Any of the devs have previous MMORPG experience?

All this nostalgia, I just have to ask. Does anyone else remember Dawn?

The MMO-killer that never was. At least Horizons *did* go live.. for awhile... *ducks and hides*

Yes, the game where the Dev/Designer dared to suggest that if your character DIED in PvP combat, it could not be resurrected again in the game. A maddening concept that may have sounded good on paper, but the gaming public would never grasp the consequence in any number. The game never left Alpha-stage, if it even got that far.

Anyone know if any of the developers or community managers played MMORPGs before City of Heroes/Villains? Like maybe some of them played Everquest or Ultima Online back in the day.

[/ QUOTE ]

I sincerely hope not.

There are plenty of threads for game issues and performance. The devs are aware of the problems. Hijacking this thread isn't going to get anything solved any faster than otherwise would have happened -- but it will pretty much kill the on-topic discussion that was taking place.

[/ QUOTE ]

Kill the on-topic discussion, which is off topic for this forum ???

Didn't know thread-jacking was looked down upon around here ... Considering it happens EVERY THREAD. Or is it only ok to thread-jack certain threads ...

I happen to think that game stability is much more on-topic, relavent, and a few thousand times more important, than drooling over the possibility that someone might have been playing the same game (and getting down right stimulated over the possibility they played on the same server) as a ... DEV did years ago.

They pull their pants up one leg at a time and they do in fact have smelly poop ... Just like everyone else.

I'm not having any problems, and I don't know anyone who is. Just because it's a big issue to You, doesn't mean it's everyone elses only priority and the dev team should drop everything to focus on it. Either have some patience, or upgrade your own equipment. I have 3 different computers running the game, no crashes on any of them.

[/ QUOTE ]

There could be no issue any larger for someone than crashing because that means not playing. That is bigger than any other bug.

Some people are crashing a lot. Some are crashing more than they used to (I am up to 1 a night from 1 month or less). I am running at 2 GB RAM, on dual 3 GHz P4s yadda yadda yadda.

Be glad you are not experiencing trouble. don't dump on those less fortunate. I am just glad it is about once a night which I can reduce by remembering to turn off my antivirus.

[/ QUOTE ]

I crashed multiple times last night along with most of the other other people on the continuously rebuilt with new people team. We'd save spots for a few minutes, some would come back and we'd reinv and some were just like "screw this" and logged. I think it's a bigger problems than capes. I did notice something though that seemed to make the problem happen more for me. Some missions we'd go into would drop your toggles upon entering them. I'm talking about even turning off your sprint type toggles. Whenever I went into these missions where I had to turn on my toggles again upon entering the missions I and everyone else on the team crashed more. Then of course we'd exit the mission and start heading to the next mission we'd have people crash while traveling so.. I don't know what the exact recipe is to crash but obviously the people supposedly working to fix it don't know either. Hopefully this patch on test clears up the problem. I'm just a bit annoyed it's taken two months to hopefully fix and it's sort have been treated like a hush hush things with the devs. Reminds me of when someone was able to get admin rights or whatever and logon as a redname in game and reset the servers. Cryptics response pretty much didn't even respond to what actually was happened but more or less was like "No one's information(other than their own obviously) was breeched". Was all done not really addressing what happened because I guess no one likes bad reality PR like hackers getting into the game or constant game crashes... Here we get a simple tiny patch note that gives us a hint at a fix to a major problem but we have a more elaborate one about a snipe animation... Hate to be a threadjacker, but sometimes you need to do it to remove the blinders from the horses.

An example of Constructive Feedback

I'm sure making a few sentences in a thread won't negatively impact a dev's schedule. But that's not the topic of the thread anyhow.

If you really have constructive feedback about issues, create a new thread regarding stability issues; don't hijack this light-hearted conversation on past MMO experiences.

Tact also helps if you want to get a point across without coming across like a forum troll. No insult intended, just friendly feedback.

In any case, this isn't the thread to air your grievances with the game. However, If you've played other MMOs and want to share your experiences, please feel free to post in this thread.

Peace

Spud.

I'm going to say this once, and I'm going to say it as nicely as I can.

Chill out.

This isn't off topic - nor is it quite on topic - it's an inbetweener (as are many of our topics). Our devs are, quite obviously, CoH-related - on the other hand, other MMOs aren't.

