Just another invasion

So from what I hear Captain Mako's event is just a limited invasion. Is there a badge or can I skip it?

Whats stupid about invasions?
I happen to like them.

You can skip it.

If all you care about is badges then yes you can skip it, however it's not "just" another scripted invasion since the spawns are dev-controlled.

So what do the do differently? Everything I've seen shows them all in a group getting cut down by all the AoEs like every invasion.

You're describing 90% of the game - maybe it's time for a break?

So then they don't do anything different. Just like the "Dev controlled" Praetorian invasion where they spawned in with a bunch of mobs and just stood there. How exciting.

In the end it's all 1s and 0s anyway.

While true shouldn't the journey be interesting?

First it appears as a 0. THen you see it as a 1. Afterwards you perceive a 0. Has it changed, or merely has your perspective?

Or the crapton of chemicals I slipped in your water perhaps?

Is it??? Isn't it actually just on or off?

It's more interesting than a punch in the junk, that's for sure.

Statesman didn't have to worry about that

Banter is important to the superhero genre. A dev controlled event like this can banter with players, adding immersion and making up rules on the fly to make things interesting - say, the event culminating in Mako challenging 3 people to a 3 v 1 duel against him before the slog of heroes jump him.

The cost that comes with it is that mobs have to be triggered manually. But the versatility that a live GM has is worth it, IMO. Give me a talking fish that taunts, acts, and reacts over just a scripted event anyday.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm most certainly open to suggestions for how we can improve this experience. Keep in mind the following criteria:
  • We are supporting this almost entirely with only the Community Team (with some Customer Service assistance). These are all manual spawns controlled by us. Meaning we spawn, run to spawn more as you all mow through them, provide witty banter, switch zones, rinse repeat, try to keep up with the players.
  • We have to use nothing but preexisting assets. Because of where development is right now, we can't interrupt their schedule to add new assets to the game for this.
  • We have to hit each server during their respective primetimes.

I look forward to your suggestions .

If the banter is anything like the Nemesis invasion one, count me out.

"Oh look, it's Nemesis himself! And he's complaining about his steampunk computer crashing. And talking about ponies. And making comments about everything being a Nemesis plot. Yeah, I'm out."

I'd suggest running more events like these if, and when, it is possible. I've been playing CoH for eight years now, and I have to say that the invasion on the Champion server last night was one of the best Dev run invasions I have ever experienced. It went on for nearly 90 minutes, the challenge was real, and it felt like the heroes were having to give it their all to protect Peregrine Island. It was unpredicable when and where the Devs would send in the invasion troops, and the inclusion of a certain giant monster made it just that much more epic. At one point when Captain Mako fled he was wily enough to lead us all directly into an ambush that was hiding nearby on the docks, ensuring his escape.

Well played, Mako. Well played.

Question: Does "preexisting assets" include opponents you could make in AE?

I think the phrase "could make" negates the word "preexisting". If you "could make" something, it clearly doesn't exist yet.

Pre-existing also = no invasion code spawns for these groups, so they have to pick them at 50-54 to provide a challenge for high level players who can sidekick lower level ones, rather than all higher levels having to exemp to get a challenge from them.

My problem was that on Liberty the villain invasion was fought by 9 players for the first two or three waves, and we missed Mako and the Coralax entirely. Just Lusca as far as the eye could see.

An invisible badge(so no cries about missing a badge) for participating that granted the Dark Matter Aura. Very few got the aura, and it is extremely frustrating trying again and again to get this aura.

Are you sure that's not just the devs giving away the Dark Matter code to random players?

Ah, thank you, yes, that makes sense. I'd been trying to figure out why they decided to go with 54s and not auto-scaling critters.
