The Great Consignment House Heist of May 9th

Wow. this sucks. Last night around 11:00 PM Central I was on with my brother and we were both browsing the consignment shops, and I'd just decided to go ahead and put middle-of-the road bids on the 8 or so Inventions I wanted most (which naturally are the ones everyone wants the most). My total bids were for about 10million influence, or about half of my total bankroll (and I do mean total, this being my only 50, and indeed only toon about 24). I remember saying the exact words "It's a lot of influence, but I'll only get sticker-shock if somehow all the buys come through at once - but that would never happen."

So, that being said, the first thing I want to know is what are these additional measure to ensure this doesn't happen again. It would also be interesting to know why they weren't implemented *before* this happens, but I certainly don't expect an answer to that. As you might imagine, my confidence in the safety and security of the data you maintain has taken something of a beating, and it would be nice to get a little more detail other than, "additional precautions are being taken".

Secondly, I'd like to see you back this statement up:

[ QUOTE ]
As a whole, this process should be to the benefit of the players. We hope it will rectify most of the consternation created over this problem.

[/ QUOTE ]

From what I can tell this f-up has a handful of big winners - those who now have dupes of costume recipes for instance - and big losers - those who had big bids or rare recipes up for sale, and a lot of people who didn't gain or lose anything of great value in that particular window.

I can see how the proposed resolution will be to the benefit of the big winners, since you've indicated you won't be un-duping those items (and I'm not proposing you should), but I fail to see how it will be of any "benefit" to me, unless you consider having my influence restored, but having the time spent on choosing the enhancements, levels, and bid amounts completely wasted a benefit.

[ QUOTE ]

I knew I was being an idiot to bid that much influence but I sort of did expect to either get my wings or eventually reclaim my money...

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think you were being an idiot unless you wouldn't have been happy had the buy come through. In fact it will be a sad day for CoH if the playerbase ever feels it's unwise to trust the CH servers with large amounts of influence or valueable recipes.

Thank you Lighthouse for the information. I have some intelligence for ya - see, it was my fault. I turned 28 yesterday and decided to go on an evil spree - I snuck in to WW when no one was looking and put a tiny piece of code into the WW transaction computers. All it was supposed to do is round off the integers and transfer the money to an annonymous account - it worked a tad too well, I must have misplaced a decimal point. I am always doing things like that! [Kudos to whoever gets the movie reference first ].

Seriously though, I appreciate the lowdown. I did turn 28 yesterday and odd things have a habit of happening on my B-Day - so I apologize for whatever odd technological demons I may have or may not have spawned by accident or on purpose

Superman 3 tho wasn't a decimal missplacement. it was the .5 of a cent that wasn't added in on the payrole checks. it was tallied all up into 1 lump some which he so gracefully collected =P

as for me, this sounds like a big mess and a lot of work for the ncsoft team to work on. i hope it is corrected as best as possible. i think i had around 100 IO salvage stored in the Consignment House. that would be a pitty to lose.

EDIT: adding a thought

what if we were given a rewards table that contained all our lost salvage and whatnot. when we logged in, it would pop up, and we could collect what we could carry. keep that up until it's all gone and we would have everything returned. a lot of code, i realize, but just a thought.

thx

They are testing stuff right now and it looks hopeful, but to say YES you will get all your stuff without knowing for sure is not likely. Lighthouse is hopeful, and ExLibris is hopeful, so I am hopeful.

But no one knows for sure.

Dude...he can restore your influence. There is absolutely no way he can restore your time. Don't you think you're being just a teensy bit unreasonable?

A wall of whining follows, as usual.

I had some goodies involved in this, and some bids also. I shrug my shoulders, and went and whupped on some CoT and Rikti for awhile. Y'know...I PTFG!

Sh*t happens, and life goes on. Ex, Light and the gang will do their best to make things right. If they can't, oh well, guess what? It's just a game. No one died. You aren't out on the street feeding your kids cat food.

If they can make things right, I hope all you righteously indignant complainers come back here and give them a hearty "thanks"...but I have my doubts you will.

I didn't ask Lighthouse to "restore my time" I was just calling him out on how this could possibly be of a net benefit to me. It's one thing to say this will be resolved in a way that will cause the least amount of pain, and I can appreciate that, and I suspect that that's what's actually going to happen... but that's not what Lighthouse said. He said
[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]
And I just don't see it. So I asked him what benefit I could possibly enjoy from this process, assuming that just having things restored to a close, but slightly worse state than I started out at isn't an actual "benefit"

Ummm... that's what I was doing, and then the FG lost prettt much every unit of influence I'd gained from PTFG through 50 levels. Could it be that the annoyance factor is somehow related to the percentage of overall wealth lost by this f-up? Nah, it must be that I'm a whiner and you're a lofty and courageous spirit who never becomes annoyed at the inconveniences, slights and unfairness of daily life. Yay for Hyperbole!

When I went to check Wentworth's after the shutdown, I found that I had some duped salvage, but I also may have been missing some recipes and salvage I had up for sale, I don't really keep track. It's really not a big deal. Even if I had lost some rare things up for millions of influence, I wouldn't make a fuss. While the auction server was down I went out and fought evil like usual and found that I had picked up two rare recipes before the server was even back up.

I hope people will get back what was lost, but I hope even more that players learn not to rely on the system to give them boatloads of influence.

Huh? I'm just relying on the software to keep track of the various numbers and bits of data assigned to my character. As are all of us. If we couldn't rely on that 99% of the time (and I admit that 99% of the time we can) then Cryptic/NCSoft would be out of business inside of two months.

....I smell a new history plaque being posted in front of Wentworth's and even a new story arc in the works....

Seriously, thanks for keeping us informed and working hard on the fixes.

I think I lucked out on this issue. I wasn't selling anything at the time except for Salvage and Recipes. At the time of the rollback I was bidding 7mil on Rocket Boots that I got some time later and was already on my toon... So when it rolled back twice, I got 14mil back due to my Bid being brought back.

But I believe I lost somewhere in the range of 50 million inf worth of items. I love I9, figured there was bound to be glitches....probly shouldnt have so many things listed on auction!!! But the auction house is like crack to me!! Im crossing my fingers to get my inf/items back so good luck devs. If you fail, you wont be getting any /petition from me or anything like that, but it will tick me off a bit.

I got an extra Rocket Boots recipe (and subsequently an 8M inf pay raise) out of the rollback.

Just saying sorry now does nothing but raise the ire of people who just want their stuff back.

But, that's how I see it............

[/ QUOTE ]

But apparently not doing so can raise the ire of people who didn't enjoy having their stuff go missing in the first place.

I understand that devs are people, and therefore fallible, but even though it's normal to expect the occasional screwups, it was still their screwup, and it would be only decent to at least say "We apologize for the inconvenience" to the people who invested real time, effort and money into getting those items.

It's nice to get an explanation of what happened and why, but the overall tone of the announcement regarding the fact the problem occured in the first place seemed to be "s*** happens, you should get used to it".

So yes, a simple "sorry for the trouble" in all that would have been a nice, or at least the professional thing to do.
