Oh, right... the channel that now plays nothing but Ghost Hunters all day long, the show that has a couple of daytime Roto-Rooter employees running around screaming while at the same time offering no solid proof of the existence of ghosts, even after being given several seasons on the air?
Yeah, actually, that might make a fun char. to RP -
Quote:Or, like i tend to do, do you get a "feel" for what you want, and start pulling from the shelves in your mind all the seasoning and ingredients until you have a creation?
I always thought my concept of Princess Frostworth was original, until after several months had passed and I started piecing together almost blatant similarities between her and other popular comic/fantasy characters. To be brief, she comes from royalty in a Dark Realm (Princess Kitana/Outworld from Mortal Kombat?) and ends up banished to live on Earth (Thor from Marvel Comics?). Anyway, the longer I live the more I realize that anything I think may be original has been done a thousand times before. My philosophy is I treat this game as a community, and as long as you can be original within those confines, that's all that really matters. You can't avoid being unoriginal when you take on a much broader approach. -
The set bonuses given from enhancement sets. Are these just randomly selected values, or is there a method to the madness?
I can reasonably accept bonuses like 2.5% recovery, but "1.26% Toxic and Psionic resistance" and "3.13 Fire and Cold resistance" and such values like that always makes my mind screech to a halt. Why not a 1.25% or a 1.33% (0.25 being 1/4 and 0.33 being 1/3 of a whole)?
Also, how is it decided which attributes get enhanced? AFAIK Brilliant Leadership is the only set that gives a bonus to both Toxic & Psionic resistances, everywhere else Toxic and Psionic are always enhanced separately.
So, I've combined 3 questions in this thread. Many thanks for the answers! Please let me know if any of these questions need clarification as to exactly what I'm asking. -
Just solved it. Had to claim it as an account item. I still need to get used to the new system... :P

Just purchased the Frost path aura via 3 Empyrean Merits. Went to the tailor and checked all over, including the Auras list, but could not find anything related to "Path Auras."
Have I encountered a bug, or am I missing something?
Several have told me it should be its own menu at the bottom of the list, but I've yet to see it, even after re-logging. -
Yep, enabling Tool Tips did it. Thanks!

When I go to the enhancements "Manage" window, I used to be able to view information about each enhancement by moving the cursor over them. Now it seems I can't do anything to bring up the info. Really sucks because I have missing set pieces and I can't be sure which pieces I already have without going through a whole respec. Is this a tech issue or am I missing something obvious?

HP HDX X18T-1200 CTO Premium Notebook PC
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8800 @ 2.66 GHz
Windows Vista 64-Bit
NVidia GeForce GT 130M
4.00 GB RAM
My laptop overheats and completely shuts off within a few minutes of playing CoH. I say it overheats because the keypad gets progressively hotter and the heat coming off the laptop can be felt 2 feet away on my face. Eventually just before it shuts off the entire laptop is scorching hot.
I've taken, as far as me and my friends are concerned, EVERY measure to make the game playable. We've reformatted the computer and reset everything to factory defaults, reinstalled CoH from the installation disc, run the program in Safe Mode, and even mailed the laptop to HP to check for hardware issues. HP says the hardware is working properly.
I'm currently using a dual fan 2500-rpm cooler, and the laptop is always in a 70 degree temperature controlled room.
Are we missing something? -
Quote:Pretty much. Tanks and scraps are almost eliminated entirely from the list of CM candidates due to innate protections, and the remaining AT's aren't all going to need CM all the time either. A good empath knows what to look for and CM's accordingly, and leaves much more time for...I'm also pretty certain the developers have made it clear that the anti-mez powers are short for balance reasons. Yes, you can keep everybody on the team anti-mezzed... but in doing so you take up time when you can be doing something else... like attacking, debuffing, other buffing, or controller.
Did I essentially repeat what you just said? Long story short...
Ditto. -
Quote:Serum is one of the only powers that I've taken in the past that's actually caused me to faceplant as a direct result of using it!Serum - mastermind: Okay. I don't have a mastermind with this powerset. Just looking at the numbers alone though, I'm forced to agree with many players on the forums. For what it does, when you get it, it just seems like there should be something more.
So, fighting an AV, slowly but effectively doing just enough to outdamage its regen, and then I think to myself "What the hell, I'll shoot up my Commando with this awesome sounding Serum!" Well, he basically performed the same, and after a minute or so he CRASHES! Thus allowing the AV to kill him with ease, leaving me to lose my edge in outdamaging its regen, while I'm left to scramble trying to resummon him while the other pets get picked off one by one because I'm too busy to buff/heal them.... and I faceplant. So yes, I blame Serum!
Anyway, haven't respec'ed out of Serum and haven't looked back, and by the sound of it it's still just as worthless. -
I've heard rumors out there of builds that have actually gone as far as to solo AV's and GM's.... without ever having equipped a single BotZ enhancement! I'm so confused! All this arguing about how OP it was, and yet somehow players still managed to walk the fine line between godly and casual without it... I know, I know, the difference between 48% ranged/AoE defense and 45% is just staggering in PG builds.

