Joule, if you check the preorder options in the link, all that is confirmed, including the one month. And it's the normal price for the game these days.

Yep, sounds about right to me.

The Mac OS is based on BSD UNIX, which shares little if any code with Linux.

Darwin BSD.

With Boot Camp, you could make a Linux partition, just as others made XP or Vista partitions.

But, really, why dumb the Mac down?

WINE already runs CoH better then CoH runs natively on the same hardware. Besides a quirk during installation and 2 other curious bugs, it runs pretty much flawlessly already. I'm just saying, if there is enough demand seen for a port OSX, which has a lower installed base then GNU/Linux, there should be enough budget to at least work with the WINE project and get a first class solution for GNU/Linux players of CoH as well.

The text chat thing (single escape won't clear out), the costume selection (can do /cc 0-4), the badly interlaced cursor, and randomly unable to /sync until you log out are the last few things I had to deal with.

Compiling the new one from src has been a pain, though that could be with SLES.

Mac OS X has its foundations in Nextstep, which used BSD. Both Nextstep and BSD pre-date Linux.

My boss, who does not play or even really like games but loves Macs, and whom I have been annoying for over 4 years with my frequent talk about CoH, actually knew this before I did, and was the one who informed me of it this morning.

That was a really strange experience.

This is great news guys, and totally unexpected!

Ok, this may be quite shameful of me, so I'll be hiding in my shame closet for the rest of the day!

But - here goes - One of our PR guys said, "Why isn't the CoH on Mac story on the front page of Macworld?" Someone else replied with "Well, it's probably because only 7 people have recommended the story."

So, if you like the story at Macworld ( http://www.macworld.com/article/1364...coh.html?t=109 is the URL) click the little recommend button at the bottom of the article.

Thought: This isn't something you decide overnight. Can you IMAGINE the grand-slam, out-of-the-park update i13, "The Architect," complete with Day Jobs, Level Pacts, Mission Architect, Pain Domination and Shields, was originally intended to be?

@_@

Not to say i13 and i14 aren't going to be awesome, but man... you guys were aiming for the freakin' moon here! No wonder you kept holding back information... Must've been like holding a king and ace, then watching a king and an ace come out on the flop!

Wonder if Mids would be kind enough to take on the task of porting MHD to OS X. I'd try and get it running through a compatibility layer, but it uses .Net, which a lot of those are picky about.

First of all, a huge CONGRATULATIONS to NCsoft and TransGaming for this news! It's one of the most genuinely exciting things that I've seen in the pipeline since the game's creation way back in 2004! I've been wanting this to happen for a long, long time, and I really think that it will open up City of Heroes to a significant new market. Along with the mission designer for Issue 14, I really think that these are the days when City of Heroes will start getting its second wind and bump up significantly in the MMO market above what are currently its peers.

Second of all, this:
[ QUOTE ]
Now that you guys are working with Transgaming is there a Linux version in the future? I'd really love to stop dual booting my computer just to play CoX.

[/ QUOTE ]
This point is 100% on the money. It's the exact same company. City of Heroes already works really well on Cedega, and there are just a few minor little tweaks left to get it humming at 100%. Please, please, please keep talking to them and push into the Linux market as well. I promise, you won't regret it.

Third of all, I've busted NCsoft's chops a lot over the nickle-and-diming of selling add-on packs, promising that it's to hire more developers and make a better game faster, and not really delivering anything faster or better that we didn't have before.

Well, if this is the direction you guys are going in, and we can expect more game-changing (no pun intended) announcements like this, then you really are doing a good job convincing me that I was wrong, something I'd be more than happy to admit. I'm not quite there yet, but keep it up. With results like this, it probably won't be long.

Oh, and P.S., I've posted it as a news item on the front page of the Paragon Wiki, complete with shiny Apple logo and everything.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.

Ooohh - I could see that..

Maybe they could do that and have a head-piece that is an apple stem; combine that with a new power 'Throw Seeds' and we can have fruit trees allover Paragon!

I have nothing against Mac gamers... (all 5 of you .... j/k j/k)

Well, from the point of view of "CoX on Linux" people, this should be a good move.

While Macs are based on a BSD derivative, porting from BSD to Linux is not THAT horrible to do. Most of the libraries and headers are indentical (functionally), so if they have a makefile & source that will compile and link under BSD, getting it to compile and link under Linux should not be too difficult a proposition.

Now, the real issue comes in the whole 'number of flavors' and 'variation of hardware' problems. Macs are (effectively) closed hardware, so developing for them is easier (if it runs on one, it should run on all). Linux boxes vary WILDLY. And having builds for just the most popular flavors would still entail having to maintain 5-10 different builds.....they sure aren't going to release source so people can compile it themselves!

But it is a step in that direction. Since CoX uses OpenGL for it's graphics API, porting to Linux isn't quite the bear it could be....like for a lot of other games (which are D3D based).

Wait....is there a Mac emulator for Linux?

This was obviously added because the game is too easy to maintain now and the Devs want more of a challenge.

Say how about making my 5200 graphics card work right again? Ever since NVidia patched it last December the buildings are all striped.

LH,

Seems that the purchasable "Mac Version" is simply another Game Edition (like GvE or the Game Card or the Collector's Edition). So, can a PC user just simply purchase this edition, add the code to their current account and enjoy the free month and in-game goodies?

[/ QUOTE ]

That is what I am thinking also. Confirmation would be nice, but we will hear eventually I imagine.

I'm working on clarification on that front. Likely, it will come when we do the follow up article with the specifics and screenshots of what the extras for the Mac version consist of.
