Heh, the failure of reading comp in this thread is epic.

And it's not on Angry's side. lol

[/ QUOTE ]

So is the ability to detect humor. So ya there is a lot of reading comprehension failure going around. Even Angry

It's ok, I know talking about Jack gets people riled up.

The minute someone posts a top 20 most influencial list that they are on for their respective profession is when their "hate" stops seeming trivial and petty, even childish.

That isn't going to happen though because the world is comprised of nobodies. Of which this forum is no exception.

I'm sure if we put up each person's career for throngs of people to disect we'd all have a heap of hindsight errors. Be thankful that doesn't happen because I seriously doubt most people could handle it. I know I couldn't.

[/ QUOTE ]

Humor is great. When it's funny.

LOL, I personally couldn't give a damn what folks think about my career on the internet.

I have a feeling Jack's emotions aren't that fragile either.

[/ QUOTE ]

Humor is entirely subjective. I'm laughing at most of the posts in this thread while I'm sure others aren't.

I say put your money where your mouth is. Post a link to all of your work. All of it. I bet we see some sensitivity come out pretty quickly.

Unless you are one of those people that could just jump up and sing the national anthem infront of a sold out stadium. But they are one in a million. If you were I doubt you'd be here lurking in an online community, but maybe.

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL, right cause posting my personal life on an online community shows some strong e-peen. I'll do it after you.

Also whoever said I worked in any sort of creative field in which I'd have work to post.

Assumptions also for the fail.

Again, i don't think Jack's emotions are all that fragile. See that there, that was me getting back to the point of the discussion.

You said it not me. If you think you won't care then do it. Otherwise stop talking out of your [censored]. Or were you not comparing yourself to Jack and his apparent ability to not get phased?

I really don't care what you do for a living, but we know only creative work can be shared through the internet.

I have no intention of posting all my work, I already admitted I doubt I could handle it getting thrashed to sh*t. But I'm not the one talking out of my butt.

"Again, i don't think Jack's emotions are all that fragile. See that there, that was me getting back to the point of the discussion. "

Yep the point of the discussion is Jack's emotions. You'd know, you were the OP. Carry on everyone.

Interestingly enough, that isn't Jack's first time on that particular list.

I am confused at why people dislike Emmert so much. I've been playing since CoH started and I never saw anything negative about him.

Some players need a bad guy. A "meta" bad guy who stands for everything they dislike about the game. it's basic primate behavior, dividing arbitrary people into "them" and "us" groups.

All the people who see Jack as "bad" have their reasons, but it's only rationalization for the way primate brains work. No big thing.

And irrelevant to whether you can still think he was incompetent, a bad communicatior, etc.

Yeah he was influential.

Irrelevant to why some folks may or may not like him.

Something tells me I'm not alone on the valuation of his comm skills.

[/ QUOTE ]

The fact that he has a reputation among many as being a prevaricator when to the best of my ability to determine even in retrospect none of his public posts nor his PMs to me were either lies or even deliberately misleading statements suggests that at best he should strongly limit public comments to non-controversial subject matter.

As to whether he deserves to be considered among the most influential people in the MMO industry, I'd say the fact that he helped launch a game that is still running (no question that Jack pulled CoH from potential development hell to at least a launchable, if sometimes questionable, state) and probably influencing at least two other titles currently in development (CO and DCUO), and then on top of that is involved with the development and launch of two new MMO titles including a major license one (STO), is probably more than resume enough for that consideration.

At his launch; CoH was also novative in the use of instanced content (I don't know of any game that followed that road to such an extent and put such an emphasis on them, but it is still more common now than before CoH launched).

Also, the travel powers were not as common as they are today. Similarly, the levelling curve was quicker on CoH than most games of its time. It may not be the case any more, but it might be due partly to CoH's example...
All in all, it was surprisingly less grindy than most MMORPG than came before and was among the first of the faster generation of MMORPG that were to follow.

The Sidekick system, the absence of loot or PVP were also elements that, while they never took old (not even here for the last two ones) were original and contributed to offer something 'new'.

So, I can see why people would think CoH has innovative and influential.

How much of them is Jake Emmert's doing, we will never know.
But, I have to say, I personally always quite like the man, never felt like he replaced my muffler with a live Ethiopian baby or anything...

Agreed. I never disagreed with that.

That ofcourse STILL has NOTHING to do with whether one considers him a great communicator or not. Or evil incarnate or not.

Actually he made me quit for quite a while, and it doesn't get more 'broke' than that.

But keep spouting nonsense, it suits you.

And I quit for a while because of choices Matt Miller and others made, what's that prove exactly?

Jack wasn't that bad, but he's the man many love to hate. I'm sure he's losing sleep over all the hate here.

<QR>

This thread is going places.

Why is Emmert on the list? He's representing Cryptic Studios which is a MMO studio with a number of high(ish) profile projects in the pipeline. ChampO this year, perhaps STO next year, plus Atari have just tapped them to do an unannounced Atari-based IP MMO. Plus the other titles they're worked on. For a while there Cryptic looked to be a major indie MMO studio; now it is a MMO studio with lots of potential.

He is Cryptic's 'face'. Of the small group who originally founded Cryptic, Michael Lewis is still the money man who outranks him, but (for entirely sensible reasons, given some reactions in this thread) generally doesn't court limelight. Other founders have since left or been forced out (Dakan being in that second category).

My understanding is that Emmert is an okay guy to socialise with but a complete pain to work for. As someone who plays games, I don't have to work with him, so I don't care. I tend to separate the art from the artist.

Also blah blah blah ED blah blah longer with ED than without it blah blah not even same studio any more blah blah can't we move on?

You mean "oh yeah no more nerfs" followed by ED was telling folks what they didn't wanted to hear?

[/ QUOTE ]

Wrong. He never said no more nerfs.

He said they were done with massive changes to the /powers/ (GDN being the massive changes to various defensive powers and aoe holds for the big items).

Then went and changed/nerfed the enhancement system.

They are separate systems. Like like a wife and husband are separate people of the same (hopefully) functional married couple

Smedley Killed SWG, this list may be most influential, but that's not a positive thing.

Finally remembered the example I was trying remember about being "great" but not necessarily good or evil.

As I recall, it's not in the movie.

But in the first Harry Potter book, the wandmaker says that Harry is undoubtably destined for great things due to the fact that his wand's twin's owner had done great things (IIRC, been awhile for the full text). Said person being voldamort. The wandmaker goes on to say that "great things" is simply "great things" - it can refer to great evil OR great good, but either way, great things. And time for bedtime.

That's a technicality and still a dick move, ED did effectively nerf a lot of powers, even if it levelled the playing field. From what I hear anyway, this was before my time.

This is what makes me shake my head about Emmert Hate™ (and I still vote that invoking said Emmert Hate™ is equivalent to Godwinning an argument...which amusingly enough has been done in this very thread). People wanted a face to rage on and Emmert happened to be an immediate&available target.

That said, despite everything else, I trust him far more than Miller (take that for what you will but it should be noted that while I have not tried, I probably can't throw either of them very far). You can understand the logic to the majority of changes in Emmert's time. In Miller's? According to his marketing boo-boo (epic post), my hundreds of STF runs state I <censor>farmed</censor> the game and am thus primed for punishment. You normally can't pay for that kind of offensive-as-hell, finger-wagging, "You naughty children!"-style of admonishment (except in Japan).
