then left it and created another something supposedly doing all those things that he swore before were horrible for the very first thing he created. Only now they are all great and progressive ideas that this genre absolutely needs. Bravo!

    [/ QUOTE ]

What's funny is that in just one thread Jack has been simultaneously accused of using CO to implement his "original broken vision for CoH" and "all those things that he swore before were horrible"...

If he can do both of those, he truly is a genius!

How dare you compare God to Hitler!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen?
  3. [ QUOTE ]

Oh go censor someone else, you politically correct zealot. I liked Jack Emmert probably more than most people. He created a great and enduring game. And yes, when I say I'm not comparing him to Hitler or Stalin, it means I'm not comparing them.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Touchy, touchy... Your reply makes it clear that your problem is not intent, it's simple ignorance of the English language. Your use of the word "censor" makes no sense. Nor does "zealot".

As for "compare", which is generally a pretty simple word to understand, I'll give you a little lesson. Golf has the letter 'g'. God also has the letter 'g'. I just made a comparison between "golf" and "god". I didn't say they were the same thing.

Likewise, you made a comparison between Emmert and Hitler/Stalin, noting that they share the attribute of "influential". Of course, picking those two examples out of the group of all possible influential persons is a strong indicator that you were trying to connote a deeper comparison. But you then weaseled out of that by saying you weren't making a comparison at all.

Seems better all around to just not make the comparison in the first place, but you did provide a few minutes of entertainment, poking fun of your grammar skills. So there's that.

    Top 20

It would seem that not everyone agrees he is the plague to end all plagues.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hitler and Stalin were easily among the top 20 most influential men in history, but they were still the plague to end all plagues. Not that I'm comparing Jack to murderers of millions upon millions of innocent people, but the point still stands

    [/ QUOTE ]

Wow..........over a video game!.........Some of you people seriously need to get out more often and find yourselves a life. To compare a developer of a video game to those people..........wow.

    [/ QUOTE ]

And some of you need to drop the ellipses and go learn basic English comprehension, because frankly, you suck at it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The Shatneresque pauses notwithstanding, he's right. You compared the designer of a video game to two mass murderers and the immediately said "Not that I'm comparing them". You *did* compare them. You didn't say they were equivalent, but you did compare them.

    Tacky and tasteless.
  5. [ QUOTE ]
To a certain extent you had to be here (and by 'here' I mean actively involved in the game's forum community, at least the Dev threads) to really understand,

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think this is the most true statement I've read regarding Jack/Statesman. Jack created a great game, he ran a great game. He made necessary changes and rolled them out with explanations that ticked off a small percentage of an already small percentage (forum participants).

If that's failure, I'll buy a bucketful, thanks.

  7. Late to the party, but yesterday I signed back on to CoH after a break of over a year. Loaded up a lvl 32 Stone/Stone tanker (not the most fun to solo, but pretty hard to kill so great for re-learning the controls and whatnot).

Got 3 unsolicited invites in the hour that I played. (1-2pm EST Sunday, Freedom server)

I'm not saying there aren't times it's slow, but Freedom is a pretty darn busy server.

My Magic scrapper's an archeologist who found a suit of magic armor. He doesn't know John Dee from Jan and Dean.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Do you slot Insight of Grey? Or Fury of Joule? How do they fit with the idea of Magic Armor? How about the DOs like Torque, Visor, Crowley's Wand?

Most people that are really determined *can* find an RP explanation for just about anything. Those that don't care that much just ignore the issue.

Go ahead and Invent... Perhaps the armor has a magic compartment where the hero sticks in random salvage and out comes a shiny toy!
  10. [ QUOTE ]

No one. That doesn't mean tanks are, either. A tank should be able to tank for an 8-man team, taking the aggro, and the damage, from a full spawn while his teammates do whatever it is that squishies do during that time.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This is the crux of the matter right here.

There are only 5 different ATs, meaning that least three-slots of an 8-person team will have redundant ATs. Yet despite this, some people believe that a Tanker should be in the unique position where a *single* one can do their job (holding aggro and not dying) for a full team of 8, on Invincible, with *no help* from the other 7 members of the team.

