Support Arena Fixes

Many PvPers are already well aware that PvP is a secondary concern in CoH / CoV, and Lighthouse's recent post made that abundantly clear.

However, I wanted to bring the general community up to speed on something every PvPer has wanted fixed since issue 4: arena bugs. There are many bugs that I won't list here (because they are numerous), but the key ones are:

* Frequent arena crashes - dumping participants out of match, sometimes disconnecting players from the game
* Listing of nonexistent system tournaments that can be joined but never started. New players often join these things never realizing that they have never been implemented.
* The lack of an arena match invite button that works. Currently, you must either list a match and join it or use the /ai command. The invite button in the interface does not work.

These aren't quality of life issues. These aren't a clipping problem with a graphic or a text mistake, but bugs. Honest to goodness bugs that haven't been fixed in three issues.

I realize that developer time is scarce and need to be prioritized. I also acknowledge that PvE matters will take precedence. But I do think there is an obvious inequity when a bugged badge or costume adjustment takes precedent over bugs that are, at least to a significant minority of the population, of high importance and extreme in their effect.

Further, in issue 8, arena terminals will be given broader exposure since they will now be available in Pocket D. I am dismayed that the first exposure that many players will have with PvP is that the interface is difficult to use, bugged and matches are unstable. I don't just ask for these fixes for the hardcore PvP crowd, but also for the general playing population since it seems that the devs want to broaden their use.

Thank you for your time.

I'd like to add an even more serious bug to that list: sometimes when loading an arena map (as either participant or observer) you can actually be loaded into other players' mission maps.

During an arena competition held on the Justice server recently, that bug happened twice to my knowledge. It happened to one of my characters while observing a duel and later was reported by two characters who were starting a duel. My level 50 hero ended up in a villain-side newspaper mission entrance right next to two lower level player villains. They registered as enemies and thus could attack and be attacked by me (though all involved were civil about it). I asked them for all the pertinent mission details and filed a bug report prior to trying the exit door, but a griefer might have behaved very differently.

I'd really like to see new features added to the arena like being able to select a specific map for a battle, but making the whole experience a bit more stable first is a good start.

Agreed. The Arena really needs fixing, even if nothing else in PvP gets looked at anytime soon.

along the same lines add some new maps and maybe a few more options, like having npcs in the match or resetting all powers upon defeat.

maybe some arena games with some way of earning prestige or something of value in the match.

make betting on arena work.

Hell, just giving the ability to choose which map you want to fight on would be nice...

Very /signed indeed. It's depressing that bugs from Issue 4 are still present.

Wait a second... the arena building has an inside? Does anyone else know about this?

These bugs are among the reasons that PvP never really took off in my opinion. Its a shame that they put so much effort into producing the arenas and then didn't get them properly working. Fixing these bugs and adding a feature to allow us to choose the arena map we want to use would make it a lot more palatable.

I've been in there once... in May of '05. 'Twas nice. Nothing to keep me coming back though.

I have used the areana only twice. Once during the Cuppa-thon, where it was a bit buggy. >.< The second time was to help someone out on test see how their build fared at overcomming an Ice Tankers defence.

I might go to the areana more, especially with my more PvP built characters, if they weren't always so empty, or filled with smack talking jerks. The bugs don't help it at all either.

The only time I've ever been in an arena match, the final score was 7-2-1 in my favor. I was using an Archery blaster. If that's not a bug, I don't know what is.

I'd started a long rant about my disappointment with the direction PvP took -- we started out with the potential for focused, goal-oriented, instanced PvP, and instead went to free-for-all zone PvP, which in retrospect looks like a colossal waste of time and resources -- but instead I'll simply say that bugfixes are a good thing and ongoing bugs, even minor ones, are pebbles in the shoes.

So, yeah, stomping bugs should be a high priority.

I've always wanted to try an Arena match. Never gotten to.

This is not a reply to anyone in particular, but just an extended comment to my original post...

I'm not asking for this fix because I like PvP (though I do). I also respect people who don't like PvP and who like the other metagames in this game (badges, bases, costumes, etc.) more. I'm asking for support on these fixes because I believe they are better for the game as a whole.

Bugs, especially ones this extreme, shouldn't be tolerated in any part of the game. Those that know me in game know I don't like badges, but I will support fixes to those that allow friends of mine to enjoy that aspect of that game more. Same with any part of this game.

All I'm asking for is that this part of the game, which can be voluntarily accessed by anyone in the game, be fixed. This should be an issue you can support irregardless of how you feel about PvP since even though you may personally dislike it, there are others that you know that do.

I agree , the arena has been messed up for along time now.

Kingdom Hearts (1) & (2) let's you fight NPC's in the arena and gives away prizes . I'd like to see something like that added one day .

Yeah, there are blatant bugs that really need some dev love.

I agree with your desire to have overall arena functionality fixed. The arenas are a very visible aspect of this game and it would justify all the effort our Devs put into them if they worked better in general.

Although I have PvP'd in this game and had some fun with it, I would probably describe myself more a badger than a PvPer. Despite that I could see arena bug fixes helping even badgers in the long run. Currently AFK arena badging is widely used by the badging community to farm top level epic healing badges. It's arguably just about the only way anyone can hope to earn Empath without spending about 10 years playing the game normally. If the arena bugs that allow this farming to happen were finally fixed, the Devs would be forced to address how stupidly high the requirement for Empath is now and lower it to a reasonably obtainable level of say a year or two of normal play. As long as arena bugs like this are allowed to continue they adversely affect badgers as well as PvPers.

to bad they dont have the same respect for people that do enjoy the pvp in this game, they will take every chance they get to bash it in any post about pvp.

I did want to comment on the issue of the relatively speedy change to costume issues versus server code issues like arena stability. Please keep in mind that the development folks who do the art are different people from the folks who do client/server code. So, while I don't want to diminish your point, I do want to point out that not doing the costume things wouldn't help speed up addressing arena issues.

I hate to say it, but that type of behaviour isnt limited to the anti PvP crowd. Jerks on both sides of the fence.

Not only that, there are nice people on both sides of the fence as well. I personally don't like PvP; I'm pretty much a pure PvE'er. I've tried it one or two times, and it never really clicked for me. So, these bug fixes wouldn't impact me in the slightest. That said, I think these bugs should be a very high priority, because I can understand the frustration with something you like doing not working so well.

For example, my cable modem was wonky for a while, in that if both my wife and I were playing, it would boot us off every half-hour to hour. This made some missions very hard to complete. Until I fixed the issue last week, it was getting really frustrating, and was kinda turning us off to the whole game. So I can empathize with the PvP'ers that must be feeling really frustrated with these bugs.

Here is what makes little to no sens to me. i4 the patch in it's entirety was about the arena. That was now 4 patches ago. To say they care little for pvp then why did they make an entire patch dedicated to it. Fix the arena and fix bases. I have never lost a 1 vs 1 rated duel yet if you look at my record it says I have lost 2, why? Because the arena is bugged and when you petition for such a matter they say sorry too bad.

That would rock; an exact count of how many people currently work on what, art, bugs/fixes, etc.
