Marvel NOW! (or It's a relaunch, not a reboot!)

With the San Diego Comic Con next week, leaks and rumours and stuff is coming out regarding upcoming plans for Marvel's comics this fall.

Due to a variety of reasons Marvel is rebooting their comics this Fall. Lots of #1 issues, new books for existing characters, and more blending of the X-Men and Avengers characters onto teams. Plus costume redesigns - always good to grab the public attention with a new outfit.

A great deal of creative talent is shifting around as well - Bendis off Avengers and on X-Men related stuff, Hickman off Fantastic Four and onto Avengers and Faction off Iron Man and onto Fantastic Four. And sadly, Brubaker off of Captain America.

From Bleeding Cool:

Quote:
Bleeding Cool has been running a number of stories, detailing rumoured relaunch titles, such as Wolverine by Frank Cho, Uncanny Avengers by Remender and Opena, Hickman and Ribic on Avengers, Nova with Ed McGuinness, Fraction and Larocca on Fantastic Four, Gillen and Land on Iron Man, John Romita Jr and Rick Remender on Captain America, Bendis and Immonen on X-Men… and more but so far all they are, are rumours.

However, I do know that this is a relaunch and not a reboot. No continuity will be reset, it will still be the Marvel Universe continuing stories. Just that lots of titles will now have a lovely fresh #1s, some will have new names, some will be cancelled and characters will have new designs, motivations, story arcs and raison d’etre.

My guesses as to why Marvel is making this move?

Sustained historical low sales numbers of non-event Marvel books, the moderate success of DC's New 52 stealing the spotlight, and the chance to tie the Marvel comic material more closely into the Marvel movie universe.

Oh, and they are bringing the original X-Men (including Jean Grey!) to the present via time travel (and they see what a mess the X-Men have become), Cyclops gets a cool costume redesign, and Rocket Raccoon joins the Uncanny Avengers in a new book....

....yet another reason to consider cancelling what subscriptions I have left, really. But I think people have seen the slow but inevitable death of the printed medium for a while.

I quit my obsession with collecting a long time ago........BECAUSE OF CRAZY, RANDOM, NONSENSICAL changes.

I'm pretty sure continuing that trend isn't going to get me to ever get back into the new stuff.

Have they ever tried a "classic" approach to a series? Can be modern times, but with the classic look and classic story telling?

It is rumored that Guardians if the Galaxy might be the next Marvel team to get a movie in 2014. There greatest threat is Thanos and we all seen him in the bonus clip after the Avengers credits.

Actually that Nick Fury is this Marvel Universe's Nick Fury's son, Nick Fury Jr., not the ultimate version.

So essentially this is MarvelNu.....YAY.....and the big two keep copying each other....oy vey! Setting the numbering back to issue 1 is getting so passé that its getting to be obnoxious....I just started reading Iron Man again too.....I may drop it because of Land being the artist. Depending on what he draws sometimes it just comes out all wrong.

I don't care about 616 at all, it has nothing that interests me but Cap's new costume does interest me(wish it were even closer to the first avenger prototype or even final design though) and bringing Fury's son to the foreground also interests me

Like DC's New 52, I'll be willing to give this a shot before condemning it. They say it isn't going to be a reboot, so maybe it won't be too bad.

Besides ... ROCKET RACOON ON AN A-LIST TEAM!!!!

(without Groot, though)

Wouldn't say MarvelNu since it's not a reboot of the Marvel Universe. As far as I know Marvel isn't going to retcon the whole universe. Bits and pieces maybe, but not the whole universe like DC did. It's just a relaunch of various series as far as I know

The only positive I can see from this is that the abominations that are: "One more day" and "No more mutants" can be retconned forever.

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

Update - A new Marvel book will be relaunched each week from October 2012 to Februar 2013....

The new Entertainment Weekly, as well as confirming Bleeding Cool’s report that the relaunch would be called Marvel NOW!, provides details of how the relaunch is going to work. Specifically that one book will be launched or relaunched every week from October through to February 2013, totalling twenty-two titles, beginning with the previously reported Uncanny Avengers and including Avengers, All New X-Men and a number of titles, presumably, our Marvel NOW! Rumour Checklist.

We’ve seen how characters look to be completely redesigned, teams changed and titles amended. However it is worth reminding readers that, unlike DC’s reboot, the continuity will not be rebooted…

it makes perfect sense if you're a corporate entity looking to milk ever more cash from a dwindling audience.

I feel your pain. I'm down to maybe two DC titles since thier reboot and only a handful of Marvel titles. And with them rebooting, I may drop a few more.

Luckily, there is an answer other than just forever giving up on comics.

The simplest solution to this is to not read Marvel or DC comics.

The Walking Dead, Invincible, The Boys, Saga, Criminal, Witch Doctor...all great comics, none of them by Marvel or DC. And as far as know, none of them have done anything silly or gimicky.

It all depends, if that's Nick Fury Jr., I'm fine with it. Basically in a recent storyline, it turns out that Nick Fury had a bi-racial son, who incidently is identical to the Ultimate Nick Fury, and there was a sort of passing the torch momment.

Hmmmm.... I suppose to one up the current Iron man, Tony Stark will have been completely replaced with unobtanium laced bucky balls and nano-tubes filled with phomblin holding nano mega super computers creating a self contained cloud containing his distilled intelligence and personality while simultaneously backing himself up on every IPhone, IPad, and IPod on the planet in an Apple product placement cross-over.

Goliath - DiDio and his team said the same about DCnU...and look how that worked out for the DC Nation fanboys (of which I'm a MASSIVE fan-nerd, so I'm not picking).

No, the only thing that surprises me is that it's taken this long for Marvel to follow suit.
