VIrtue Server Protest
How would the GM demand that he delete the character? Something sounds fishy there.
Remember when Jack didn't care what players did/thought?
We went from anarchy to totalitarianism.
w00t! Viva la revolucion!
Well, maybe I can get the player to post the emails back and forth between the GMs & her. Proly just be an excuse to ban both of us and dlete this post however
The generic-ing is bad enough. 76% of the toons out there havea passing resemblance to SOMEBODY in comics. I respect coptright protection, but there are griefers on Virtue in particular that use this tactic to harrass people that they dont like, are jealus of a better tribute toon or just want to steal the idea themselves.
Ah, roleplayer drama.
...why the heck would a GM be threatening to ban a character? That sounds incredibly fishy.
Stardrive, I'll be generous and say you and your friend are greatly misunderstanding what happened.
GMs have no need to demand a character be deleted. What's the point? Once it's been genericed there is no more violation occuring. They don't "need an excuse" to ban someone, they can do that on their own already.
Please try to find out what's going on before running screaming to the forums about how horrible some customer service issue is.
Or failing that, please think up a more believable story next time. This one has too many plotholes to be entertaining.

The whole thing sounds fishy. If this character were such an obvious problem, why is it that it was fine and dandy to be around through all five anniversary badges (Which I saw that the character has)? Yeah, I get that somebody has to report it and some slip through the cracks, but slip through for FIVE YEARS? This sort of thing has gotten bad everywhere of late, all it takes is a report and since nobody wants to spend the time to investigate, they just err on the side of caution.
I can say that i had a run in with the Gms over a name change after a year and a half of playing on victory. Without warning they deleted my costumes and my bio and i had sent them tons of petitions before with the toon in question. So i can feel the pain but i went at least ten rounds back and forth and they kept a level head the whole time and they never said anything about deleting a character for a name change. The want to resolve the problem as fast as they can with as little damage to the players playing as possible. Something dosent add up when u say they want this person to delete their toon just because hey got verbal over not wanting to change name. Either way best of luck

Exactly my point. I used to empathize with the devs too. I remember ish 2 on Victory server when the whole of underneath Atlas's statue used to be nothing but Galaxy Rangers standing around. I remember blatant Marvel & DC ripoffs too. THAT is copyright infringement. ANYTHING in passing now though is getting old, esp when there are known griefers on some of the servers.
If I didn't know better, I'd say this is a cry for attention designed to take advantage of the post-AE farming hysteria.
I looked around a bit in the user agreement and I found about character names not appearances. Can anyone point it to me? Also the GM could just change the name themselves or let her pay for the name change.
if the name is an issue, they generic it, then send you an email asking for three names you want them to try - you don't have to pay for it then.

The warning is in the EULA.

Now that is rather sloppy of them.

(emphasis mine)
Keeping a level head is not just for devs but for players too.
This has been covered on the forums before: if you get generic'ed, you can:
1) man up and admit you copied and move on with your life
2) petition the change and explain yourself (again, with a level head and patience). I've heard at least one player here say he got his toon's costume and bio back. Even if you don't and you know for a fact you were not in the wrong, big deal, it's just a game and just one toon. If it does bother you that much, then just stop paying/playing.
3) scream bloody murder (protip: not a viable option)
This is precisely why Congress enacted a DMCA safe harbor and takedown-putback process. The safe harbor protects Internet service providers (such as NCSoft), and the takedown-putback process protects Internet service users (such as City of Heroes players) from bogus copyright claims.
And really, what could be more bogus than copyright claims spammed by third parties (i.e. griefers) until the petition lottery serves up a quick-to-generic GM? No due process involved at any point, either; nobody who knows a damn thing about copyright law ever puts a finger on a button.
This will not be the last time NCSoft's decision not to use the DMCA safe harbor will bite either them or us in the you-know-what.
If you have a problem with a CS decision, ask for the issue to be elevated. Bringing it here and ragging on CS here on the forums is not only against forum policy, but won't get anything done except a lock or delete on your thread.
If you want to get more personal response, PM Avatea or Niviene here on the forums. Their names are listed at the bottom of every folder and post.

The highlighted covers everything. Name, SG name, Bio, Costume, Battlecry and anything else a third party might have created.

This was the scene at City Hall a half hour ago, a protest by a a few dozen of some of the games longest running players.
Why?
Nexus Ar'gos, a 5 yer old character with a 5 year old costume, was generic'ed by the GMs. SO griefer reported that the character was a Captain Mar'vell ripoff and that's all it took
I know the player, and the toon. The costume was somewhat similar, only somewhat. I personally might give this one a pass too if that's all that happened. HOWEVER
AFTER that happened, now the GMs are demanding that the toon be deleted outright OR the player's 5 tear running account will be banned. This is, to be blunt, crap. We as customers deserve a better review porcess in cases like that AND we should certainly never be subject to the follow up bullying and harrassment being dealt out here.

1) GM's wouldn't tell the player to delete the character. Once the costume is randomized, the name is changed, and the bio blanked, there is no more violation.
2) IF this were an erroneous generic'ing (either through GM mistake or griefer-instigated) a petition to review the GM's action is not only acceptable, but encouraged.
3) Thou shalt not discuss specific GM activity on an account with anyone else. So sayeth the EULA.

This thread looks more like a failed troll than anything else.
I knew a person who had a 3+ year character genericized and he was able to escalate the issue to a manager and eventually get his name restored. Most of the admins will lean on the side of being overly cautious.

The character is almost an exact clone of Captain Mar'vell, even the bio. The kicker? at the bottom of the page it reads "Character influenced by Captain Mar-vell from Marvel Comics "
The Sly Bold Renardine - " I am Scraptastic!"
Chat logs or it didn't happen.

There's no resemblance there!
Maybe I need more caffeine, but after reading the Captain Marvel entry on wikipedia -- yes, the Marvel Comics Captain Marvel and not the DC version, nor the Fawcett Comics version -- I'm still back on "what the heck's wrong with the name "Nexus Ar'gos?""
Seems as though the character needed a non-homage "look" and maybe a "bio retcon" -- can someone perhaps explain how the NAME became an issue?!
