Discussion: Forum Migrations to vBulletin
Noooooooo! I hate change!
...it frightens me...
Will the "show all" or "all" feature still be available for threads in vBulletin? I really prefer it on long threads so I can just scroll down versus going through each page separately.
(I ask this mainly because another forum I was reading moved to vBulletin and the "show all" function was no longer there after the move.)
Other than that, yay!!
And, annoying "form you have submitted is no longer valid" will be gone!
Very cool. I like vBulletin forums a lot so I see this as a huge improvement.

And Lighthouse...? Can we NOT get the HUGE, GIGANTIC, ENORMOUS flash header that we have now? Can't we change it to something more in line with a forum? Something that's only maybe 200 px tall at most? Something that's NOT FLASH?
[/ QUOTE ]
The flash header is not planned to be re-used on the new vBulletin platform. We'll have more details on the "new" look as we get closer to deployment. The initial beta forums will be pretty plain-jane to start.

FYI, the "show all" feature is generally a huge lag inducer, especially on big threads. That's why it's generally disabled.
So, will the new forums allow us to post pictures and stuff like the guy did here? You'll have to scroll down a bit!
Hmpf, link wont go to the actual post, you will have to scroll down to see the photos.
And will we be able to put pictures in our Signatures too? You know.. big hulking sig pics that take up more space then the average post?

While I'm glad that the forums are (finally!) getting an upgrade, I'm not glad that it's to vBulliten. They should have gone with Invision Power Board instead.
[/ QUOTE ]
They did test IPB and phpBB as well, but they didn't have the features that NCNC felt they needed.
[/ QUOTE ]
We looked at a lot of stuff. The driving factor (among many) was the integration with vBulletin to our auth system and security. There was a lot more (and IPB is a great piece of software as well) but that was a pretty big deciding factor for us.

We'll get to talk over all that stuff once the beta vBulletin forums are up for people to poke at.

Hmmm...I was under the impression that the boards and site were running on the expression engine platform...
edit: nvm i seen the bottom "powered by UBB.threads"
which makes me ask is the site in EE? or just the Euro COH site? Just curious as im a web designer
Sweet news, I love vBulletin.
In my early teens, used to live on the Bid For Power forums, so it'll be nice to see that format again.

Curious how the name purge will happen - are we re-registering on the new boards, or will we have an option to change our name somewhere? I know admins can change VB names, but didn't think users could change their own names.
I would love to grab my global as my username - makes for far less confusion
[/ QUOTE ]
I believe it'll be that they'll just be dumping forum accounts that haven't logged in in over 3 years. Nothing you have to do.
[/ QUOTE ]
Right... but how do I change my name after the purge? They can't predict what I want my name change to be
[/ QUOTE ]
Good chance the purge will be before the migration - so you can just grab it while still on UBB here.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
Don't forget to grab all my posts the forum ate when you move to the new platform I suppose I'll eventually get over it though if they're all lost and gone forever
I seriously hope you retemplate it. The vbulletin templates putting gaps between each post are obnoxious. I also hope it tracks read/unread well. It's one thing UBB does that I've never seen any other forum software do even remotely as well.
As someone who's had to deal with the needless resource hog that is UBBThreads (aka WWWThreads) in the past, all I can say is congratulations on finally making the jump.
This should result in a much MUCH more usable forum for the community with a lot more speed.
Meanwhile, it will provide a much cleaner, simpler, and more bandwidth and systems resource friendly solution from your end.
This should lead to less need for periodic maintenance downtimes (as the board won't periodically drowning itself) and lower overall system utilization.
The worst UBBThreads of implementations I've converted over to something else (not vBulletin, but something quite similar) resulted in a 95% (yes, ninety five percent) drop in system resource utilization, an 80+% drop in number of (mostly useless) HTTP server threads spawned, and a nearly ten-fold increase in board responsiveness.
As such, I'm glad to hear this.
I don't think I've posted in a long while... so... now I have Don't delete me!

yay
these forums have been annoying to the point of me not poking around anymore and have only read, like, 2 threads in the past few days

I'm not a great fan of the vBulletin format (at least from the front end), but it looks like some sort of overhaul is indeed called for. Of course, I too would hardly mourn the flash animation at the top of the forum if it didn't survive the freezing process...
Anyway, Here's to a smooth re-launch!

vBulletin is *GREAT* forum software.
Smart choice.
Lighthouse,
Will there be any change to automatic forum titles? Will they be removed? What about personal titles that have broken the automatic progression?
Will post count still be tracked or will it be removed?
Be well, people of CoH.
Awesome!
can we start i13 beta now......?
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this announcement.
It's a strange feeling.
Cool I guess. We'll see how it all goes down.

[/ QUOTE ]
Everything will remain the same including titles, progression, and post counts.
That is, unless they purposely decide to change it (which they could have done any time while using UBB). But, barring a decision to change policy, the goal is to have the new software pick up exactly where the old left off. That's what all the conversion scripts are programmed to do.

Purging old, unnecessary threads

Ok, who decides what is "unnecessary"? What will be the guidelines for the pruning? I hope you keep a pristine backup so that you can fix deletions that turn out to be ill-advised.
