I join a villain PUG. This was a low level team around level 10. The mission owner had their rep jacked to the max so everything was red or purple to most of us. So I made the suggestion that one of the corrupter should pull. So the fire/rad guy says ok he will pull. Guess what this guy uses to pull with? FIREBALL!!! I am like omg why would you pull with an aoe? The team ended up wiping. When we all got back from the hospital I pulled this time. Everything went well after that. I soon left after this mission was over. Anyone else care to share some crazy noob stories?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually, in some circumstances, Fire Ball is excellent for pulling.

It's a very fast animation, not very high damage (it has a lower BI than Flares), and repops quite quickly.

Why pull with an AoE? Pulling a single target often leads to a trickle of aggro. Mobs come at you one at a time. Sometimes that's preferable. But to take maximal advantage of AoEs, you want a group that's relatively tightly grouped. Using a fast AoE like Fire Ball allows you to pull an entire group together, tightly.

If the point of pulling isn't to reduce the number of enemies in a group -- but instead, to pull one group away from potential chain aggro, and you can survive a full spawn, AoE pulling can often be preferable.

I'll grant that in the OP's example -- L10 probably precludes the survivability criterion. But AoE pulling is perfectly survivable, given good teamwork, and skillful use of LoS.

We should also remember that all bugs are not created equal. Certain kinds of costume bugs can be fixed in a few minutes. It's obvious what's wrong and it's obvious what to do and it's obvious whether it's fixed.

Fixing something like server stability is much more difficult. These kinds of bugs are often impossible to reproduce on the testing platform, because they're caused by heavy load or weird combinations of powers or characters left in an odd state (like "I teamed with a Kheld four hours ago").

    [/ QUOTE ]

Consider the converse of this problem.

A bug underlying the costume editor may be troublesome, but may be more easily worked around than the kinds of bugs and problems that persistently plague the PvP game.

I'd go so far as to argue that the kinds of bugs and problems in game systems like the costume editor or badge systems are largely quality-of-life.

Whereas the problems currently being experienced by the PvP playerbase are simply more substantial -- to the point of game-breaking.

I don't refute the point that the resources that fixes to PvP demand may outscale the resources demanded by other kinds of game fixes -- but no small reason for that is the fact that the underlying problems are themselves more substantive.

Interesting. But is this documented anywhere where most players can find it? If not, how did you discover this cool feature?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Being a little bit of a butterfinger, it's not uncommon for me to accidentally toggle off components of my UI. It's how I learned T is for Target, N is for Navigation and C is for Chat in the Keymap.

Once inside the base editor, it just seemed reasonable to give it a try. If I'm not mistaken there's a Keymap guide in the manual (granted, one of those bits perhaps many people gloss over), as well as explicitly viewable in-game in the Kemapping options.

Well, the thing is, going by the forums, it wasn't exactly a misunderstanding. Or did I just hallucinate all those people saying they shouldn't have to give up influence for prestige, or complaining about being prestige batteries for insensitive SGs?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, it's more a point of historicism.

We know what we've been saying since I6; and we have explicit indications that the Devs have been paying attention to those points. Otherwise, States and Posi wouldn't be so quite so willing to admit the unfortunate miscalculations in their implementation of Bases.

The natural response is why haven't they been getting fixed already? To which I'd argue that there have been clear priorities for content: L40+ Villainside content in I7, and now Scanner/Safeguards for Heroside in I8.

The base editor isn't really that complicated, once you understand power and control and what sort of things you need.

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's really not that complicated to fly a 747 or install linux either, if you already have that knowledge. My point is, for the casual player, =obtaining= that knowledge is a barrier.

On the topic of using bases, yes, I use mine (although I don't edit anything, I'm just a user). I dump all salvage I get so the base dude can craft whatever he needs to. And I use the teleporters because they're convenient.

But if it were to disappear, I wouldn't really miss it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'd add to that, I never felt particular intimidated by the Base Editor. Getting acquainted with the basic interface never felt particularly difficult.

Add to that the fact that the Editor inherently refunds all "mistakes".

I will readily defer that the stability and reliability of the Editor, and other anomalies of Prestige seem to make a great many players very cautious when it comes to base construction.

I will grant that the Base Boards see many players confused or frustrated by the Base Editor -- but I'll offer that it's not the inherent fault of the fundamental design of the Base Editor.
  8. 1) It's unfortunate that the OP, and the rest of the thread largely focuses on Jack's discussion of bases. There's a thread on the Base boards that preceeds this one by a matter of hours on the subject. My comments to that effect are there.

    2) The bulk of the speech (at least as reported by Gamasutra) is more about how MMO developers can, and sometimes can't engineer social behaviors among their respective playerbases. Bases are one aspect of that point from CoX.

    3) Are bases a failure? They were designed for the long-haul. Even a year after their implementation, the SGs that I'm familiar with that have been the most dedicated towards Prestige acquisition are just now approaching the 50M mark. The most expensive plot off the top of my head costs 136M. Rent mechanics (and their impending changes) notwithstanding -- these SGs are looking to max out their

    4) Despite the fact that I do agree that base costs, Rent and Prestige acquisition could probably stand Dev attention, there are two major points I've been making in the last year as important qualifiers to that opinion:

    a) Too many of the arguments I've seen regarding base costs overly rely on top-end costs as evidence. I would argue that these items were scaled to account for the possibility (even though it seems the vast majority of the playerbase doesn't engage in these behaviors) that a single SG could potentially fill its roster with 75 very active, different player-members.

    b) As a corollary, the playerbase has largely not taken advantage of this possibility. It seems even the most popular SGs I'm familiar with at most field two-to-three dozen different active player members, with perhaps a few more less-active player members. Instead, it seems many (if not most) SGs prefer to leave room to swap alts in and out. It further seems that two-to-three dozen different player members is about as large as many, if not most SGs can reasonably sustain.
  9. We had two Emp Defenders, seventy-five Prestige, five Presents left over from the last Christmas event, a Jump Pack half-full of Time Remaining, and a whole multi-colored collection of Lucks, Sturdies, Insights, Ranges... Also, a Ribosome, a Microfilament, a Nucleolus, a L52 Endoplasm, and two dozen Lysosomes. Not that we needed all that for the Quarterfield TF, but once you get into a serious powergaming SG, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the AR Blaster. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of a Trip Mine binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

    COP questions

Don't worry about it too much, Athyna.

If this thread, and the several others about Cathedral are any indication -- there's still a very large portion of the playerbase that's still asking what to some may seem basic essential questions.

It doesn't seem particularly safe to presume that everyone's on the same page concerning Cathedral (especially since it's relatively new to Live and complex).

Cuppa, as ugly as all this gets from time to time, it remains first-and-foremost, a community. That community is easily the biggest reason I stick with this game.

And that community is almost entirely attributable to you and your tireless work. Not only will we miss you, we'll miss the sense the humor, diligence and even-handedness with which you've kept this community held together for the past two years.

I'd wish you luck in your future endeavors, but I know I don't need to; you'll be just great.

Considering that roughly >90% of the zone is right up the [censored] of a Giant Monster -- the various rock formations are the only really remotely safe areas in the whole zone.
  17. Since this is a newer thread than t'other one -- I might as well voice it here.

I'm guessing that the design of the Heroes' beacon network was intended to address one of the most common complaints about the relative unpopularity of the Hazard zones: their relative inaccessibility.

The problem being that it's not the only problem underlying those zones' unpopularity -- see the new Shard transit network for further evidence of that problem. In contrast to redesigning spawn nodes or map geometry -- it is one of the quickest and easiest ways to address that problem.

    Two cents and all that.
