New Comic Series: My Opinion... What's Yours?

OK I've been debating saying this, but I might as well.

I am not a fan of the new comic. The story feels extremely rushed to me. Within several pages of issue 1 they took 2 main concepts of CoH (Super Powers & the hospital teleports) & completely turned them on their ears. Then by Issue 2, we've (((SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER))) learned Statesman's origin & gone to another plane of perception to speak to Prometheus to restore everyone's powers. That coupled with the fact that not-one of the heroes is likeable in my opinion or has had any type of substantial development, renders this comic very sub-par so far.

I'll keep reading it since, well, it's like free and stuff (hehe), but I really hope it gets better cause I've been very disappointed so far.

Am I the only one that isn't digging it?

Thanks,

It probably is rushed. I am still waiting on my second ish, so not sure there. I think I read somewhere that Mark Waid is only writing the first three issues. I could easily be mistaken however. If that's the case, he could just be pushing to have his arc done before the next writer comes in.

I liked the first issue of the new comic better than the entire Blue King run...

Well, this is one of those things where what works good in a video game might not necessarily do well in contributing to a dramatic story- the medi-port system is a prime example of that.

If no one can die, where's the risk? And I do believe is says this much in the first issue as well...

I think the current series, thus far, is everything that the original series should have been. I didn't find any of the characters in the Blue King series to be likable, but I like all of the characters in the current series. I don't see how they've really turned anything on its ears.

I'm still scratching my head over the "disconnecting" in the first issue, though.

Yeah, Mark is doing #1-3 and I'm doing #4-6 (having a ball with it, too).

My main concern is that my worst fear has been realized. Similar to DC and Marvel, and with no offense intended to anyone, Top Cow basically removed any black character. So with Horus gone, no story arc with the Brawler, CoH comic is now just like the mainstream comics, devoid of anyone of African descent. So while playing the game is great in that it allows for diversity, the same cannot be said of the comic.

While it is free, I'll just be using it for fireplace fodder unless I see some changes...

And for what its worth, I thought the first story arc in the initial comic book held truer to the game.

After reading the first 3 issues of Common Grounds, I have to say: I'm really looking forward to 4-6 of the new CoH. Common grounds is what the superhero comic world has desperately needed for years.

The worst part is, I probably would have never read them If I hadn't heard you were going to be writing for the CoH comic. Marketing can be the tool of good after all.

I like it so far. I think its Manticore that does it for me. He basically is taking a bad situation and making it worse to make it better. I absolutly love the last page of the comic where he **spoilers****spoilers*** shoots Statesman in the heart. I agree that its definately not the best comic out there, but its fun to me and it lets us see more of the main characters like States and Pozi.

*SHakes his head* Frankly, this "It's gotta have a black main character or I'm not gonna look at it!" attitude is more racist than not having a black main character by far.

Plus, you don't -KNOW- there's not going to be anything with the Brawler yet. How could you?!

.....I....

Hmm

Well....

No that won't work..

You know racisim does work both ways. You don't see me complaining that their isn't someone who is obviously Native American. I am tempted to go further, but I have already probably provoked a war amoung the racists and those desperate to prove they aren't a racist. I have seen it in all races. Don't asume you are free of such things because of your decent. You aren't.

Advice: Get a grip. Things like this won't go away unless everyone lets go.

Hmm, the new comic...I wonder what it's like to read that. I have yet to get it...hell I only got four issues of the Blue King comics.

It's my own fault, I guess...I've deactivated my account several times for varying reasons, which is most likely what screwed things up.

Anyway, is it as violent and dark as I heard they were going to make it? That's my kind of comic.

If your account isn't active on a specific date each month I think you don't qualify for the comic..

Well, they did tweak the TP grid for the comic. The one we use and read about in-game isn't as infallible as their's is if the comic's grid allowed the heroes to go soft.

Thanks, Doc, I really appreciate that. And I hope you'll check out Common Grounds #4-6, as well, as they contain some of my own favorites, including "Glory Days" in #4 (anytime I can work with George Perez, I'm on cloud nine), and "Where Monsters Dine" in #5 (which got one of the two Eisner nominations CG has received). I think you'll dig 'em.

And to DeathSentry, given your concerns and criteria, I hope you'll check out CoH #4-6, and let me know what you think. I'd appreciate it.

What they're doing is kind of like a literary device called in media res. Which is to say it drops you right in the middle of the action. Unlike actual in media res, we're not going to flash back to the beginning and find out what led to that point. However, I don't mind this, as I already know the characters' backgrounds to a certain extent, and the trials and tribulations they've undergone prior to City of Heroes' timeframe.

I would love to see a series covering the Rikti War or other events in the iconic characters' history, but this seems to work fine as well.

I liked the first new one, posted about it somewhere else.

I got the first issue in the beginning of June, which I thought was great because the other ones came somewhere around the 10th of the month. The first issue says June.

So...how is it some of you already have July's? I don't.

The books are available about a month ahead of the subscriber mailing through comic shops. The people who are getting these copies are buying them there for the most part.

I received the first issue in the first week of June. The second issue arrived today.

There's a lack of consistency at work.

Keep in mind that this is my OPINION. I'm not saying the new comic is good or bad, just what I think.

First of all, I loved the Blue King comics. It had a good blend of action and comedy, the two things I look for in anything I read (cept for Wheel of Time, that doesn't need comedy to be cool). I liked the characters and the dialouge and thought it went really well with the storyline, as in it could have happened in the game without affecting any of us players.

The new comics... suck. They have no comedy at all and they don't have HEROES! These guys are not the Freedom Phalanx I imagine. I always thought that the greatest of the heroes in the city of heroes would be... not losers. Sister Psyche is a crazy lady, Manticore is a jerk, and Synapse is some trailer trash whack job. Positron is the only one I saw as heroic, trying to keep the rest of the team away so they don't get hurt.

And how can you have a super hero comic without super powers?! I always thought that was the basis for the whole thing, but I guess not. I don't know about you guys, but I don't find internal struggles that take up an entire comic as fun.

*tosses two pennies in the jar*

I think the reason I'm not really digging it so far is that it's just too much story for the first arc. It's hard to care about how the heroes are acting in this situation because I don't know how they act normally. I think if they had taken a few issues to show us the Freedom Phalanx during business as usual, who they are and how the react to each other, I'd get more invested in the story.

I don't know these characters well enough to care about their problems.

D'oh! No one brought in the mail, I had it all the time.

After reading it I stand by my first impression: I like it. I like these graphics much better. I don't think the story sucks, and I don't feel the story has to fit what we can do, or see, in the game. Personally, I think that would be boring.

I wonder if Synapse is feeling the effects of suppression.

Statesman needs to be nerfed, God mode is not fun, where's the risk vs. reward?

Oh, and Statesman said a bad word.

BINGO! That's my point, they didn't give us any build-up to the events in issue 1 so the whole thing feels way-too-rushed. This story seemes to me to be one that should occur well-after you've really described the normal functionings of Paragon City & it's heroes. Showing a bunch of heroes whacking some Clockwork & Outcasts for 5-6 pages doesn't do this.

Great feedback everyone.
