Thanks very much Zwill, for this post.

And a sincere thanks to all of Paragon Studios for the great work over the years. I am sincerely disappointed in NCSoft's decision, but I appreciate that it was out of Paragon's control.

Perhaps you didn't actually read what he said in those missions, eh?

Phipps, easily, is the most evil to me, because he's doing it all for his own sadistic enjoyment, not for power or control.
  3. Alignment change token, nice idea.

How about a powerset change token? Not an AT change token, but a powerset change token. I don't even need to change ATs, but I have a couple of 50s that I really don't want to play any more (and getting them a new powerset would make them fun again.)

Particularly with powerset proliferation: that always makes me go "FINALLY they made that powerset! I wouldn't have slaved away with this other powerset if that one had been available!"
  4. First, I'd like to say that without the text of the missions, I wouldn't play this game.

Sure, some people play for the costumes, some for the PvP (REALLY????), some for the uber-powers, but for me it's about the story. I really enjoy reading the content.

That being said, some of the content is a bit fanboy for me: I'm fine with it, but I'll skip it. I never really got "into" the Frank Sinatra (oops, johnny sonata) storyline in St. Martial for example. I thought it was well written and fun to play, but the story just never "grabbed" me for some reason. Whereas I totally always make sure to unlock Doc Buzzsaw: AWESOME writing there!

For emotional impact, though, it's Westin Phipps, easily. I mean, seriously, you do a mission where you poison food for poor people and when you turn it in he says this:

    Quote:
    Debriefing
Desperation, deprivation and despair are floating through the halls of Haven House now that everyone has heard about what you've done. I had a young mother bring her little children to me in tears.
'Oh, Mr. Phipps! My little Elsie and Sophia ate some of the food Character poisoned, and now they've gone blind! What will we do?'
Oh, I tell you, it took all the control I had to stop myself from laughing. But I put on my most sorrowful and sympathetic face for them, and took them all in. You've made this dreary charity case a simply delightful situation.
Now, whatever will I do with a desperate mother and her blind twin daughters? Hmmm...
    "Whatever will I do" indeed!!!!!

Run in, swing twice, get two warnings, back out or go to the adds, get sequestered because even after backing off you still have aggro. Repeat. Ugh.
That's exactly it: I was running out, being well away from either AV, identifying a good add I could target instead and then sequestered. and i look back and there's not a single melee person at the AV who sequestered me.

I think, in the end, it was simply "not enough tanks/brutes" (and perhaps those who were there weren't experienced with aggro management).

Sure, I can run around a corner and de-aggro that way, but if the AV follows me and then separates from the group, that's not good either, is it?

  7. OK, so first thing's first: I don't claim, by any stretch of the imagination, to be a master of this game. I enjoy it and have my 81 month badge, but that's not saying I'm an expert!

    That being said:
With my tank (the character I've progressed furthest in the incarnate system) I routinely join pickup groups to do the incarnate trials. Sometimes people aren't paying attention and things are not as good as other times, sometimes people aren't as good playing their characters or they have poor builds: it's all good! I like the fact that you can find high level pickup groups to do fun missions so often!

Last night in BAF, however, I noticed something odd that I hadn't noticed before:
When I would attack Nightstar or Siege, I would almost guaranteed take aggro and get "First Warning" within 5 seconds, regardless of my aggro status. Second warning would follow quickly, and I would back off to let my aggro drop. Then I'd get sequestered (happened 4 or 5 times in a row.)

Usually, when I'm playing the same character in the same BAF, the aggro would switch to someone else and I could wait for attention to drop from me and then head back into the battle. This wasn't working! I'm curious, though, as to WHY. Here are my best guesses:

1 - This is the first run of BAF I've had with both incarnate shifts and my alpha level shift, so I'm at 50(+3). Does higher level mean that much more aggro?
2 - Did something change in the last patch? I know there were some Lambda tweaks, but were there BAF tweaks as well?
3 - Could it be that we simply had a group that wasn't balanced the right way and it was causing us to do less damage and less aggro, so my aggro was "bullying" out the other players?

I'm built for DEF and TAUNT (I don't die very often at all, but it takes me FOREVER to kill anything, as I am NOT built for +Damage I did notice that it took MUCH longer to take out the two AVs (and as a group we did VERY poorly on locking down the rebel breakout: 18/20!) so maybe it was simply a low DPS group (everyone's switched to their alts to get their slots unlocked?)

