Please use this thread to discuss the below announcement
# Mission Teleporter Power - Players can save time and get right into the action by teleporting directly to their active mission.
# Exclusive Valkyrie Costume set - Costume pieces include two varieties of wings, a cape, a skirt/kilt, pants, boots, shoulders, chest, gloves, belts, and helmet with multiple details.
[/ QUOTE ]
Exclusive costume sets based on what variety of computer you happen to own? That is incredibly freaking lame. Oh, but you can buy them if you don't have a Mac. Meh.
You know, I'm all for opening up the game to more platforms, but locking people out of game content based on what hardware they've chosen to spend upwards of $1000 dollars on for the most part is infuriating. Or are you going to be providing exclusive items to PC users free of charge that Mac users can chose to buy?
I'm having a hard time coming up with civil language for how obnoxious this decision is.

But they don't get the normal Good vs. Evil goodies of the jump pack, the Pocket D teleporter, and the justice and sinister costumes.
And while it'll be the package that Mac people are pointed to...a new PC user could get that package and download the PC client, while a Mac user wanting the old GvE goodies could buy the old package and download the Mac client.
I'm a mac user who will be switching to running the game on his Mac (probably...my PC is newer and has a better video card than my Mac, so I may stick with the PC), and I won't get those goodies automatically because I'm using the client, as I understand it.

This kinda sucks, because I had several Valkyrie toons planed for the new Shield set. Oh well, now I'm gonna be a clone.
Happy for Mac users and the new shinny though....

How will this affect people who have macs and already have accounts? (I dont have a Mac, I'm just wondering)
[/ QUOTE ]
Your game account will work no matter which client you are using.
[/ QUOTE ]
Could you clarify - if someone isn't interested in the goodies, will the Mac client be available for free to those who already have active accounts?
[/ QUOTE ]
That is NOT what was said. The MAC Client will, just like the Good vs. Evil client, be a separate purchase. You need to purchase the MAC client to get the MAC client.
Without that, Transgaming wouldn't make any money and wouldn't have any reason to do/support the port
On the other hand, regardless of which client you USE, you can play the game: that's what the quote says: you can play using your existing account from any client (that you have purchased)
Now, from another perspective, I don't know that there will be any copy protection to prevent you from copying that Mac client to another computer, but I don't in any way advocate that. I just hope that it comes out at $19.99 or $29.99 TOPS and not $49.99: transgaming isn't writing any code for this, they're just wrapping the existing code in a Wine box, so there's no reason for this to cost so much! (Sorry Gav, but I just can't recommend people giving you money for nothing.)
For the record is just a mac client right? So mac players and windows players will be on the same server, etc and be able to team together?
If it turns out like that then this could be a nice population boost for the lower servers.
Friends don't let friends buy an ncsoft controlled project.
I hope the recharge is really long.
I'm only ladylike when compared to my sister.
Stark, you raise a good point. They did say you don't have to open a new account, but do we need to buy the package anyway? Good question.
If you go to the preorder link it's $20.

To everyone complaining about the Mac users getting more stuff that PC users can't get, the way its sounding, according to the red-name posts above, is that the $20 is for the mac client and probably a month's subscription and a game code that activates the Valkyrie and Mission TP stuff. They also said they will provide the costumes and powers in something that sounds like a booster pack, or the Good VS Evil code so PC users will get the powers too if you want to pay the extra money for them. Sounds like the same concept as the Collectors Edition DVDs and the Good VS. Evil version serial codes. PC users, my guess, should be able to buy either the future 'booster pack' or the mac client version, get the code, upgrade the account, and get the goodies. You shouldn't have to spend $1000+ on a new computer to get the new powers and costumes unless you really want to play on a mac for other reasons.
Although this is purely speculation on my part. I in no way know this for sure, but sounds like a pretty good guess from what the red-names have said so far.
On a side note, I'm SOOOO glad I just bought my first mac last weekend (happy birthday to me) to learn the Mac OS and iPhone development. Can't wait to beta test!

