Statesman Speaks at Origins

For years, I was anti-stamina and anti-hasten (I still don't see ANY instances where Hasten is "needed". Ever), but recently, I've begun to see how some genuinely need Stamina.

[/ QUOTE ]

You've been anti-Stamina and anti-Hasten for years now? In a game that's only been out about 14 months?

Here's how I read the OP:

Statesman clearly doesn't like the idea that people just go to the store every few levels and buy all their enhancements. He wants us to use our drops more instead of just running to Talos to sell after every mission. I see the stores leaving, the Power 10 concept being removed, drops of all kinds increasing, and new contact stores like the level 30s have for level 10s and 20s being implemented.

The Desperation idea sounds okay in theory, but I'd hate to be a defender teaming with the kind of blaster that yells at them for healing them when they want to do "mad phat damage" and then yells at them for letting them die when the blaster takes too much heat.

As someone who sent Statesman a whole list of possible uses for the University that weren't skills-based, I am prepared to gloat if any of them are implemented.

Thanks for the Notes Butler! Some interesting stuff there, but like many of the other posters, I don't understand the hate towards the NPC shops. They serve a purpose and they work pretty well to me.

A couple of other points from Statesman's Lecture/Q&A at Origins...

1) Concerning the ability to change the color of the effects of your powers, Jack immediatly had this one word answer "Soon". Said farily emphatically.

2) Jack thinks that the Defender AT is working exactly as he wants it to in the context of the game. The impression I got was the other AT's have it too easy in the higher level end of the game though. But I would not expect Defenders to be altered at all.

3) I liked his comment concerning Ghost Falcon: I would replace him with a chalk outline. It isn't that Jack doesn't like stores, he just doesn't like the fact everyone can get the same things at them. If he had to do it all over agin, he would have left all enhancements available thru contacts only, with only certain ones being available thru certain contacts. And not just one kind of origin type, but I got the impression maybe only certain types (like maybe enhanced damage, but no enhanced accuracy).

4) Jack will have less time to think about the game....say in about 7-8 months...

Gah! Are you saying that there will soon be a Statesboy/girl?

It's like I've said before...

Stamina is like a Porsche. You certainly don't need one, but darned if it doesen't look nice in the garage.

[/ QUOTE ]
I would say Stamina (and Hasten for that matter) are more like a car, period. You could get around without one (walk, take the bus, or ride a bike), and depending on your situation, you can do very well, but having one lets you spend your time much more efficiently and worry about things other than "How do I get where I'm going?"

Sounds vaguely like other comments States has made, most recently at GenCon -- where he's alluded to his belief that higher-end enhancements (read: SOs) are substantially more widely available than originally intended.

What really are the alternatives for players?

1) Increased dependence on drops
2) Increased trading -- anyone remember early Request?
3) Greater reliance on Contacts for enhancements, consistent with general trends towards encouraging storyarc- and mission-oriented play.

Reason everyone goes and buys'em though is that you never get the right ones.

You end up at the end of a level 39 mission with 3 L36 DO's, one SO -probably a runspeed or defense-debuff of whatever you're not (WHY do freakshow drop mutations and occasionally magic? why do crey drop magic also? why does EVEYRONE DROP BLOODY MAGIC?), and a whole bunch of trainings, most of which you dumped to make room...

At the same time though, enemies are scaled to the assumption that you've got 6 SO's [or 6HO's starting at 40] in everything.

So we'd need the drops to change, or the villains to change, otherwise we're in trouble if we can't buy what we need.

That sounds like an idea I threw out a while ago. At level 12+ and level 22+ you don't get TOs and DOs anymore, but the level of drops is about 1/2 less.

The other thing I mentioned is that if you run into a mob that drops Magic/Natural and you happen to be magic, you *only* ever get magic drops.

The other idea I had, had to do with tweaking the types of drops (damage/accuracy/recharge/mezzing/resistance-defense/debuffing) by AT.

So, for instance, Blasters get a lot of damage/accuracy drops, minor mezzing and debuffing.

Defenders are pretty much everything (while including healing.)

Just some ideas.

Still here, even after all this time!

This is just going to encourage people to play some origins over others (to an even greater degree.)

With the way Vhaz are already, and only getting DOs from them, the contacts that send you off to hunt Vhaz are going to be very unpopular.

I hadn't even thought about that.
having to rely on drops for enhancements would be annoying.
never mind having to seek out certain factions for DO's and SO's.

lets see:
Natural- Crey, Family,
Magic - CoT, Banished Pantheon,
Mutation - DE, Lost,
Science - Council, Rikti, Vahz
Technology - Sky Raiders, Nemesis, Freakshow, Clockwork, Malta,

I'm probably wrong on some of these but still, you get the idea.

and I thought I hated the Circle of thorns before ...

He's getting rid of the Talos stores? Can he also get rid of training enchancement drops post level 20!?

[/ QUOTE ]

Great Idea!

[/ QUOTE ]

If we're supposed to buy everything from contacts at this level, it's going to screw with regular teaming, as people will find themselves relatively unable to unlock their enhancements unless they're very careful. I don't think it'll be a major problem, but I'm not sure it's a good idea.

They only avoid them because the shadow shard is so poorly designed, I mean really there is no reason to go there unless you're a tourist or want to do insanely long task forces.

[/ QUOTE ]

Also, people avoid the tougher villains when easier villains are available.
