Solution to city-of-farming angst

When everyone in the zone/raid instance/server instance complains of the exact same symptoms with different client hardware, the problem is most likely NOT on the clients.

Granted, there will be some variation, but when the extreme issues move from the ends of the bell curve to smack in the middle, then "upgrade your computer" ceases to be a viable option. At that point it's simply server and network congestion, and no amout of money thrown at Alienware, Newegg, or <insert high-end computer vendor here> will help, much. Instead the people running the servers need to call THEIR vendors and say, "OK, we need to add X, Y, and Z, because we've so much going on we're dropping traffic to and from the clients."

Or, alternatively, balance things out, so that a large crowd engaged in one activity don't add to the lag and server load of another crowd doing another activity in the same instance. My idea was to make the AE complex similar to Ouroboros or Pocket D, its OWN ZONE, and that clicking on the building entrance would transport you there.

We would lose out on the 'cool view'... but I'd trade that for lag any day. Shoot, set the markets up this way too. That'll limit market lag to only those people at the market (if the zone is big enough you can set it up as several vendors spread out in a large area instead of just one), and the city zones won't hiccup at all. It also becomes easier to instance, so as you get more crowds, you start making Market 2, AE 2, etc etc.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wow, didn't read huh? That particular tidbit was in response to how to get less lag during ship raid or hami. That was why I made sure to quote it in my post.

I have a total of 43 plays on my arc in about two weeks. I think I've done pretty well. Of course, I didn't just throw it out there and assume everyone would rush to it, either.

Bout the same here. The ironic thing is my story arc is doing better than my ticket/reward/badge oriented mission.

Yes, "there has been farming always", but before I14 institutionalized the farming in a dev-supported manner, it was something that was a whole hell of a lot easier to ignore. And it didn't have anywhere near the impact on teaming to do things other than farming. Yes, the problems were there before, but all I14 did was aggravate them.

And let's get one thing straight right now. Despite what the Farmheads keep saying here and in the other forum threads, the City of Farming issue is a problem. It is harming the game experience (that is, the *FUN*) for a lot of players. And when a player isn't having fun, he'll take his $15 a month (or in my case, $60 a month... my kids all have their own accounts too) somewhere else. If that happens often enough, the devs might regret giving sanction to farming through I14.

[/ QUOTE ]

So, because you don't like doing it, it isn't fun for someone else? I don't like sewing, that doesn't mean my grandmother doesn't enjoy doing it.

[ QUOTE ]
Regarding the non-play issue. I'm another person who spent several hours putting together a mission with an actual storyline, only to see it NEVER GET PLAYED because its been forced to the bottom of the list after all the farking farms. That's frustrating, and frustrating = NOT FUN. More reason for me to not renew my subscription to CoH. And I'm not the only one.

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe noone liked your story? custom mobs? made it too difficult? Or, I know, A lot of people enjoy playing a different type of game than you enjoy. That doesn't invalidate their opinions in the slightest and their rankings are quite valid. Just because you like it, doesn't mean the rest of the playerbase does.

[ QUOTE ]

To all you hairballs who say "move to a different server", I've got 36 alts on my primary server. I've been playing on that server since I started the game. Why the hell should I walk just because you jerks are ruining the server for me now?

Yeah, its a personal problem. Its just a game. But you know what? If we were sitting across a table "just playing a game" and you guys acted in the idiotic manner the farmers act, I'd toss your [censored] out of my house. Because "just a game" isn't a reason to piss all over other people.

Just my three drachmas. Your mileage obviously varies.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have never suggested anyone move to a different server, with the exception of lowbies I occassionally meet who are trying to roleplay. To them, I always recommend a transfer to virtue (yes, i know RPers exist other places, but if you are sending a new player to the highest concentration, that would be the place)as the unofficial home of RP in the CoX universe. However, if you choose not to use the tools provided to streamline your experience, there is nothing anyone can do for you.

Carnage Creeper broadcasts "50 troller LF AEFarm"
Amazing Arnold broadcasts "lvl4 blaster LF Sewer"
Jack the Quick broadcasts "LF SewerTrial"
Samuri Sam broadcasts "LF Statesman TF"

Every one of these is a viable, propper chat. If many more people wish to do one than the other...so be it.

that is the 1 sure way to gut the MA. There are not enough people willing to wade through your pitiful rp arcs. You are not the great author you think you are. I see the people that get their sg to rate their mission all 5 star and then get a couple of 1 stars and complain. Maybe your stuff really is crap.

