VIrtue Server Protest

This was the scene at City Hall a half hour ago, a protest by a a few dozen of some of the games longest running players.

Why?

Nexus Ar'gos, a 5 yer old character with a 5 year old costume, was generic'ed by the GMs. SO griefer reported that the character was a Captain Mar'vell ripoff and that's all it took

I know the player, and the toon. The costume was somewhat similar, only somewhat. I personally might give this one a pass too if that's all that happened. HOWEVER

AFTER that happened, now the GMs are demanding that the toon be deleted outright OR the player's 5 tear running account will be banned. This is, to be blunt, crap. We as customers deserve a better review porcess in cases like that AND we should certainly never be subject to the follow up bullying and harrassment being dealt out here.

I'm giving this thread 5 stars because of how ridiculous it's cause is.

im 100 % serious,
and even though its not in my habits, i gave in a dude ingame 2 weeks ago, with a name like " Babtists destroyer"

(i made this up not to speak out the real name of teh dude, but its kinda Eulawise similar)

I Saw Him Yesterday... ingame.

With the same name.

so gimme a break with rules, if they only apply to some.

[/ QUOTE ]

The rules apply to all, but unless they have a truly remarkable AI specifically set to search out rule breakers, and all the possible aural permutations of possible actionable names, including colloquialisms such as leet-speak; they will never be able to 'find' these rule breakers. Yes; we are the police if we chose to be. If not; then let it slide, but realize when YOU let it slide, you have no right to kvetch here on the Boards about it.

What I'm saying is that somehow either the GM's directly notice a candidate for genericing or they are apprised of same. Either way, it is a time consuming job, and only one part of a multifaceted job keeping the game CS running smoothly from the inside. And seeing the number of uncreative dorks in the game (ie: Wulfereen, Capt Marbell, etc.); is it any wonder that Bugs and Glitches, and other petitions get backlogged? I'm not surprised at all, and tend to give the benefit of the doubt to the GMs. Yeah, I'm a fanboi; an adult who realizes that dealing with the public USUALLY isnt worth ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY, and I appreciate those who chose to 'do the heavy lifting for me' for monetary remuneration.

[/ QUOTE ]
maybe you outrank alts and beaviours in a peculiar manner, my issue here is about pro religious content, wich is, in my opinion, more crappy/derelicted and abusive than superman's cape.

PS: man, im french, i barely got your point 'cause you speak accurate, and sorry for the mistakes in my english.

I am not going to respond to the specifics of this case, but I will say this to the Genericized player. You MUST escalate this, and send a PM to the community reps on the board. I have my suspicions that more is going on here than just a Genericized character.

Today (Monday, May 25) is a holiday, while they would have some GM's working, these actions sound more like account hacks than what a GM would do.

No, the ridiculous part is the sheer number of PM/E-mail flames my friend is getting in response to this. I've know this person for as long as I have played this game and have met her in person on more than one occasion. She deserves far better treatment than she has received thus far.

The character was deleted after she logged off, infringement or not, deletion of the character is wrong on any level.

Though I don't have any posts in these forums I do have my welcome PM from December of 2004 and have played this game since Beta, I tend to stay out of corporate forums and the quality of responses in this thread go further to reinforce my reasoning for staying out of them.

I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to protest.

Are you sure? they even put in a cute little emote that allows a player to do such in game. So... we aren't supposed to fight an injustice in a game with a premise that is all about.... fighting injustice ... huh...

On the contrary, I have a very open mind... and that is the problem... instead of a rational discussion all that I have seen for the most part is flames and trashing of a really good person.

Evolution in action.

The forum population adapts to the environment. What you wind up with are

1. People whose positions are nearly identical to the operators even when those positions do a 180. The DoublePlusGood crowd.

2. People with very thick skins.

3. The transients, those that will evaporate with a little bit of time.

This forum has a double dose of pressure on it. As the people that disagree wit developer actions tend to dissappear because they stop playing the game.

[/ QUOTE ] I've seen the flaming too. And I've seen claims made by the OP with absolutely zero evidence shown. And since these claims are unusual(a GM telling somebody they have to delete a character over a costume violation), evidence should be provided.

Because without evidence the claim lacks credibility. It really comes across as someone misunderstanding what they were told or somebody flat out lying.

Also the fact that the character has been around for five years is irrelevant.

Look - this thread is likely going to be deleted tomorrow. The way you resolve issues like this - whether you disagree with the genericing or feel it was justified and just object to the deletion of the character - is to go over the GM's head through customer service.

I realize it may sound a bit hypocritical of me to say that after posting (frequently) about how the script that they were using to target PLers was deleting people's characters that did nothing wrong but were in level pacts, but in those cases it an example of a new policy (and punishment) not working and I feel that the devs need to fix the issue and prevent it from happening again instead of passing the buck off to customer service to fix it every time it happens.

As for the GM, once again if everything happened as described I feel they should be fired - or at the very least given a nice long time off without pay. When I was working technical support I would expect the same to happen to myself or any of my coworkers who decided to just randomly delete things in other people's accounts because they could (and yes, some people were let go for doing exactly that). They dealt with the issue by genericing the character, anything beyond that was out of line. I have no way of knowing the exact details, so I've been sure to say "if" a lot in my posts. The only ones who know are the ones involved directly or someone who can check the logs, and that's why the GM's superior needs to know about it to investigate if the claims are true.

But even I know that a player cannot delete a character they made when that player is off-line!

[/ QUOTE ]

This shows how little you know about the game mechanics. The character selection screen isn't online. When you delete a character you are removing it from your computers files, not NCSofts database.

That is why CS can restore a character you deleted if you can give them the date it was deleted. Because their database which is online still has the character stored.

The deleting of the character is the primary concern here, as that really did happen and she is really torn up about it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Marvel_(DC_Comics)

[ QUOTE ]
Fawcett ceased publishing Captain Marvel-related comics in 1953, due in part to a copyright infringement suit from DC Comics alleging that Captain Marvel was an illegal infringement of Superman. In 1972, DC licensed the Marvel Family characters and returned them to publication, acquiring all rights to the characters by 1991....
....
Because Marvel Comics trademarked their Captain Marvel comic book during the interim between the original Captain Marvel's Fawcett years and DC years, DC Comics is unable to promote and market their Captain Marvel/Marvel Family properties under that name. Since 1972, DC has instead used the trademark Shazam! as the title of their comic books and thus the name under which they market and promote the character. Consequently, Captain Marvel himself is sometimes erroneously referred to as Shazam.

No proof has been delivered. Prepare to see this thread go up into "flames" any moment now. It's View count is about to hit the roof. This thread insists that GMs are vile and unprofound. I asked a page or two ago for proof or a screenshot of this GM deleting or threatening to delete a person's character. I pay to play this game. Everyone does. You ALSO pay for good GM service. Be on the look out ANY TIME your character makes a copyright from now on.

Someone pissed me off the other day and I reported his costume for a copyright. It doesn't bother me. He should have shut his mouth and stop talking trash. I have no problem doing it again.

You are clueless and should just stop now. NCSoft was ALREADY SUED over this, so I guess the US legal system disagrees with your expert opinion. And, since I guess you weren't aware, Weird Al contacts the artists he parodies and GETS THEIR PERMISSION IN ADVANCE.

Heck, Micheal Jackson use to contact Wierd Al and ask him to do a parody of his newest songs.

OK, this is another joke thread, wanna know why?

pretty simple, 25% or more of the players aint americans, and what do you think those 25% do all day long?

Now, go check how one spells 'Snowy white " in swedish, italian, brasilian, french, etc...

So , you basically 'see' alts, but do you have any clue??