I assume we'll be able to download the client without buying a copy, assuming we don't want or care about the bonus stuff, yes?
(For the record, I preordered the Mac Client anyway. I'm certainly going to drop the money on the Valkyrie set and the Mission Teleporter anyway, and if things are true to form the difference in cost will be the one free month we get anyway, so I'll add the code to my account, take the month, and enjoy delicious chick armor on my Mac on day one. But I assume I could get the client at no extra charge if I needed.)

That's a point. And like I said, I already preordered it. I mean, if you want to play on a Mac and if you want the new shiny things, there's no reason not to. Looking at past bonus material packs, players will almost certainly pay the difference between a month of play and the $19.99 this thing cost anyway, so by preordering I'm just paying for another month of play I would be getting anyway. Not A Big Deal.
So, for twenty bucks you can play native on your Mac and get some shiny things and an extra month of play. For probably 4-6 bucks you can get the new power and costume set without the Mac client or the extra month of play.
Seems fair to me. Heck, I've spent more than that on Crossover Games for Mac play by itself, and they didn't even give me chick armor.

No, you will be able to just download the client for Mac, with no cost involved (no "exclusive goodies" if you do though). If you have an active CoH subscription, you can play on Mac or PC.
And to answer another question while I am here...
Yes, these are all on the same servers as the PC players. There are no "Mac only" servers. PC users will be able to play and team with their Mac friends.

Yes, just like the Good vs. Evil edition of the game, the Macintosh version will include some special in-game items, including:
<ul type="square">[*]Mission Teleporter Power - Players can save time and get right into the action by teleporting directly to their active mission.
[*]Exclusive Valkyrie Costume set - Costume pieces include two varieties of wings, a cape, a skirt/kilt, pants, boots, shoulders, chest, gloves, belts, and helmet with multiple details.[/list]These items will be available separately for purchase in early 2009 for customers who are not playing on a Mac. Well have further details of these exciting options, including screenshots, in the near future.
We'll have the above posted in a separate forum announcement, along with information about the closed beta test of the Mac version, shortly.

I hope you plan to make that cape available at lvl 1 like you did for the aura's, since no matter how you slice it people will be paying for this content, whether they bought the box set or the pieces separate in early 2009.

Yay! I'll buy the goodies anyway though.
If we already have an account and we purchase the Mac version can we apply the free month and goodies to an existing account? I'm all for supporting the cause.

Good call, with lessons learned from the Cyborg Pack (and Vet Rewards to a lesser extent).

I suspect that, like any actual box purchase, a free month should be included with the purchase. So you can download for free without goodies, or you can buy the box and get the goodies plus a free month of play (like GvE for the PC).

Very true, and with that in mind they might wanna think of the old bought capes too, if they decide to do it with this cape. Though I don't see why they'd only do it for aura's and not cape's like this too. It's all just character effects after all, right?

I'm not sure how reliable a source they are, but the article on MacWorld says:

Following the open beta, the game will be released for digital distribution for $19.99 through GameTree Online, the online sales and download site operated by TransGaming. That charge will net you the game plus a month of game time; additional months cost $14.99 each.

Joule, if you check the preorder options in the link, all that is confirmed, including the one month. And it's the normal price for the game these days.

WINE already runs CoH better then CoH runs natively on the same hardware. Besides a quirk during installation and 2 other curious bugs, it runs pretty much flawlessly already. I'm just saying, if there is enough demand seen for a port OSX, which has a lower installed base then GNU/Linux, there should be enough budget to at least work with the WINE project and get a first class solution for GNU/Linux players of CoH as well.

The text chat thing (single escape won't clear out), the costume selection (can do /cc 0-4), the badly interlaced cursor, and randomly unable to /sync until you log out are the last few things I had to deal with.
Compiling the new one from src has been a pain, though that could be with SLES.
From what I understand, Mac uses a weird flavour of Linux anyhow.. so...?