[/ QUOTE ]

You can bet than the MA is gonna be gut of rewards before long. Getting 7000 Tickets ( aka 2 Gold Rolls aka 2 Pool C recipes ) in less than 15 minutes of farming is simply broken.

Rewards are not balanced with the rest of the game. Any reason why MA should be more rewarding over time than any Task Forces or contact story arcs?

And about the XPs. Exploits will get fixed obviously. You really think it is normal that if i blow NPC explosives that wipe all a spawn i get full reward? It simply alot of little things like that, devs were not aware of or could not fix right away. But they will.

[/ QUOTE ]

Honestly I cant see why they'd fix tickets. they already fixed em once because a lot of people were angry that rewards in the MA got progressively more and more worthless as team size increased.

If that is the case then, maybe devs should triple TF and story arc Merit rewards.

Mind explain why doing a Katie TF is not granting one single pool C recipe roll for beating 10 AV and doing more than 1 mission while doing 1 single AE farm gives about 2 pool C reward rolls, and that in less than 30 minutes of play?

Broken. It is broken.

Yes that is a giant problem. Its right up there that beating same said AV 10 times doesn't even award 1 freaking SO.

The problem is with the katie TF

Posted

Poor example. No TF redside has to take longer than 45 minutes if you choose. I can run the mantis in just over 30 min for 38 merits. That doesn't mean most people can. Katie gives crap because it takes far less than 30 min to defeat it. Merits are based on average time for completion. This is also why the RSF only gives 25 merits. It is a go/no go type event..either you win in short order or you loose and loose soundly. I would recommend you find something better to measure against personally.

This isn't to say that ticket rewards aren't out of wack on the high side and that they weren't out of wack on the low side on release. The devs have stated they are not set in stone and will be adjusted accordingly, just like merits.

However, I will submit, even if they manage to find an equilibrium for ticket reward vs merit reward, the AE will still be the medium of choice based on customability as well as pick your own loot, and the lack of a team needed.

The reason for this was the same reason EM was nerfed. Social engineering. Too many people were doing x. X isnt necessarily bad, but we want them to do y and z. So we will punish x and make it not worth as much. Instead of content, I13 gave us reward management. Nothing new to do, but they spend loads of time changing what we get for doing it. If they butcher MA in the name of reward management, they had better have a lot of kick [censored] content to push out there, because they wont have a lot to show for over a year of development.

I understand they must make changes to manage things. Contrary to what some posters here say, making a 50 in 2 days is very far from the norm. The same thing was possible under preI14, but very rare. Most people like to sleep and take a bio break sometime in a 48 hour period. But a good pl'er could do it. But it is a little too easy now. My hope is that the devs decide to trim, not hack. No chainsaw vasectomies.

Actually it was very possible assuming your bank account was high enough to constantly fund paying for Lib farms with a 46 mentor. The difference is now the rather large barrier of 15 million per run that a good lib farm was garnering is no longer there so more people are taking advantage of it.

(15 million comes from broadcast on freedom server the last week or two prior to architect going live)

Ok, I will attempt to use a metaphor from real life. I live in a quiet area but recently the city built a mall a few blocks from my house. This has resulted in extreme noise pollution, heavy traffic, and a bunch of hoodlems making trouble at night. What can I do? Pettition the city that approved it in the first place? Move to a different area? Stand outside the mall telling all the ppl to go away? Lol of course not. I went and brought some shoes and ate at a tasty chinese place. It is what it is. Just try to enjoy life please instead of spamming farm and anti farm in broadcast. Im sure the devs know what up and will fix it soon and beaching about it just makes life harder. Personally I want to take advantage of it before it gets nerfed.

I did think about making it just hitting each other with rocks. It's still abusive behavior, but not necessarily lethal.

But let's try to strip that out. The argument seems to be that because a certain type of play cannot be entirely prevented, no efforts at all should be made to do so? Farming is being presented as a fait accompli, and that everyone should just give up and accept it. Laws cannot be 100% enforced; therefore, there should be no laws. Anything goes. Anarchy.

