Oh go censor someone else, you politically correct zealot. I liked Jack Emmert probably more than most people. He created a great and enduring game. And yes, when I say I'm not comparing him to Hitler or Stalin, it means I'm not comparing them.

[/ QUOTE ]

Touchy, touchy... Your reply makes it clear that your problem is not intent, it's simple ignorance of the English language. Your use of the word "censor" makes no sense. Nor does "zealot".

As for "compare", which is generally a pretty simple word to understand, I'll give you a little lesson. Golf has the letter 'g'. God also has the letter 'g'. I just made a comparison between "golf" and "god". I didn't say they were the same thing.

Likewise, you made a comparison between Emmert and Hitler/Stalin, noting that they share the attribute of "influential". Of course, picking those two examples out of the group of all possible influential persons is a strong indicator that you were trying to connote a deeper comparison. But you then weaseled out of that by saying you weren't making a comparison at all.

Seems better all around to just not make the comparison in the first place, but you did provide a few minutes of entertainment, poking fun of your grammar skills. So there's that.

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL, the utter foolisness I see is entertaining. But it's not coming from Angry Citizen.

What's funny is that in just one thread Jack has been simultaneously accused of using CO to implement his "original broken vision for CoH" and "all those things that he swore before were horrible"...

If he can do both of those, he truly is a genius!

[ QUOTE ]

And I'll restate my disagreement - a lot of influential people are influential because of their incompetence (ie, consistent making of many mistakes, or making a few very large mistakes). That they got the chance to make those mistakes based on prior competence is possibly, but not necessarily true, and what's more doesn't matter - just that their actual influence came from screwups rather than successes.

[/ QUOTE ]

Here you make broad generalizations about "alot of influential people" and then you state this...

[ QUOTE ]

overly broad generalizations are usually false.

[/ QUOTE ]

So...

[/ QUOTE ]

So... that is far less broad than your:

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
you don't have to be competent to be influential.

[/ QUOTE ]

Uh, yes you do.

[/ QUOTE ]

Which effectively means that you believe all influential people, ever and into the future, must be competent.

The only thing that is necessary to disprove that is to show that one influential person was not competent (or, arguably, that they were not influential because of their competency).

Further, competency is not a permanent state nor is it a state that is judged by anything but results, in the end. Someone could be competent to a point, and then fail from then on; they would be remembered for their incompetence.

In contrast, saying that "a lot" of influential people were incompetent or at least, had their influence on the world because of their failures, isn't overly broad. You can argue about how many people, exactly, constitutes "a lot" - but you'd have to at least prove that "no one" has ever had more influence via failure than success to support your original assertion.

Meanwhile from that MMO list, I could reaosnably argue that Koster, Godager, and Garriot (that I'm familiar with directly) have had at least as much influence on MMOs from where and how they failed, as where and how they succeeded.

lol, you think that requires competence?

For pure epic fail in HOW you go about something Smedley has Jack beat.

Jack Emmert was a generally good guy who had okay ideas and HORRIBLE communication skills.

With that said ED and GDN were necessary to get to where we are.

[ QUOTE ]
This is pretty much why I consider Statesman to be a traitor.
Not only has "Statesman" (Jack) turned his back on CoX, it was in an effort to make big bucks with Marvel Online (which no matter how good or bad it was would have been competition for CoX), then he goes on to massacre the great gaming system that was the great and infamous Champions the PRG by using the remains of Marvel Online for the mechanics (the Champions mechanics both for powers and combat would have held up in a computer environment as they are all mathematically based), then stamping on the Champions name on the travesty, and finally sticking in the (laughable) "signature characters" (we always considered them to be examples of how not to make characters - especially Foxbat!), but the studio he is part of begins bashing CoX in order to hype Champions Online.
I'm not impressed.
Is he the plague of plagues? No. He brought us CoX and that's a great thing. It's just selling out CoX, leaving it behind, and then trying to replace it.

Statesman's a traitor alright. Don't let that star-spangled costume fool you.

[/ QUOTE ]

First of all, why wouldn't Jack want to move on to another project? If he's got the desire and the goods to work on something new, why not, especially if he had a chance at Marvel money. Who wouldn't jump at that?

Secondly, "massacre the champions system"? They bought the IP, not the system. They never had the Hero system to work with ever, they only bought the rights to the setting.

It sounds like you neither understand business nor what champions online is.

Look, from what I understand about Jack Emmeret, he was an OK designer, and horrible beyond belief at communicating anything, especially to the players. From seeing his past posts, and current interviews, he has the PR skills of a rabid wombat and is better seen and not heard.

He's not a traitor, hes a business man, he has skills that he gets paid for. Designers and programmers are not limited to just having one product lest they be considered a "traitor".
How many other desigerns and programmers out there have experience with superhero MMO's? It only makes sense that a company would want someone with that experience at the helm.

LOL, ok.

Personally, I'd go with the poster above you, that his communication skills were/are/and will always be equated with a raving wombat. But that's just me.

Something tells me I'm not alone on the valuation of his comm skills.

[/ QUOTE ]

Censor is the act of silencing or removing content otherwise deemed inappropriate. A zealot is a person extremely motivated to see a cause through to its end. I fail to see how these words are inappropriate.

[ QUOTE ]
But you then weaseled out of that by saying you weren't making a comparison at all.

[/ QUOTE ]

Okay, if we're to get technical, I compared two aspects of three people, all of which they share or are purported to share: influence on their chosen profession, and amorality/"plague to end all plagues". For Jack, the profession happens to be game design. For Hitler and Stalin, it's politics. The point continues to stand. The only comparison here is the perception of amorality on extremely different scales, and the perception of influence.

The comparisons are on an unimaginably different scale, and therefore cannot be construed as a true comparison. They are also not full comparisons, which is the perception I wished to forestall. Unfortunately, due to the inane drivel expressed by you and others, I appear to have failed.

[ QUOTE ]

I disagree. The point continues to stand. And Jesus, if LivingHellfire is defending me, I know I'm right. I'll say this again: go censor some other poor shmuck. I assure you, I'd match my grammar against yours any day.

PS: I decided to have a looksie at dictionary.com. Here's what they have to say on 'censor'.

1. an official who examines books, plays, news reports, motion pictures, radio and television programs, letters, cablegrams, etc., for the purpose of suppressing parts deemed objectionable on moral, political, military, or other grounds.

2. any person who supervises the manners or morality of others.

Note #2. By judging my post as 'tacky' and 'whateverthehellelseyoucalledit', you supervised manners or morality--namely the content of my post. If it weren't for people such as yourself, such 'comparisons' could be made without a tiring debate, and taken in the spirit intended.

That depends on if the competency has to be at something positive or not. Ie, does someone who is a competent liar or cheat, count as competent?

If not, I submit Bernie Madoff. In the past he was involved in legitimate ventures, but his major influence on his field is certainly going to come from his failure.