What do you think? I'm not complaining, as I still really enjoy the game, but it confused me as to why this group was having so much more difficulty than I've seen in past groups.

Seriously, red side is so much more fun than blue side. If you think the writing is "bad" in this game then you need to go red more often!
  9. Well, with DC Universe live and Champions Online now FREE, I'd just like to say congratulations to NCSoft Northern California and the players for keeping CoH so vibrant!

I noticed, all weekend, that every single server was yellow/2 dots or red/3 dots with population, and it was fun not having any trouble whatsoever to get into a TF, with several people I'd never played with before, and no grief.

(I've heard complaints about this or that with reference to the weekly strike force, but honestly I think those people are just upset that the IP wasn't empty like zones have been in the past

Now, if an overall server performance boost could be done inline with I20, well, that would be awesome too! Keep it going for another 7 years!

  11. Hi!

Long time listener, first time caller : I have a proposal that I'd like to share.

Personally, I prefer red side to blue side because the contacts, missions, and, importantly, transit are just plain MUCH easier to live with. I'm playing blue-side recently, though, and I've noticed a few things:
    • Many of the contacts send you miles and miles away, for no apparent purpose. This pretty much never happens on red side and, honestly, it's freakin' annoying. Arriving in Skyway (from Peregrine Island) only to find that you're 0.9 miles away on the other side of the map and now have to run the whole distance (particularly if you don't have flight: Skyway isn't exactly friendly for super speeders!) is annoying. Having to go back to PI (fortunately you can usually bounch through ouro) only to be sent, then, to Perez Park? This sucks. Seriously. I'm level 48, can I leave Perez Park behind yet??????????
    • Many of the contacts have "street sweeping" missions (that I call "Kill X" because they're not interesting, they're just "kill X number of a specific mob in a specific location"). These are filler and completely un-necessary in a world with police radios and tips.

    Which brings me to this:

If we have tips and police radios, do we NEED the "Kill X" missions from each contact?

I propose that we eliminate all of those missions from old contacts. Simply go through all of the old contacts and remove any "Kill X" missions that aren't part of an arc. They don't serve any purpose but to annoy people who accidentally click on the wrong mission while talking to a contact. They are, by definition, grinding, and there's no reason for it.

What do you think? Is this a manageable proposition? This wouldn't stop anyone from DOING the grind, they just wouldn't get a mission bonus for it. You could handle that easily by putting a security chief in the zone (already is one for some zones) who does nothing but hand out grind missions. Cleans things up, makes the content more rich and exciting and removes that "NOT ANOTHER ONE!" feeling when you're playing.

I can't help but note that there's almost no Kill X missions in CoV and none at all (that I've found so far) in Praetoria, so it doesn't seem very far fetched to me!
  12. Add me as a "me too!" for the Malaise pants!
  13. I just received my 48, 51, 54, 57, 60, 63, and 66 month veteran's rewards. After 3 days idle.

Hmmm, I knew I was coming up on 48 and while I really enjoy the others, it seems like something may be going wrong here.....

I don't want to get attached to them if they'll be taken away, but I thought I'd bring it up just in case

Actually, the Canadian element was one of the desirable parts of that OTHER game.

But it didn't last. Sure, I'm Canadian, but I live in California now. I don't WANT snow any more

Or Molson Golden. That stuff's nasty! Gimme a Kieth's and I'll be happy though....

    Yes, and no.

No, puzzles with fixed responses don't work "well": this is how the midnight thing works (not that there's anything wrong with that) and so it's just a "click on a list of items." If you want to just get it done, then you can do so. (Note that for those who enjoy reading (I, personally, LOVE the text parts of CoX) you still might end up reading everything anyways

Yes, puzzles in online games work. How about this for a puzzle (knowing full well that you can't do this with architect, but that I always wanted a mission that WOULD do something like this) :

There are 8 options (switch to pull, button to push, door to open, whatever.) When you read a clue(*) you obtain information about which option to choose (maybe "it's a odd number" or "it's on the left, not on the right!") The option changes each time, though, so the clue won't be the same for two runs through the same puzzle. If you pick the WRONG option, then there is a negative consequence. If you pick the RIGHT option, you can complete the puzzle.