I suggest you look up the fallacy of the excluded middle. The devs' inability to do away with all exploits and forms of farming as soon as they arise does not consititute official endorsement or tolerance of same. And if one entirely rejects their authority to say whether it's right or not, because the cold practical fact is they can't stop it entirely, that doesn't mean we should just accept its presence either.

[/ QUOTE ]

Once more, you seem to be confused between exploit and farm. Exploits are bad. They are to be found, reported, and removed. Farms are nothing more than finding the most effective path to your goal and repeating it over and over until your goal is reached.

You seem to be laboring under the impression that there is a rule against farming. There isn't. Farming is not encouraged or intended, but it is by no means outlawed. If you can prove me wrong, I will retract my statements and champion your cause. However, the fact remains that while some of the administrative staff is antifarm, including Posi...the official position of the game leaves the method viable as long as exploits are not being used.

If you don't think farming is accepted, look at merits. Without doing TF every day, especially redside, It would take you forever and a day to get the merits needed for one set of rare recipies, much less a build worth.

[/ QUOTE ]

This has been said before; there is a difference between farming dev. created missions and the farm missions being created using the MA.

The farm missions in the MA are set up in such a way as to give rewards far above what you can get playing regular content, and far above any MA mission set up in the way the dev's expected missions to be made using the MA system.

The MA System was not set up with the expectation that players would create farm missions (look up the definition of bug the dev's use). And setting up a farm mission provides a statistical advantage for the player doing so (look up their definition of exploit).

The one thing you farmers seem to forget is that farming normal content is something that is basically private in nature. (This is true to a certain extent when playing a MA farm mission, as long as you aren't spamming messages for farm teams)

Putting a farm mission on the MA system puts your behavior on public display. Sort of like running on field during a Yankees/Red Sox game wearing nothing but your Nikes.

What may be acceptable behavior in the privacy of your home is not acceptable in other settings.

How ironic that NCSoft puts out its new box, and related advertising, to pull in new players when the game they're being introduced to is a caricature of what it was meant to be.

Regular teaming is dead. In an hour in Virtue AP I saw one LFT that wasn't AE/Farm related, and I'm betting there were zero takers for that. Is this really what anyone wants new players to see?

"Here's this cool superhero MMO. What you do is you create a character, then you go into this building in the start zone and kick the crap out of one kind of enemy. Over and over and over again. Within a day or two you'll have a level 50 character. Warning: if you DO decide to play some real missions you'll find progression unbelievably slow in comparison, so you probably won't want to do that. If you do you'd better get used to soloing."

More importantly, will they stick around if their source of instant gratification is taken away from them? Will they stick around if it isn't?

Well, no.

I was level 1 through to level 4. I wasn't particularly looking for team myself - just wandering around hitting hellions and watching the broadcast spam.

Pre-I14 I would have probably had one or two random invites - which I might or might not have accepted depending on my mood - but I'd definately have seen more than a single solitary attempt by someone to form a sewer team.

Let's not kid ourselves that there are as many non-AE teaming opportunities out there for the casual/new player as there were pre-I14. We both know that isn't true.

And I still say that by Positron's own letter, while it may not be intended, it isn't outlawed either. The current system is what the dev's implimented as acceptable. Until it is changed, one way or another, we can make the missions as we see fit. By your definition, ITF is an exploit because the sheer number of EB's and bosses leads to much greater than normal exp and rewards. That is no different that what the farmers are doing with the exception that
1) there isn't necessarily a level requirement for the content
2) you don't need atleast 6 people to start

People who mention gainig 18 levels a run as unusual have obviously never gone into a liberate TV mission with a 46 mentor at lvl 1. I often used that mission to go from 5 to 20 just so i could get to stamina. Comms are a statistical advantage, it is being fixed in the patch on test. But farming a mission is not. Period. The only difference between modern farming and the previous issues was the fact that you had to pay to do it usually and that detered most people. Now you can do it at will...

