Discussion: Good vs. Evil Coming to the Mac!
Now that you guys are working with Transgaming is there a Linux version in the future? I'd really love to stop dual booting my computer just to play CoX.

Thats cool. Im glad the Mac users are able to finally get in on the fun. If this announcement had come 6 months earlier I wouldn't have bought a new PC. My main question is this: When will open beta start for the PC players?

How will this affect people who have macs and already have accounts? (I dont have a Mac, I'm just wondering)
[/ QUOTE ]
Your game account will work no matter which client you are using.

Could you clarify - if someone isn't interested in the goodies, will the Mac client be available for free to those who already have active accounts?

It's.
About.
Time.
We've lost waaay too many Mac players to That Other MMO, solely because there exists a Mac client for it but not CoH.
"City of Heroes. April 27, 2004 - August 31, 2012. Obliterated not with a weapon of mass destruction, not by an all-powerful supervillain... but by a cold-hearted and cowardly corporate suck-up."
This is great. Now my friend will be able to play.

Excellent, I am in for this! (Mac user since 1984)

1) Will non-mac users be given access to the bonus power and costume in the future.
2) How will this affect people who have macs and already have accounts? (I dont have a Mac, I'm just wondering)

Yes, just like the Good vs. Evil edition of the game, the Macintosh version will include some special in-game items, including:
<ul type="square">[*]Mission Teleporter Power - Players can save time and get right into the action by teleporting directly to their active mission.
[*]Exclusive Valkyrie Costume set - Costume pieces include two varieties of wings, a cape, a skirt/kilt, pants, boots, shoulders, chest, gloves, belts, and helmet with multiple details.[/list]These items will be available separately for purchase in early 2009 for customers who are not playing on a Mac. Well have further details of these exciting options, including screenshots, in the near future.
We'll have the above posted in a separate forum announcement, along with information about the closed beta test of the Mac version, shortly.

Wow! Color me a little envious in the meantime, but I can dig it
This is great news - no longer will Mac users need to have Boot Camp or emulators to play the game. Bravo guys!
It uses OpenGL, so IMHO it wouldn't be too much of stretch But I post this as a Linux "idiot savant."

As I understand it, when Transgaming brings a game to the Mac, it mostly just wraps the game up with the same code that's in Cedega. So if you pick up Cedega, it should be about the same.

Awesome news. Of course since it's running through a compatibility layer, the performance under OS X won't be as good as the native Windows version, but if it'll run reasonably well I'll be happy, and it might finally give me a reason to delete my Boot Camp partition (well, if I can get Mids working in OS X, that is! ).
Hmm... looks like the GMA950 isn't officially supported. I'll be trying it anyways, because I know of some games that don't support the GMA950 that run fine on it anyways (I'm looking at you, C&C 3).

It really needs to be posted there so the largest crowd can see the good news.
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this make CoH only the third MMO playable in the Mac OS? The other two I know of being EVE and Runescape.

This can only be a good thing. It shows me that NCSoft is serious about keeping CoH going long into the future.
Here is an idea though, work with the folks at the WINE project to make sure that WINE handles the details of running the client better then it currently does. This should require very little time and effort to check the effects of updates once the few current anomalies are dealt with, and almost no extra coding time vs the return. This would make use of the Free/Open Source Community to do what it does best, code. You get the community to do the heavy lifting of making WINE work with CoH.
WINE already runs CoH better then CoH runs natively on the same hardware. Besides a quirk during installation and 2 other curious bugs, it runs pretty much flawlessly already. I'm just saying, if there is enough demand seen for a port OSX, which has a lower installed base then GNU/Linux, there should be enough budget to at least work with the WINE project and get a first class solution for GNU/Linux players of CoH as well.

Blizzard has always support the Mac with its products, so WoW was availalble on the Mac from day one.

Stonedog, when Transgaming does a "conversion", they mostly wrap up the software with a variant on wine, that they call Cider. So it's not a major rewrite, and I suspect you'll have the same experience if you run the client under Transgaming's Cedega.

Yeah, see that now. For some reason I didn't see the extra pages of replies getting the whole deal. This is likely the same thing Eve did with Cedega to get a Linux client. They didn't do such a good job though.
Thing is CoH already runs great under standard WINE, a little work with the community is all that would be needed to get the normal client to run perfectly under GNU/Linux. I understand about the extra work needed for OSX though, they have no community to smooth out the rough spots so bringing in Cedega to do the deed is understandable.
Isn't "popular" in that press release a little kind?

For future reference:
Someone informed me that putting line returns (the Enter key) into the "hardware" box will throw that error. So keep those out, and you'll be fine!

It's hard to argue that it isn't the most popular comic book MMO.