However; you may have noticed the following things:

A) General is under the "For Fun" heading.

B) There is a very specific Technical Issues forum.

C) This was a fun thread - in fact it still can be.

D) Finally - Yes, it is in fact only OK to jack certain threads. If you jack a whiny "i'm leaving *insert randomness here*" thread to make something fun out of it - then more power to you. If you jack a fun thread like this so you can start griping about something that can be griped about in a more effective place - that's bad.

There's more to it than all that, but I'll sum it up real simple like:

This section of the boards is intended to be at least to some degree /fun/ - rather than for major, serious, heavy duty discussions. It doesn't always stay fun - but for the love of all that is semi-holy when you see people getting along and having a *gasp* GOOD TIME - don't rain on their parade because you just have to be Mr. Black Raincloud, ok?

As for your problem - I haven't crashed more than 5 times since CoV came out. I'm not kidding you. The thing that made the difference for me? New memory. I don't know why, but ever since I haven't crashed hardly at all in CoH. Mapserving too is really low except on rare occassions. So it may not hurt to check your own end as well.

Now then...

Back to our regularly scheduled fun things.

I thought so too ... I LIKE OT posting and have engaged in it many times myself ... But ... I've been mod'd quite a few times lately, for being off the "City of Heroes" Topic.

Just thought that since the guy who deleted my threads and other posts, for being not related to City of Heroes, had posted in this off-topic thread ... Well ... I bet you can guess the rest of that.

And as for thread-jacking ... It would be easier to count the threads that do not get jacked, than the ones that do ... It's not limited to "I'm Leaving" threads, it's more or less all threads. So people asking that this thread not get jacked, when every other thread is ... Riiiiight. I just wanted to point out to them that all threads get jacked around here.

As for chilling out ???

I actually like cake ... Pie sucks, except for Chocolate Pie.

Chocolate Pie > Cake > Pie

Oh and

Cold Pizza > Hot Pizza

Just thought I'd take this opportunity to remind people that just telling people to stop whining cause their problems aren't real, when there is no more real problem than NOT being able to play the game we all love the most (speaking of on-topic) ... And to stop thread-jacking OT threads ... Is hypocritical.

I just have a really minor problem with Double Standards ... They never seem to get applied evenly.

It's SOOO nice to see so many of the devs played the MMO I cut my teeth on, Asheron's Call (1, not 2, didn't like 2 as much). Sometimes I miss that game and ALMOST want to reactivate my acct to see how it's changed, but I just can't seem to pull myself away from "the City" long enough

I think my first MMO was Microsoft Hearts.

Well, at least one of the devs claimed Earth and Beyond experience. Hi, War Witch!

E&B was one of the most ambitious games ever from a story perspective, and I've always felt it was a great loss to the MMO industry that EA's purchase of Westwood turned out to be the death knell of that game instead of its rescue.

One of the reasons I played CoH faithfully the first year or so was the fact that the meta-story was progressing and it looked like there would be constantly evolving story content. (Calvin Scott task force as an example.) My first break from CoH occurred around the time that I realized that the "story" was becoming less important and that the game was becoming somewhat static. I'm hoping that the promise of I9, that we begin an over-arching multi-issue storyline, comes true and that we get a chance to feel like we're actually part of something other than a single story that gets played out from the point of view of whatever alt you happen to be playing.

Besides, the Tada-O corporation was a laugh a minute. Valentine's heart-shaped ship shields, FTW! With inventions coming, we really need a cheap cut-rate supplier of amusing less-than-super inventions around to help supply Paragon City with useless yet fun super hero gear.

Air Warrior! Dear lord, the amount of time and $$$ I sank into that game. I could play at 300bps for $6 an hour or 1200bps for $12.99 an hour back on Compuserve, then had to cover the phone bill on top of that. Between IoK and AW, I had some huge Compuserve bills.

[/ QUOTE ]*dons his thinking cap* So, let me assume the role of Statesman for just a brief moment, it is going to be done as a joke mind you.

Statesman: "We the developers at Cryptic love City of Heroes and City of Villians so much that we must conitnually develop it further and never play it from the player perspective... we have other MMOs for that!"

I chose Statesman because I originally though he was like, late 20's until I saw an interview of him on a game review site before I3 hit and was shocked at how old he looked.

Don't question my bizzare logic, it will only intensify and make you crazed.
