Discussion: Good vs. Evil Coming to the Mac!

Isn't OS X based on Linux?
[/ QUOTE ]
Um, no.
OS X is based on FreeBSD UNIX (with a completely unique GUI). Linux was another version of UNIX.

LH,
Seems that the purchasable "Mac Version" is simply another Game Edition (like GvE or the Game Card or the Collector's Edition). So, can a PC user just simply purchase this edition, add the code to their current account and enjoy the free month and in-game goodies?
[/ QUOTE ]
That is what I am thinking also. Confirmation would be nice, but we will hear eventually I imagine.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm working on clarification on that front. Likely, it will come when we do the follow up article with the specifics and screenshots of what the extras for the Mac version consist of.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, if my scenario isn't the case, then for people who buy the "Mac Version", they'll never be able to add the Collector Edition codes to their account and pick up those in-game goodies (nor the GvE or Game Card editions). So, please pass along that it would probably be wise to allow the stacking in order to prevent creating 'Mac Orphan' accounts that are cut off from accessing the other editions.

Our PR Team just sent out a list of links of news sites that picked up the press release. I thought I'd repost here to share, in no particular order:
*BIG LIST REMOVED*

Hooray exposure! The number of sites picking this up at once makes it more likely that non-Mac people will see it too and be intrigued to investigate!

For future reference:
Someone informed me that putting line returns (the Enter key) into the "hardware" box will throw that error. So keep those out, and you'll be fine!

Winner! Thank you!
I'd be dancing in the streets over this, but my Mac is a PowerPC, dates to 2004. But its still newer and faster than my PC.
Oh well.
But at least I can recruit all my family members that use Macs and play WoW. Everyone else has a newer machine...
This is the most exciting thing I have ever heard from the CoH world. I've got a killer mac and an not-so-killer PC laptop. I'm playing on safe mode as it is, and it blows.
I've been playing for three years like this, I can't wait to play the game how it's supposed to be played :]
Rumors say that the Cider version of City of Heroes for the Mac will feature the SecuROM DRM. Is this true? Why would a downloadable client for a MMORPG come with SecuROM?
I've been waiting for a Mac version of CoX for a long, long time and this is great news - but this SecuROM business is really worrying me. I would feel better if you could confirm or deny this rumor in an official manner.

I've found the SecuROM rumor in this article:
http://www.tuaw.com/2008/10/30/city-...gamings-cider/
... I apologize in advance for sounding a little snarky, but every change to CoX that required purchase has always involved applying a serial code to your game account.
Why hasn't anyone thought of the fact that a person with an existing account buying the mac client would just be applying the serial for use of the client itself? Your account would still have the previous purchased codes/costume parts, and you would have the mac client on top of it.
Has that crossed no one's mind?

SecuROM shouldn't affect an MMO that can be accessed from any PC (and now apparently, Mac! ) in the world just by downloading the client. I'm wondering if that article wasn't just jumping to conclusions based on previous releases using Cider.
Posi has already stated that you need only download the client to your Mac system and you can continue to use the account you're paying for now. No DRM should be involved.

Why on earth would that form of DRM be needed for a MMO? I could pass game discs out to everyone I know and they're worthless for anything without a paid game account. While I wouldn't be surprised if it was an option for other types of games, there's literally no need for it on a MMO.
I'm calling this bologna. And the cheap mystery meat type, too.

There's no reason to use SecuRom for an MMO (not that there's ever a justifiable reason to use it for anything), so I hope that this announcement is something they can use, not something they will use on everything, and specifically this client. Because it will, at best, be a big warning in recommendations I make.

Yes, just like the Good vs. Evil edition of the game, the Macintosh version will include some special in-game items, including:
<ul type="square">[*]Mission Teleporter Power - Players can save time and get right into the action by teleporting directly to their active mission.
[*]Exclusive Valkyrie Costume set - Costume pieces include two varieties of wings, a cape, a skirt/kilt, pants, boots, shoulders, chest, gloves, belts, and helmet with multiple details.[/list]These items will be available separately for purchase in early 2009 for customers who are not playing on a Mac. Well have further details of these exciting options, including screenshots, in the near future.
[/ QUOTE ]
Lighthouse, I think the people responsible for labeling things "exclusive" want to send people like LiquidX to an early grave just so they can spin in it.
I know "exclusive" in marketing-speak means for a limited time and/or a limited number of ways, but still.
Also when are the 2 core Collector Editions (CoH DVD, CoV DVD) going to get the same treatment (separate purchase for in-game goodies)?

Side note: I've got two Capcom games with SecuROM. They work fine, no problems to my system. Christian Sven Svensson at Capcom noted that there are various ways for developers to implement SecuROM ranging from minimal to draconian. Capcom has chosen, at least on the games I've bought, to go the lesser route. DMC4 required no registration key, no online activation, no anything other than I keep the disc in the tray. Bionic Commando: Rearmed has offered me no issues.
Your mileage may vary, blahblahblah.
I'm not saying this because I think SecuROM is this great thing every game should have. I'm saying this its not always as horrible/bad as some folks make it out to be. DRM being a touchy subject and all, I figured I'd better throw this out now...

It must of been from your evil twin brother darkroom. Spreading rumors of doom before we know anything....a villains dream.
@Nalrok
Tis cool (never heard of them myself). I guess the frustration for me is that any "news site" can be cited later for anything.
Apologies if I offended.

I mean, I don't trust TUAM and their views on... everything. Yes, their sources are reliable and direct, but the people who cover the issues are a little uptight. Same goes for their rabid following of commentators. Watch out kids, it's a jungle in there.

From that announcement, it seems that the piece of software that is under the SecureROM is the "Cider" program (aka Windows Emulator for the Mac) itself, not City of Heroes specifically.