Quote:The AT's name may or may not have to be changed due to obvious copyright infringement. And essentially this would be a blaster, but better in every possible way. At the very least it would need to have a much lower base damage than a Blaster, much like the difference between a Scrapper and a Brute.TERMINATOR
Symbol: head-on view of a blast, gold background
Sound Effect: boom
Hit Points: Medium
Damage: High
Primary: Ranged
Secondary: Defense
Special Ability: Bloody, Bold and Resolute the Terminator deals more damage the more injured it is (what Blaster Defiance used to be)
Quote:PUPPETMASTER
Symbol: three spirals arranged in triangle, dark blue background
Sound Effect: Spooky, dissonant music
Hit Points: Low
Damage: Medium
Primary: Summon
Secondary: Control
Special Ability: Sleeper Agent long-cooldown power can turn one unnamed enemy minion, lieutenant, or boss into an additional henchman; always works on minions, chance of failure against lieutenants and bosses
Quote:BENEFACTOR
Symbol: open hand, light grey background
Sound Effect: droning voices
Hit Points: Medium
Damage: Medium
Primary: Support
Secondary: Buff
Special Ability: Karma when the Benefactor targets an ally with a buff, the Benefactor gains that buff as well (but buffing multiple allies with the same power does not stack, except in the case of healing)
Quote:VANGUARD
Symbol: banner, red background
Sound Effect: horns
Hit Points: High
Damage: High
Primary: Melee
Secondary: Buff
Special Ability: Bravado the Vanguard's attacks have a chance to cause a heal self effect; if above 85% hit points, the Vanguard will receive a temporary cumulative resistance buff instead.
Quote:TRICKSTER
Symbol: chaos star, purple background
Sound Effect: insane laughter
Hit Points: Low
Damage: High
Primary: Control
Secondary: Wild Card
Special Ability: Chaos the Trickster's attacks inflict one of any number of random secondary effects on targets, in addition to the attack's normal effects
Other than that, very imaginative and creatively thought out! -
Quote:Thugs/Pain is always a fun one. Essentially you can solo well with any Mastermind, but with Thugs you can throw out "Gang War" and have more pets out than any other set in the game.Is there a good Mastermind build based on any of the other pets?
I do prefer pet classes in general, always played them in every other MMO I've played, but I'm open to suggestions.
Hero side the popular pet set is Illusion Control from the Controller archetype. You don't have the pet commanding capabilities hero side like you have with Masterminds, but Illusionists are extremely effective in their own right. You get to summon 3 sets of pets (Phantom Army, Spectral Terror, Phantasm), and they cannot be killed. -
Judging from the responses, Dark Miasma as it stands would a much more difficult set to port over to Controllers than other possible ports (including Controllers and all other AT's). Thusly the devs prioritize by working on the easier sets to port over, because they can knock those out quickly. Essentially, because of all of the "control" overlap Dark Miasma would have (as a secondary), the devs would have to rework the set to replace around half of the powers, perhaps going as far as introducing powers that have yet to be included in the game, just so the set can be "balanced" with the other Controller secondaries.

I could see this working really well as an Epic AT. Perhaps some sort of a PPD prototype Power Armor that they've spent years perfecting. Offensive primary power set caters to your armor's various guns, lasers, and missiles, while the secondary power set implements your armor's defensive capabilities.
As for unlocking this AT? Simply play a hero to 50... AND a villain to 50! But alas, that suggestion is for another thread altogether. -
Or just raise the player limit of the zone and have Hamidon scale in difficulty to compensate.

AoE -to hit debuffs, paired with team defense buffs? Dark Control/Cold Doms and Dark/Bubblers could become a team favorite.

