Better Open World Content

I am currently in beta for another Super Hero game, and the only thing I like better is the better Open World Content, have they ever talked about making that part of CoH better?

For those of us not "in the know," what means this Open World Content?

We all know it's Champions Online, mate.

'Open World' is a very double-edged sword. A lot of more 'traditional' MMOs have stuff like that, open area quests or raids or whatever. The problem is, from what I hear it usually means you have to queue up to get a chance to kill a rabbit that has a chance to drop a foot that you need ten of, or open-world PvP, which is a greifer's paradise and everyone elses' hell.

I think he's referring to "open sandbox" gameplay - ie, you can go *anywhere* in a game environment and play any content/story arc in *any* order you want w/o being restricted by your achieved level status versus having to follow a set pattern of leveling certain stories in certain zones only at certain times of your toon's leveling lifespan.

Recent examples of "open sandbox" gameplay would be Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and the upcoming western game Red Dead Redemption.

Save limits to keep characters from dying all the time, that's pretty much what we have now.

Open World is a game killer for me. I think it sucks. I hate people that KS. And that is what happeneds in an open world environment.

CoX has an open world. No one uses it, obviously. You are not forced to go into the instanced missions. There is an ENTIRE ZONE (S) you could go explore.

I hated Open World stuff in WoW. I longed for a mission where I could enter, do my thing and afk as needed instead of running around all the time.

Don't like it, prefer instanced content with open zones with mobs if I feel like it.

Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!
168760: A Death in the Gish. 3 missions, 1-14. Easy to solo.
Infinity Villains
Champion, Pinnacle, Virtue Heroes

I like big open world events from time to time. And I used to enjoy teaming against Giant Monsters in CoX. Lusca was one of my favourites. But it's just not worth the pain any more.

Actually the Open World content system sucks.

I'm sorry but I'd rather now have to have spawn camping/stealing and waiting for spawns in this game. So [censored] no, to more open world content in this game.

That'be cool. If they had the option I'd turn it on. It'd beat the current blandness.

I really wish we had open world content in CoX.

the zones are richly detailed for us to ignore as we head to our door mission.

Ooo, even better. Let's put a thick black line around your characters because it's more "super-heroey".

Dec out.

There's all kinds of it available, but most people don't want to "hunt x number of y in zone z".

I think there is room for some more open world missions in CoH -- there is a little bit, but not enough.

I agree with others that KS (kill stealing) and camping aren't fun, but there is something to be said about doing missions in the open world -- it's easier to run into others who are doing your mission and start a team that way (to avoid kill stealing).

More variation on the mission doors would be a good thing for CoH...

Having some open world stuff is cool, but I'm happy that the majority is instanced.

Open World stuff we have
Normal Street Sweeping
Hazard zones (or hazard like areas in the zone in COV)
Hellion Fires
Troll Raves
Assorted GMs
Lusca (being 9 GMs in one, Lusca is special)
Hami
Rikti Ship raid

With the Hami griefing that used to go on, and the amount of 'use' others of those get, youc an see why the Devs here don't spend a lot more time on it. People 'play' a zone event for the badges, then leave and dont come back to it.

Vision isn't the problem. I just happen to like my comic book superheroes to look like comic book superheroes. For my superhero tastes, this game is mundane in many ways. But I realise that a stylistic approach freaks out the squares.

Edit, because it is just such a joke.

Enjoy it when it comes out.

You see in my happy world, with my happy heroes we like it when things look 3D. We also apreciate it when a game reflects our vision of how things should be. Instead of someone elses Vision messin with things.

[/ QUOTE ]

Indeed. And this game doesn't reflect my vision of how things should be. Someone else's vision is mucking with things and in a far deeper manner than just aesthetics.

This reminds me of when EQ was threatened with losing it's throne as King and everyone claimed that any new game coming out was going to suck.

We all know how that turned out.

I have a feeling Champions will do well and will be a fine game regardless of the naysaying. It doesn't even have to pull from the CoX crowd, there are MANY bored WoW players looking for a new home. Not to mention other games considering how long it's been since a new MMO came out. At the very least a lot of people will try it just because it's new and releasing by itself.

Just look at how many people tried that Sandbox MMO that released at the beginning of the year. I forgot what it's called at this point but a lot of people tried it even though they couldn't even offer a place to purchase the client.

[/ QUOTE ]only if you choose to. you know what i love doing villside? going to the haunted fort and catching pirates in those ghost traps. Having interesting zone specific events(which MUST be raid coded) is quite a lot of fun, and doesnt distract from the flow of the game proper, it just gives you more options to how you want to play the game. In all these years since it came out, i have not ignored a fire alarm in steel while solo, making stuff like that would improve the superhero feel of the game significantly.
