I'd give Mike Carey's depiction of Lucifer a nod because in addition to being at or near the top in terms of raw power, he's also demonstrated that he's capable of taking down gods and godlike beings when he himself has been de-powered.

(assuming we don't just award it to God; in that series, God has basically all of Lucifer's skillset and then some - if you defeat him it's because he wanted you to)

Squirrel Girl carries a utility belt comprising multiple pouches that contain nuts to give as snacks to her squirrel friends. These are known, to much comedic effect, as her "nut sacks".

I read this part of her description and am now a loyal Squirrel Girl fan.

In that series, Michael is depicted as more powerful, because he is the equal of Lucifer but also possesses the power of creation. Lucifer is the smarter and craftier one, though.

Basically, Lucifer is depicted as having angelic power and Batman's brain.

Yeah, I came very close to using the Batman comparison myself.

I'm inclined to include intellect and craftiness when considering how powerful a character is though, even if that does push us all closer to that debate Blood Red Arachnid is leaving aside for now.

(and I liked the Azrael vote, though it does make me wonder about the other Old High Ones, but I don't imagine we'll ever get any details about them)

Beat me too it. First thing I thought of when I saw the topic.

Count my vote for Azrael from Discworld series as well.

The one thing you can say about Lucifer in the Carey series is that he does the one thing that is presumptively impossible in a universe with an omnipotent and omniscient God: he gains his freedom.

What about Death from the Sandman comics. . .
"When the first living thing existed I was there waiting. . . When the last living thing dies my job will be finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights, and lock the universe behind me when I leave. . ."

That was something I used to carry in my wallet when I was kid. I always adored the image of Death locking the universe behind her like this was just another job. . . And she was always so "peachy!"

If she will be there when all others are gone, i definitely think that makes her the most powerful character.

In that case my vote is for Shadowthrone from the Malazan books.

Good point, God apparently made a mistake in allowing that to happen, a fatal mistake. And the Saint of All Killers sat for moment on that throne amidst all his huge carnage and devastation.

But, completely uninterested in ruling as supreme being of the universe, he just returns to his grave to sleep at last, his cosmically huge need for vengeance satisfied.

Other than the basic underlying rule of the universe (You do not make things "Be Not" - atomize, incinerate, dead any of a multitude of self-cleaning ways, sure, but not "Be not") by the time he's been told it's impossible, he's done it.

And he gave his wife every food she craved while pregnant.

Haruhi Suzimaya... sort of.

Take the abilities of any other omnipotent force seen in this thread: plop them into a 16 year old girl who doesn't know she HAS these abilities, and uses them to create aliens, time travelers, espers, and whole universes... and can even erase them just as easily... sub-consciously.

Of course, then you have humanoid interfaces which can cancel out and even -steal- those powers, the giant Eldrich Abominations which control those interfaces... and the otherwise powerless 16 year old boy who can blackmail -those- forces into submission with four little words.

Who's more powerful? The unknowing god? The alien which can cancel that god's powers? The super alien that can cancel out the little alien? Or the normal human who can scare the crap out of the super alien?

Azrael, the Death of Universes from the Discworld novels might outrank her. He'd basically be the one who gives her a performance review at the end of the DC Universe.

Someone needs to ask either Prachett or Gaiman about that in one of those fanboy Q&A moments. They correspond regularly, so they could probably work it out between them.

Lady Hild, from the Ah! Megami-sama (Ah! My Goddess) Manga.

She's the ruler demons, mother of one of the main characters and has to seal away a lot of her powers when she appears on Earth because she could accidentally destroy it if she Blinks funny.

That was my thinking, since the Discworld Death seems to be a comparable entity to the DC Endless Death. That would make Azrael the Death of all Deaths.

Depending on how you define "more powerful" nothing can destroy Azrael in the Discworld multiverse because in effect all agents of destruction work for him. Not only are all Deaths servants to him, even the Auditors of existence seem to be at least subservient to him and have no power over him. Since Azrael is the ultimate destroyer of everything and nothing can destroy him in any realm of existence, that's one definition of most powerful.

Me. According to some quantum physicists, I can create a whole new universe just by deciding between Twinkies and Ho-Hos at the 7-11. Then we have both a Twinkie Universe and a Ho-Ho universe, etc...

That sounds more like a vote for Hostess.