    That seems irrational.

One controller cannot lock down a full team spawn on Invincible.
One defender cannot heal 7 people fast enough to recover all of the damage caused by a full team spawn on Invincible.
One scrapper or blaster couldn't take down a full team spawn on Invincible with no heals or other support.

Why should One single tank be able to hold aggro with no buffing for a full team spawn on Invincible?

The proper answer is: When you are making a huge change to the live servers, one you've had planned and had lots and lots of time to "internally test", give the Players time to hammer on it for a while on test, do datamining, get feedback, consider suggestions, poll your users via e-mail, really shake it out. Then, AFTER people have seen what it will really DO to the game, do an analysis of your results, and discuss whether or not this is something you REALLY need to do, and if any of the PREVIOUS nerfs are maybe overkill, looking at the numbrs and reactions you've gotten.

    [/ QUOTE ]

And four years later when your first patch goes live... well, at least you'll still be around to see your absolutely perfected, balanced, analyzed code that no-one can find fault with.

    [ QUOTE ]

In other words: Be honest and forthright, and don't just PRETEND you care what the players think, actually take your users' requirements into account when doing your software design.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Of course, when you're running and MMP game, the *only* reliable way to gauge your users' requirements short of doing a full playerbase survey, is to trust the instincts of your Lead Designer.

Doing stuff just because it's suggested by the hardcore fans/foes that bother to find the message board is definitely not a winner.

Complain all you want, but the Devs are only going to do what is best for the business of the game, and they could drive off every single person on these boards and just barely notice the hit.

Give them suggestions that improve their bottom line (and avoid unsupportable statements like "it's obvious people will like this because look at it's support on the forums!") and you'll be listened to *very* closely.
  12. [ QUOTE ]
Sorry but i have to do this.

Yeah its Lasagna but they took out the Meat and replaced it with Spinach and Kale.

    [/ QUOTE ]

So what you're saying is that now the game tastes better *and* is better for you?

I guess it really is a matter of perspective.
  13. [ QUOTE ]
Why in god's name would they implement something like that? A toggle dropping mob group in PvE that also has the ability to drain you of almost all your endurance (which would drop your toggles anyway).

    [/ QUOTE ]

They apparently thought that at the highest levels, players would be able to handle an intense challenge. (Though at level 40, what AT can't do a pre-emptive hold/disorient, or one-shot, I'm not sure...)

Of course, they should have learned long ago that there's a very vocal population that can't stand the thought of not plowing through every group.

Oh well... at least we can accept that the probability of any religion being even remotely correct is near nil. So science is still the only worthwhile paradigm to live by.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Interesting you say this since Newton, Einstein, Darwin, Heisenberg, and Hawking all had/have personal spiritual beliefs or make clear allowances for a creator.

*opens a big ole can of worms, officially derailing the thread*

    [/ QUOTE ]

And of those, Newton was the only one who "lived by a paradigm" other than science. Einstein and Darwin were both quite vocal about the unlikelyhood of a "God" in the sense of any modern practiced relgion.

Deism (the closest description for what was practiced by those two) is much more of a philosophy than a religion. Einstein in particular wrote at length about the dangers of religion. I recommend _Out of My Later Years_ for some good discussion of his thoughts outside of science.

Newton was a brilliant ponce. A political player of the worst kind. And Heisenberg was a Nazi (though he may have been trying to subvert their system from within, it's not clear). _Heisenberg's War_ is a good overview of that situation. I believe all Nazi's had to practice the state religion.

Hawking is a practicing Catholic, but has stated more than once that his Christian view of God never enters his work. He lives by the paradigm of science 6 days a week and worships on Sunday.

er... wait... what board is this again? *watches the worms scurry about*
  16. [ QUOTE ]

What I suspect is that the devs aren't willing to invest the kind of time needed to create a mini-game for each skill to be used and want a more simple solution which just isn't going to happen.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Another possibility is that the system is on hiatus precisely because he intends to create a engaging, interactive system just as you describe and there simply isn't the time or budget to fit that in currently.