As far as too many tickets for doing something. I personally feel merits are too low for TF content. I feel baseline should be a TF is worth 1 roll and the rest of the values adjusted from there. Once more, the powergamers can pull merits in at the same speed as tickets. Me and my crew had what we called the hour of power...100 merits in an hour redside. We did this every night together. The current model? Now everyone can hit such levels without having a SEAL team going through. And what is the effect of this....the market has significantly higher supplies of recipes. Everyone can now afford to trick out a build. The only things that require large sums of money are the Ultra demand (lotg recharge, numia unique, etc), which are coming down slowly, and the purps which are decreasing in supply...but they are supposed to be the ultra rare anyway. There are no more pay farms, which put a considerable hurt to the RMT crowd...especially with the market values of everything decreasing as well.

All of this, thanks to farming the architect missions.

You cannot punish or ban playstyle. The minute you try to ban the powergamer is the minute this game will die. Powergaming is the opposite end of the spectrum of the roleplayers. The minute you add numbers and values to things, powergaming will look for ways to maximise them to their advantage.

Just because there is an advantage, doesn't mean it is an exploit. Otherwise there would be no difference between a grav/ff and a fire/kin. And if there is no difference, why bother with the different powersets or AT's at all?

No matter the content, powergamers will find a way to max their rewards. The only way to stop a powergamer would be to hardcap the amount of reward possible per day, hour, week, whatever. The moment you limit how much your players can play in a pay to play game, is the moment you sign the suicide note for your game. (and yes i know ther eis a ticket hardcap, but since it is the same as the maximum tickets you can hold it is moot)

I was against, but not vocally against, farming.
That changed recently, when a friend of mine who does farm occasionally told me that in an eight man team, only himself and the mission leader had veteran badges of any stripe.

This means there are newbies that have never seen anything but the inside of an AE building and massive farm teams.

Two points:
I had a level 42 corruptor, a Radition Blast/Kinetics, in a mission ask me "What do u mean SB?" and "What's Fulcrum Shift?"

I had a level 50 Brute ask me what these enhancement things that were dropping actually did.
He didn't have Stamina, but he did have Flurry, Jump Kick, and the ENTIRE Presence power pool.

Previously these things were rare and hillarious, now they are common and sad... This is what farming brings to the game, any real player's frickin' nightmare. People who step out of the AE and grab a mission full of KoA and have no idea what to do to not die repeatedly.

It's not acting as a tool for experienced players to bypass content they've already played like the farming of the standard missions was. This is a travesty, not just an exploit.

And I suppose your first character was a masterpiece of build engineering off the block?

Just because they didn't have vet badges doesn't they were locked away in the AE. It just means they were new.

Did you stop and help these people, give them pointers to their builds and play style?

Did you point them to the forums where they might find help with their chosen AT?

Or did you just OMGZOR NUBS IR213374U go away?

You don't come into this game knowing everything. I have seen numerous people from other mmo's come here and try to build like they would there. Brute..huh, must be evil tank..more taunt is good. I know my first character was a energy/energy blaster and i thought the more KB the better...besides, it just looked cool. It was 6 months before I had found an AT and power combination I liked enough to actually reach stamina. I didn't start including hasten in my builds for another 3 months or so....

So where do you get off downing new players for what they don't know? Did the farmers confiscate some instruction manual to awsome builds that is now included in the box set? If you or anyone else doesn't help them, how are they to learn?

What you call a nightmare..these newbs running around...I call a blessing. Because you know what? I still have that energy/energy blaster. He has gone through so many respecs and builds it isn't funny, but I would delete my ss/wp brute before i would get rid of him. The fact that these new faces are here should give you hope and faith that the game will keep bringing in new players and new subscription dollars. What you call nightmare, I call fantasy.

Attitudes like yours have driven more people away from MMO's than anything else short of game shut down. Thank god I never came across you when I was new to the game or I would never have gotten past the free month from purchase.

Problem is, the overnight 50s will have a steeper learning curve by far than those of us who took the slow road to 50. Not having a good grasp of what your powers can and can't do isn't so bad when you're fighting Skulls or Family on Villainous, but it will get you killed very quickly indeed when you join a team comprised of people who've been running Relentless since the mid 20s and are fighting Malta or Nemesis.

Which could, in turn, lead to the new player becoming frustrated and disillusioned, because he's got this level 50 character and he's not nearly as powerful as he'd expect to be.
