The Final Doctor Who thread (expect spoilers!)

Well how many villains in movies were just misunderstood or had good intentions that went awry in Superhero films lately? Nearly all Spiderman movie villains. Of course now I'm trying to think of more and I can't.

The Master was always insane.

As for superhero movie villains that are insane? Let's see:
  • Green Goblin
  • Joker
  • Doctor Octopus (canonically the explosion drove him nuts, in the movie the AI of his arms did)
  • Venom
  • David Banner
  • Red Skull (was gonna put him under "sane" but apart from being a Nazi he was an actual certified nutjob)
Mind you, one does need to be pretty unhinged to do what most of the following characters have done, but I wouldn't consider any of the following villains properly insane:
  • Sandman
  • Magneto and the Brotherhood (Mystique, etc.)
  • Abomination
  • Loki
  • Ra's al Ghul
  • Scarecrow (being driven temporarily mad doesn't count)
  • Bane
  • [SPOILER FOR TDKR]
  • Kingpin
  • Lex Luthor
  • Zod
  • Doctor Doom (varies by interpretation but Julian mcMahon's wasn't even close to insane)
  • Silver Surfer
  • Galactus
  • Obidiah Stane/Iron Monger
  • Whiplash
I'm sure I've left some out but I trust I've made my point.

But Norman Osborn had to do something to retain control of his company. Harry wanted to avenge his father's death.

Doc Oct was possessed by his arms while trying to do good for mankind.

Sandman just needed money for his daughter, the gun just went off. Now he simply wants to see her again.

Dr. Connors was another scientist who experimented on himself, working for the betterment of mankind.

Stane simply wanted control of Stark Industries.

Whiplash wanted to avenge what happen to his father and get him the credit he deserved.

General Ross made hunting the Hulk personal. Abomination, a man trying to prove himself toward the end of his career, enabled by Ross.

Loki, Red Skull, yea world domination pure and simple.

Most acts of villainy naturally require being at least slightly not right in the head.

Well evil and insanity are not necessarily the same.

Red Skull, Apocalypse, Emperor Palpatine, the Shadows from Babylon 5 are what I would call pure evil either from birth or their upbringing or a bit both.

Norman Osborn: a ruthless businessman and not a great father. Was he evil or insane before he got dosed with the goblin serum or did the serum bring out something that was already there inside of him?

Magneto: part of his problem is that he grew up in Auschwitz during the war and due to the abuse and malnutrition his powers didn't manifest until after the war. if he had his powers during the war he would have toppled the Axis in a matter of days so he is haunted by guilt over that, plus he will not see mutants persecuted the way people were during the war. He won't let it happen again so for him the ends justify the means.

Silver Surfer: became the herald of Galactus to save his world from Galactus. In the process, Galactus reprogrammed the Surfer's mind to make him more suitable as herald. Does that make the Surfer evil? No.

Galactus: a force of nature beholden only to itself and certain powers of the universe. He is not malevolent and the worlds he consumes are chosen at random without malice, at least that is how it is supposed to be. Humans raise crops and animals for food purposes, Galactus operates in a planetary scale.

Joker: chaos personified. Why no one has put this guy down for good is astounding.

The Doctor doesn't kill. Oh goodness no.

Other people kill for him.

That's what he does, if you remember. The Doctor turns people into weapons.

Rubbish.

That's just an excuse used by people who don't want to accept what perfectly sane normal humans are capable of.

Perfection is nigh impossible where humans are concerned.

I dislike the whole darlek storylines - while I understand the need for a villian, the beauty of the reboot of WHO was last time lord, everyone, everywhere, everywhen was dead..time lord and darlek. The episode where Rose and the DR. find the last darlek was awesome. Suddenly having billions of darleks all over the time stream is not true to the reboot. If they are going to have a billion darlek show up everytime, they should recton time lords again - rani, romana etc..

Solomon killed his Triceratops, he deserved to die.

It is interesting that nobody noticed this was a larger Harry Potter reunion since Solomon was David Bradley who played Argus Filch.

Too many alts to list.

Yup. I liked how Solomon says "I heard you called Doctor", and the Doctor thinks "bother, my vanishing trick hasn't worked". Then he realises "oh, you mean a medical doctor!".

I thought it was a bit to obvious to mention.

Most of the cast of Harry Potter has been or will be in Doctor Who. I'm waiting for the announcement that Rupert Grint is the 12th Doctor.

He'd only do it if the chameleon circuit were repaired and the TARDIS could become an ice cream truck.

I'm pretty sure the 12th doctor is going to be the first female regeneration. They've dropped enough hints about it happening with Timelords.

The 12th Doctor is going to be Hugh Laurie, dammit!

Seriouspost: I seriously doubt they've planned that far ahead.

Just saying it's possible. I mean I'm not saying they've got a new one lined up, but it wouldn't surprise me if when they start looking to cast a new doctor they start looking at actresses and not actors.

But we know Smith has said he doesn't want to step down yet, so we'll probably get at least this season out of him, who knows what next season will bring.

Rupert Grint wouldn't be as bad as Emma Watson, and there are at least as many hints about Ginger Doctor as Female Doctor.

They could always go with Geri Halliwell though...

This season plus whatever they do for the anniversary next year, which I assume will probably be something along the lines of a series of specials.

A Town Called Mercy wasn't bad. I'm not really thrilled with Whithouse's seeming obsession with hamfisted Doctor Parallels (though I will say this was WORLDS better than God Complex, this one at least didn't beat you over the head with it). But I dunno, the resolution didn't really sit right with me. Ok, guy blew himself up, I guess everything is cool now. Just.. eh. It wasn't bad, just didn't feel all that satisfying.

This season has thus far been pretty... well, not mediocre but I guess average? I'm just not that excited, I'm not getting any really good vibes from it so far. The first season was pretty damn solid, the second season really kind of divided between the Moffat episodes (and the doctor's wife) which were pretty brilliant and fun, and then the non-moffat/gaiman episodes which were kind of dull and uninteresting. I mean it could be like the previous seasons where there is something threading through each episode and we're not aware until the veil gets pulled from our eyes but the thing about that was that it wasn't the thread that made the previous episodes good, they were good in and of themselves and that added an extra piece of mystery and intrigue. I'm not sure what they might do that could make me just go eyes wide and "Wow those episodes were WAY more awesome than I thought". I mean at worst I can see these ending up as set pieces, like the Pirates last season (though the crowning moment of awesome for them in A Good Man Goes to War still didn't make the Curse of the Black Spot any better). None of the episodes this season have been bad though they just haven't been that good to me.

So I dunno, I'm kind of mixed so far.

The best part of the episode was Ben Browder.
