I was highly surprised they allow transfers to Freedom. If you have to lock out servers then that has to have been a mistake.

However on the plus side this must surely spell the end to all the "server merge" threads

I've played on Freedom nearly all weekend (discounting some uncomfortable downtime Friday evening). Other than the chat system going t!ts-up constantly, the zone latency was surprisingly good on Freedom, even in the crowded (read: PL) zones during the lockout periods.

That's another reason why I don't get why they specifically lowered the cap value on Freedom on Friday. If this weekend's cap was the "hard" cap and we hit it, and the lag wasn't bad at all, their kneejerk reaction on Friday just seems that much more like an overkill reaction.

To my surprise, there was little lag during double XP weekend. I enjoyed it immensely.

The only issue I had with this weekend was the constant dropping of Global Chats.

The Server Capping out wasn't an issue. I would just exit back to login and repat until I could access Freedom. It never took longer then 5 minutes and that was the maximum. I played at peak hours and days during this event as well.

Nice to see there this game is on the up and up. FRom a business perspective...this could earn the CoH Series even more resources since the game is thriving!

After reading through all of these post I see this alot! Now come on, think a second all of you who think they should give you "another" free double XP weekend. What in the world do you think would happen if they allow that? Your still going to get the same load problems, and guess what. You'll still be back on here whining about not being able to get in.

I do agree that they should have a wait que for those who want to wait to get in to Freedom for instances like this.

Precisely what we all knew would happen when hey announced server transfers...they should have locked those servers or put a limit to the number of toons an account could transfer to them...or something.

Yes. We upgraded our server hardware as part of our re-investment plan for City of Heroes/Villains, but the fact of the matter is that we've actually hit a new capacity threshhold.

Thanks to server transfers. Freedom already had the highest population which attracted even more players from other servers that felt they had less teaming and PVP options due to a player decline. This left Freedom and Virute over populated and the other servers even more underpopulated.

While some other servers did hit yellow over this DXP weekend, at least half stayed green which was previously unheard of during a DXP weekend before server transfers.

While I agree server transfers are good for the game it seems to me there are now too many servers with too little a game population. I don't know if less servers would help or not. If server capacity has been increased and the player population has decreased or even remained steady, fewer servers or server mergers may be the way to go giving Freedom and Virtue some much needed relief. The population on other servers would then be large enough to encourage players to stay there.

Players being locked out of their server during an event weekend should never have happened and is unfair to the paying customers who came out in droves to participate.

I'd volunteer to move away from Freedom... unfortunately, my main's character name is taken everywhere else, so you're all stuck with me taking up a little of your precious space... when I'm not playing on Virtue, Liberty, Justice, or Protector.

I see complaints about people being locked of their home server, one person even painting the vivid emotional picture of being locked out of his house. Here's the thing, though... its not your server. Having your 50 or all of your characters exclusively on a server does not give you more right to it than someone who is starting off there with a brand new character... or even a Johnny-come-lately who moved a character there because he wanted to be part of a larger population or whatever other reason. They're paying customers, too, just like you.

You chose a server and, in many people's cases, chose to play exclusively there. End of story. It just happens that the server you chose ends up being the most popular and populated. This is a classic example of the old lesson: don't put all your eggs in one basket.

So long double xp, lag fest, server locked, stress filled weekend.

While the xp that we got while we were in was nice, in several ways Im glad this is over.

I'm a Freedom Native, but my poor alt on infinity still saw so few teams that the double xp wasnt equal to the xp of a standard 8 man pug on freedom any day of the week.

I gotta say that even with double xp, those 30-46 lvls still suck.

PS: Please fix the global chat channel bugs we have fought with all weekend. They caused our sgs to really struggled to stay coordinated and run sg events. LARGE source of fustration, particularly for those stranded on dead servers who wanted to at least CHAT with the sg.

Well lets review,

Double Xp hits and the Devs start to think hey we might not be able to handle the load on the server lets put a cap on it. Then the removed the cap because people rightfully complained, then they snuck it back it on us from time to time. Sounds like it was handled professionly?? If performance was truly an issue why in the heck doesnt australia have its own server? Europe has its own server they could play there, they are alot closer! The thought of playing an online game with dial up or crappy DSL coming from the opposite side of the earth make me cringe. I say let the poofters play with the wankers!

Ok now that its over I will let some of the people who couldnt figure this out in on a simple idea....all weekend I logged out to switch toons on freedom...at worst i had to wait 2-3 min b4 logging back in(maybe twice this happened). All you do is switch back and fourth between your pw and server screen over and over...Not once was I left out for long periods..even durring peek hours. So ty devs for the double XP

I've been playing for over 3 years and only have 4 lvl 50s and part of 2 big SGs on two servers I team and chat with every night. One of them is the Art forum SG on Liberty and the other is Sapph's Silvermoon SG on Infinity.

You're correct, until the "snuck it back in", which isn't the case. A hard cap WAS implemented for all servers; what got us riled up massively on Friday evening was that, for Freedom ONLY, they opted to lower that cap even further.

What all of the Freedom naysayers are missing is that critical point. The decision to FURTHER lower the pop cap for Freedom on Friday night was a big mistake, as it locked out a good chunk of the populace. Once that cap was removed, there was still the hard cap to contend with, but at least that put Freedom on the same ground as Virtue and every other game server out there.

With Freedom relying on just the hard cap, yes, we locked semi-regularly for the rest of the weekend, but as most players have noted it wasn't anything a bit of "click a server, back up, click a server, etc". couldn't resolve after five or ten minutes. Sometimes it's worse, and that can't be helped. And other than the global chat system spazzing out regularly, gameplay was kept VERY playable from late Friday night onward, which just showed why the artificial cap was uncalled for.

We were having a hard enough time with it before they put in the artificial cap on Friday night. Removing that, and letting the natural cap take over, was the only viable way to manage a double XP weekend here without alienating the native populace.

I personally hope we never have a double XP weekend like the existing implementation again. All it does it bring the more populous servers to their knees in favor of the PLers (and hey, I'm one of them occasionally). A better, win-win way to approach this is with a "double XP temp power" that is good on your toon for X hours/days of gameplay. That way, the rush for PLing is more spread out, and regular players get to enjoy the benefits of the double XP without being shut out regularly.

A final thought, and I'm hoping this is the last post in this thread.

Most of the useful comments were during the first evening; playerbase makes a complaint, rednames comment and respond, a solution is implemented, and everything that can be done is done.

Continuing to use this thread as a "neener neener" on Freedom, or using this thread to decry other players wanting to come over to Freedom for normal gameplay, should end. One of the reasons I'm against double XP weekends in general is the tremendous amount of inane backlashes, from all sides of the table, in cases like this. In my opinion, most of the posts that continued beyond Friday in this thread have ventured into the absolute antithesis of community, which CoX players have always held as their strength.

It's for that reason, as well as the login strategy management of this "event", that I'll call double XP weekend a failure. Not because we couldn't get our pet projects all the XP we could muster, but because of how venemous and petty the majority of us became to do it.

I don't agree with this being something that isn't counted down in real time. Look at the Holiday Spirit awards. I've got some toons with them left from the December 05 award.

If they do something like this I would think it needs to be done with a real-time count down. You click it and it's good for 48 hours of real time from when you click it. The code is there from the holiday temp powers like the self rez and jet pack. This *would* give people a chance to schedule it in with work schedules or what not. Make it not stackable like when they gave freespecs, only one at a time. You don't use it, you lose it.
