Any of the devs have previous MMORPG experience?

There are plenty of threads for game issues and performance. The devs are aware of the problems. Hijacking this thread isn't going to get anything solved any faster than otherwise would have happened -- but it will pretty much kill the on-topic discussion that was taking place.

i'm surprised to see so many devs playing WoW... aren't they the enemy?

<.<

... at GenCon (1995, I think?) I was by the NCSoft/Cryptic booth when the door to their private area opened, and i got a glimpse inside.

It was only for a few moments because somebody was just getting more flyers out of a box, but there was a couple of NCSoft booth workers in there on computers.

They were playing WoW.

Clearly the devs have a time machine! Use it to get us Issue 9 faster!

Dammit, I meant 2005.

Although, I was at GenCon 1995 too.

I get them mixed up some times.

I'm old.

Wow. That brings back some memories. I had forgotten that game even existed :P

I couldn't if I tried. I think to how much richer I'd be today if it wasn't for that game. I played it before it went to AOL, on GEnie it was $6 an hour, and I played a lot. I had some painful credit card bills.

At least one Dev had to have played 10six (mmofps/rts), that was geko's baby before he joined Cryptic.

I spent countless hours playing that. Just about failed high school due to it. Good days.

There was a nice warcraft mod for CS that some servers used to run. You chose orc, elf or something... I think it had 4-8 classes to choose from depending on the version. And then you gained xp for kills. And as you reached certain levels you gained new abilities. One had a stealth, one had a self-destruct grenade move. It was a bit of rpg-flavor to CS.

No, hours upon hours of playing EverQuest and PlanetSide did that (not to mention all those other games that I shouldn't mention, cause well these are the CoH forums). But then, I don't design the game, so you are safe!

[/ QUOTE ]
You played PlanetSide?!
And here I thought I was the only one who played that. Now I feel the urge to hop in my BFR and aid the Vanu on Markov to crush everyone.

[/ QUOTE ]*raises an eyebrow* Oh! Another Biffer lover, just great! Those things killed off PS... though if you ever need a VS gunner on Markov, I suppose I could re-up my sub.

Give me a gunning seat, any gunner seat and watch the body count rise.

Oh, EQ, WoW, CoX, Auto Assault (Working on my Terminator), Guild wars, a few korean free MMOs (All of which were a huge grind fest with no pay off, kinda like another MMO that I play.)
I also play a few MUDs, one of which has been around since the late 80's if I'm right, and it's run it's course, lucky if 10 players show up.

Also RetroMUD, think... can't put it in words really.

I know I played FFXI for like, 1 hour before screaming that my black mage couldn't kill a level 1 mob. I did play Lineage II, didn't stay around long enough, did like it though.

I still prefer WoW and AA over CoX, but the inventory system and such really helps... moving like a snail in WoW does not.

Alright, I think that's about it from me.

Oh, D2 as well, and nearly hated online games after that.

Know thine enemy. Plus inspite of being the root of all evil and injustice WoW has many positive experiences that I can understand any Dev wanting to sample so as to increase his/her own personal "gaming experience" palette.

[/ QUOTE ]
Especially the folks in the art and animation department(s). Eh?

I won't pay $20 + $40 expansion + $15/month subscription to play WoW as a game--one grind is enough, thank you. But here's the paradox: I'll waste hours and hours watching WoW videos and machinima on YouTube.

Because it's purrrty.

(With one exception: "You call that a cape?")

[/ QUOTE ]

Really? When I first played it I wanted to take a gun to whoever designed the male models. I have totally jacked friends, and NONE of them look like that. Those guys arms are frggin HUGEANTIC. Like, I can crush your face with my forearm hugeantic.

And also, I gotta say:

They ride in single file to hide their numbers.

(I think)

[/ QUOTE ]

Warlock player? And yes I dislike how the humans look in World of Warcraft too. Being an old school Everquest player, I dislike how just about all the World of Warcraft races look like.

The only races I can stand are:

1) Undead, my favorite race and the one I play.

2) Gnomes, I'd never play one but they are good for entertainment value. I laugh when I see them. Plus they were fun to punt.

3) Blood Elves I enjoy because they remind me of High Elves from Everquest. I am glad they are part of the Horde.

4) Dwarves I enjoy them too. Although some have the ugliest faces.

Races I hate:

1) The Tri-Horde on Kalimdor (People that Alpha Tested know what I mean by Tri-Horde). For those that don't, Trolls, Orcs, and Tauren. All of these races just look dumb and too primitive. Trolls look the stupidest in my opinion. I hate being allied with these guys. I would go insane if we didn't get Blood Elves.