I wish there was more of this kind of thing in MMOs: I wish there was more thought required than "find glowie, click glowie, kill everything in sight". Yes, it's much harder to do this kind of thing WELL, and yes it's much harder to debug, to write new stories, etc. but I'm just saying that it CAN be done and I definitely WOULD enjoy it (though I don't really expect it.)

It does lead to an interesting point of MMO contention, though:

Other than top level raiding (hammi, lord recluse SF, etc. or any of the bazillion things in WoW, or....) MMOs are generally, well, REALLY easy. I enjoy playing CoX, don't get me wrong, but it's SOOOOO easy. I don't mean "I can kill anything at any time" easy, I mean "I don't feel ANY source of challenge-based frustration" when playing CoX. I RARELY feel like "damn, that made me really think about how to do it!" because, at a certain point, you have your character well defined, you have your power set built out, and you know what you can and cannot do. Once you identify, say, "hey, it's an EB longbow ballista" you know right away "yes I can beat that" or "no, I can't do that on my own" without any real "puzzle solving". Then, when you get the right people on your team (i.e. add a brute to help your corruptor) you go in and run right through with no hesitation. There's no real "difficulty", it's just "got enough DPS/defence? yes? no problemmo then".

Wouldn't it be cool if you could find a clue that would say "you can avoid the EB ballista in door number 1 and complete the mission directly in door number 2" that took some effort to find out, and then could use your brain to work through things?

I'm not demanding this for GR or anything, just thinking out loud
  17. OK, I generally read the Dev Digest (and pretty much nothing else: I'd rather play than talk about playing, but while I'm waiting for a build, I'll read to pass the time) but I wanted to post something after reading the Massively article.

I really really enjoy CoX. Well, CoV more than CoH, but that's not the point. I played CoH from shortly after release, through my first 50, and then took a break when all my friends went to WoW. I went with them, and I did the game with elves up to level max and tried a bit of raiding and I'm done with that. No more elves for me!

And then CoV came out, and I went back to CoX and I've been here ever since.

I tried Auto Assault for a bit but it didn't pull me in. (I LOVED the concept, HATED the steering. I want an NFS: Porsche Unleashed/Porsche 2000 feel to a car MMO. Hell, I just want that feel to any racing game: that game was the peak of driving games to me.)

I went to Champions OnLine, got the beta and played it and was hugely disappointed: sure it was prettier, sure the character (CoX character generator v1.5 as I like to call it: 1.5, NOT 2.0.) was cool, but that has NOTHING to do with game play/story/immersion! And with Champions, gameplay/story/immersion just left me feeling empty. I ebay'd my license once the game went live and came back to CoX.

I tried Fallen Earth and, well, that game looks freakin' cool. But you need to have friends in an MMO and my friends were happy with CoX, so back to CoX I came.

So, from my perspective it's obvious: CoX is what I want, and I think the devs have done an AWESOME job. But that doesn't mean it's perfect or that there's no room for improvement. So I just wanted to give a "THANK YOU" to the devs and give my impressions. Agree or disagree, I just wanted to share

    Technical:
    - The game's graphics are fine. I run at 1920x1200 with all the dials maxed out (and I'm sure I'll have to tweak that with the GR graphics enhancements) but it's a 6 year old game, what the heck did you expect?
    - The Mac client, well, it sucks. Not because of performance (about 85% of Windows in my experience) or because of stability (fine, never had a crash) but because the keyboard controls were all wrong and I can't bend my thumb that way. boo! Fine, though, because I'll just bootcamp into Vista64 and play there

    Art:
    - The fortune teller power (magic theme expansion pack) is freakin' beautiful. I love the graphics, I love the art, and I want more like that. Well, that's kind of the point I wanted to make: I really like most of the past 2 years' worth of art. I think perhaps the devs were taking advantage of increased computer performance, but I don't _care_ why: I just like it. This is echoed in things like the vanguard and most of the other new things added. Bravo!
    - Some of the old art, well, I wish that it was possible somehow to make hi-res versions of all the characters and replace the old ones. I know EQ did this with some VERY bad results, so perhaps instead of replacing the old ones, new ones could be added: make a new character model (female/male/huge/hi-res male kind of thing) and do it there or something: make a way for those of us with high end computers to USE the power.

