored buffs in I16. I imagine that the worst offenders are going to be single-target buffs (Thermal, Cold, etc.), which might be easier to give the same treatment as rezzes? Dunno how plausible even that'd be, though.

Pink flames, black force fields, blinding white sonic armor?

I'm kind of wondering if it's that's going to be possible. It might simply be that when you're buffed, it inherits whatever color scheme you're using at the time... or maybe even go as far as to let you pick which colors buffs applied to you appear as.

Which is something I'd like to see, personally.

This BAB's post some time ago about this:

Your power effect can be tinted, but not the effect when it hits another character. Throw a green fireball, the target will burn the standard red fire.

Beyond that, for all we know from Positron's pics--it's Pet colorization--not Power customization. My Guess: we can color our effects, but not the effects onto others.

As others have stated, it isn't neccesarily griefing. My namesake defender Neon Man is a port of an old Champions character of mine who used brightly-colored light-based attacks, and would disable opponents by blinding them. Hopefully they will tie power customization into costumes though, so I can use his proper powers which are as retina-searing and garish as possible when solo and teamed with friends, and have a toned-down version for PuGs.