Quote:The vents are spotless. And yes, I'm using a laptop cooler, and there's no difference in performance whether it's turned on or off.Make sure you clean the vents out from time to time. I've found with my high-end laptop that it tends to run pretty hot, as well. I purchased a laptop cooling pad/stand for my laptop, and it's helped a lot.
Quote:Try it again with High Performance on, see if it makes a difference.
Quote:Typing /maxfps 30 in the chat line works as well. You might even want to limit the FPS a lot, say /maxfps 10, and then increase the cap until you find the sweet spot that doesn't overheat your machine.
According to Speed Fan, my laptop does not always shut off at a certain temperature. Sometimes the GPU is only 44 C when it happens., other times it can reach up to 60 C. The one thing that IS common each time it shuts off, is that I have logged in a character. Sometimes the shut off happens instantly, sometimes it takes a few minutes. But it always, ALWAYS happens once a character is logged in (no matter which character). And again, I've tried this in Safe Mode a million times, and it makes absolutely no difference.
I am beginning to think the problem is faulty hardware... either a bad battery, video card, vent fans, or I don't know. According to HP the hardware is working perfectly fine (this is after I sent it in for them to check up on it a couple weeks ago). I hope they're right. -
Quote:I monitored the GPU's temperature using Speed Fan before and after updating the NVidia driver, and it seems to rise quickly to 60 degrees Celsius (about 140 F) by the time I can log in a character. This happens pre- and post- driver update. I am currently using NVidia version 197.16 for Vista 64 bit notebooks.Games are power-hungry. They drive the processor and the graphics card to the ground, and cause a lot more overheating than any other programs out there.
Assuming that your vents are not being covered and all your fans are working correctly, another problem would be the drivers. Recent NVIDIA drivers have caused overheating, so make sure you have drivers that are not affected by this.
You'll want to install SpeedFan in order to monitor your temperatures more closely. Make sure the fans are running. Run COH in a window and keep an eye on the temperatures; if you don't hear the fans turn on when the temperature passes a certain threshold, something may be wrong with them.
You may be right about the fans not working properly. They are running, that much is certain, but they do not adjust at all to the added heat when running CoX. When using Speed Fan, however (using what limited knowledge I have), I cannot get them to display on the configuration menu, nor under any other tab, as if they are not being recognized. -

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8800 @ 2.66 GHz
Windows Vista 64-Bit
NVidia GeForce GT 130M
4.00 GB RAM
Hopefully that's enough spec info. As the title says, this laptop overheats while running CoX. Usually the process is I'll open the CoH Updater program, run the game, log in to a character, and run around in-game for about 1-5 minutes. This is when my laptop shuts off completely. It ceases all operations and the display goes black instantly. I've been told this is a safety feature with some laptops when they begin to overheat, so that there is no permanent hardware damage.
My question is why this only happens when running CoX, and if there are any solutions for this problem?
Other pertinent information to consider: I've already tried using a laptop cooler, 2,500 rpm dual fans, and they make not one bit of difference. I've tried using the fans in combination with cooler surfaces and environments, and again this has no effect on the problem. What's more interesting is I can run programs with much higher video, memory, and processing requirements than CoX and they run fine. CoX is the only program that overheats this laptop. And yes, I've tried running it in safe mode and it's still no use. I appreciate any help out there. -
Quote:It's a good idea, but as long as the various stats being enhanced are more evenly distributed amonst the 7 pieces. Others have made the suggestion to simply "add" a stat with the 7th recipe, which would potentially make that one recipe ridiculously over-demanded.I'm more inclined to go with that idea of having more than 6 recipes per set. You can pick which 6 you want instead of having to sacrifice one or more enhanced value just to complete the set.
Of course, the devs won't be able to take existing sets and shuffle stat bonuses around like that, so they would have to make new sets entirely for this purpose. It would take a lot of strain off of the demand for other sets, and of course add more breathing room in your choices of enhancements. And one of the BIGGEST drawback about having only 6 recipes per set, is that some sets have a special proc that only allows one per build, so you're screwed if you try to slot the entire set twice... *cough* Gaussian's *cough* Numina *cough* Miracle *cough* etc... -
Quote:Sounds like an intriguing TV show... what's the plot? Who writes the script? Director's name? What's the protagonist's name?9. Monday Night Football - Not so much now, but when I was single it was nice to take Monday night "off" from the singles scene, and just have a brew with a few buddies and watch a football game. It wasn't so much the game, it was the Monday night - something to do on what is usually a dreary night.
Sorry, just breakin' some balls here -
Quote:Or play through a Dr. Quarterfield TF start to finish, and you'll know no matter what you're late for something...Alt+Tab takes you back to your desktop screen
It also makes the game screen come back after time is known.
But the fun way is to have self-destruct on auto.
"I've blown up 3 times so far, oh crap I've been playing for 3 hours and I gotta start dinner!!!"
The clock is a simple enough idea. I just refer to the alarm clock in my peripheral vision for the time, but an in-game clock would make things slightly more convenient. Same rules apply to CoX as they do on the road... never take your eyes off! -
Actually I fell on my head the other day and came up with a very similar build. Maybe that's his secret???