2) Humans, reason mentioned by above poster.

3) Night Elves, just look at them, they scream noob or cyber for some reason.

Neutral Race

Draenei I haven't decided if I think they are cool or not.

[/ QUOTE ]Well, going backwards opens up new ideas.

I started playing EQ as my first graphical MMO, and when you compare EQ to WoW, EQ just looks so much better simply because the look is utilitarian and get the job done and not cartoony crud.

Plus having skills for spell types to reduce the chances of interruption is something needed.

Gah!!! I hear you there Castle. My pride and shame was the one month I ran up a $444 Compuserve bill. Never mind the phone bill for that month. Those games just sucked me in back then... and I have never turned back. I think my being a MMOholic has deep roots back in those early days.

Looks like Castle has the most on his list. I have a question. I'm an aging gamer that discovered MMOs, with the help of CoX. I'd like to get into them more, but how in the world does someone with family, a busy career, and other hobbies find the time to check out all these great MMO's? Or get a representative from each archetype in CoX up to level 50 before retirement?

I'm not having any problems, and I don't know anyone who is. Just because it's a big issue to You, doesn't mean it's everyone elses only priority and the dev team should drop everything to focus on it. Either have some patience, or upgrade your own equipment. I have 3 different computers running the game, no crashes on any of them.

[/ QUOTE ]

There could be no issue any larger for someone than crashing because that means not playing. That is bigger than any other bug.

Some people are crashing a lot. Some are crashing more than they used to (I am up to 1 a night from 1 month or less). I am running at 2 GB RAM, on dual 3 GHz P4s yadda yadda yadda.

Be glad you are not experiencing trouble. don't dump on those less fortunate. I am just glad it is about once a night which I can reduce by remembering to turn off my antivirus.

[/ QUOTE ]

I crashed multiple times last night along with most of the other other people on the continuously rebuilt with new people team. We'd save spots for a few minutes, some would come back and we'd reinv and some were just like "screw this" and logged. I think it's a bigger problems than capes. I did notice something though that seemed to make the problem happen more for me. Some missions we'd go into would drop your toggles upon entering them. I'm talking about even turning off your sprint type toggles. Whenever I went into these missions where I had to turn on my toggles again upon entering the missions I and everyone else on the team crashed more. Then of course we'd exit the mission and start heading to the next mission we'd have people crash while traveling so.. I don't know what the exact recipe is to crash but obviously the people supposedly working to fix it don't know either. Hopefully this patch on test clears up the problem. I'm just a bit annoyed it's taken two months to hopefully fix and it's sort have been treated like a hush hush things with the devs. Reminds me of when someone was able to get admin rights or whatever and logon as a redname in game and reset the servers. Cryptics response pretty much didn't even respond to what actually was happened but more or less was like "No one's information(other than their own obviously) was breeched". Was all done not really addressing what happened because I guess no one likes bad reality PR like hackers getting into the game or constant game crashes... Here we get a simple tiny patch note that gives us a hint at a fix to a major problem but we have a more elaborate one about a snipe animation... Hate to be a threadjacker, but sometimes you need to do it to remove the blinders from the horses.

An example of Constructive Feedback

I'm sure making a few sentences in a thread won't negatively impact a dev's schedule. But that's not the topic of the thread anyhow.

If you really have constructive feedback about issues, create a new thread regarding stability issues; don't hijack this light-hearted conversation on past MMO experiences.

Tact also helps if you want to get a point across without coming across like a forum troll. No insult intended, just friendly feedback.

In any case, this isn't the thread to air your grievances with the game. However, If you've played other MMOs and want to share your experiences, please feel free to post in this thread.

Peace

??? I don't think Air Warrior was ever on CompuServe. That was the GEnie network.

Oh dear, Castle played AW a bunch? That means Castle probably shot me down at least once. In fact, anyone who played AW for more than a few hours for either B or C land has most likely shot me down. I died an awful lot, but A-Land would never be smaller when I logged off than when I logged on!

Shrugs. When you have so many people complaining and little response from the devs about problems affecting MANY(see the many many threads about the issues plus the unanswered PMs) then you gotta do what you gotta do. If the devs can't give answers or at LEAST some progress update to serious problems affecting the game and the paying players but are quick to take part in idle chit chat than there are much more serious problems at Cryptic's CoX department that need to be addressed than bugs...

I know. I played Horizons myself for about a month or so before I cancelled. It's a shame the game was so horribly busted, as it really had a lot of potential. (Especially with Dragons)