    Nerfing
    - First, I don't play PvP. CoV has never really been a PvP stronghold (for various reasons) and I never minded. I go into PvP zones to get badges and nuklear missiles, and that's about it
    - I have ZERO tolerance for people who complain about "nerfing" in this game. CoV is one of the easiest games in the world to play. Really. It's easy enough that anyone who's complaining about nerfing is both a whiner and REALLY bad at the game.

    Zones
    - Why is it so annoying to get around in Paragon City? I haven't played my heroes for a while and loaded up and... well, it's so ridiculously easy to get around in the rogue isles that I almost NEVER use my mission teleporter power. In paragon city, well, it's kind of annoying. Why are there two unconnected subway systems??????
    - I really love how the zones work. people walk by talking about things that somehow are relevant, maps that look great and make sense.... awesome.

    Story
    - OK, this is why the game rocks: there's SO MUCH content! The game's so easy that you can really get into the stories without worrying about getting that last piece of fire resist to do molten core just the right way (WTF???? I though MMOs were GAMES not WORK!!!!) I love the stories, and I can see why people who aren't into the story might not enjoy things as much as I do, but, if that's the case, go play another game and have fun, why are you ******** about it here????
    - More, please Specifically, I want more CoV content. I know most people play CoH and not CoV, but CoV is more fun so I want more in CoV

OK, I think that's the main things I wanted to mention. I know this was almost zero content (I'm not trying to prepare an argument or a debate, I just wanted to speak up a bit as a voice of someone who's enjoying the game)

    Oh, one more.

    My one complaint:

    - Example: Why is the hero police radio "protect the bank from robbery" mission almost identical to the villain version? I know the villain version is AWESOME but the hero version... it just lacks something: like it was a "well, we gave this to the villains so we have to give something equivalent to the heros" and it was just given the bare minimum.... Wouldn't it be cooler if the villains robbed a bank and the hero "equivalent" was something hero-ish: like, invade a villain base or something like that? Assault the rogue isles and take out a villain base maybe? In other words, my main complaint about the game would be:

Why is it (almost 100%) "heros get one, villains get one" lineup when new changes are announced? Why not something that villains get and heroes don't get at all? Why isn't it something where villains get apples and heroes get oranges and you can't compare the two because they're so different? The black market's the same, the university's the same, the power prolifieration was right down the middle.... At least the epic archetypes are different, but there's only a modicum of difference for the patron powers. I LIKE it, hell, I LOOK FORWARD to it when content ISN'T UNIVERSAL. It makes it less repetitive when I'm bringing up a new character and I want to do that MORE!

To further that: I want to have missions that only blasters can do. arcs, contacts, the whole lot.

And similarly, missions/arcs/contacts for magic origin that aren't available to tech origin. This means i can play the game over and over again with less "repetitive" feeling. The patron arcs at the end of CoV are perfect examples: I chose different ones the first times through because I wanted to play the arcs, I didn't CARE about the powers (well, that much) that they came with

Anyways, have a good weekend everyone. Time to head home into the SoCal rush hour traffic
  18. Ex: I think you misunderstood Kohato.

I am on a Mac, I play in Windows, I want to play in Mac OS:

Can I download it from somewhere? Obviously i need a new download as the windows installer doesn't run so good in Mac OS

How will this affect people who have macs and already have accounts? (I dont have a Mac, I'm just wondering)

    [/ QUOTE ]

Your game account will work no matter which client you are using.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Could you clarify - if someone isn't interested in the goodies, will the Mac client be available for free to those who already have active accounts?

    [/ QUOTE ]

That is NOT what was said. The MAC Client will, just like the Good vs. Evil client, be a separate purchase. You need to purchase the MAC client to get the MAC client.

Without that, Transgaming wouldn't make any money and wouldn't have any reason to do/support the port

On the other hand, regardless of which client you USE, you can play the game: that's what the quote says: you can play using your existing account from any client (that you have purchased)

Now, from another perspective, I don't know that there will be any copy protection to prevent you from copying that Mac client to another computer, but I don't in any way advocate that. I just hope that it comes out at $19.99 or $29.99 TOPS and not $49.99: transgaming isn't writing any code for this, they're just wrapping the existing code in a Wine box, so there's no reason for this to cost so much! (Sorry Gav, but I just can't recommend people giving you money for nothing.)
