Marvel Avengers First Review
Thought for the day:
"Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment."
=][=
I'm talking about the main death...the one that motivates them.
Wasn't in the movie. It was just a rumor floating around. |
Ah good, so I didn't miss any Vision related easter eggs, good thing I didn't or else I might need my own vision checked. (bad pun, I know)
Just came back from the midnight show. Of course crowd of hard core fans. Only real costume I saw was someone dressed as Ralph, the Greatest American Hero. I don't think a lot of the youngsters got it. Again local (to the theater) comic shop handed out free Avenger comic books.
Previews to Frankenweenie, Brave, The Dictator, Prometheus, The Dark Knight Rises.
Everyone gets to team with everyone else in the big battle. I think Joss Whedon watched a lot of Looney Tunes when he was growing up.
Didn't think a reason I would want to see it again was because I missed half the jokes/quips over the crowd's laughter.
Oddly I found myself attracted to women in bare feet and shorts.
The extra scene got a lot of cheers about what I assume to be the next Avengers film.
The post credits scene hilarious. Funnier still watching the hard core fans wait for dialog. And what is shawarma? Anything like a gyro?

Just came back from the Midnight Showing and I loved this movie. Also I saw it in 3D and for once I actually had no problem with the 3D. Not even during the Thor and Iron Man fight scene. Pretty much the kick-[censored] awesomeness of this movie has already been said a good deal on this forum. So no need to repeat other than to say "Go see this movie!"
If I had to say anything negative about this movie it would be about the crowd reaction. Hard to hear a few of the lines and enjoy some scenes over the laughs, the cheers, and applause. Definitely will be seeing this multiple times.
There's the mid-credit scene that everyone will enjoy, and probably seen via leaked sources. The only thing I will spoil is the end credit scene which was put in at the last minute. It's up to you if you want to see it, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea and some might not find it worth staying for. It's.....
The Avengers sitting around a table in a damaged sandwich shop eating, that's it. Ties in to what Tony was talking about after saving the day.

That movie was incredible, amazing, invincible, etc. etc.
There was hardly anything bad about it aside from that one thing that happened to that one cool person. People who have seen the movie know what I'm talking about.
You should all go watch it. Then watch it again.

Just got back myself.
It's Thor's own night out there in Chicago. Stormy as hell with huge miles-long thunderbolts lighting up the sky.
But a little thing like death by EXTREME electrocution isn't going to stop me.
This is right up there with Nolan's Batman for greatest Superhero Flick EVER. And for completely different reasons. Nolan went for gritty realism.
Whedon...eh...not so much.
As expected, Downey gets some of the BEST dialog in the film.
But the Hulk. MY GOD! He get not one, not two, BUT ALL of the best and funniest scenes in the entire flick! It's like someone fused all of the Stooges together, tossed a bucket of green paint on them and then ticked them off.
Basically Whedon's sense of "funny" is what keeps this flick from getting too melodramatic. And there's so much of it in there that you almost can't catch it all in one sitting. You just can't. He got the tone of the film ABSOLUTELY perfect.
And for those of you worried that this was a case of "It was all in the commercials". No. Not even close. Not even in the same time zone.
If any of these apply to you:
- Whedon fan
- Action film fan
- Comedy film fan
- Drama film fan
- Superhero fan
- Marvel fan
- Fan of ANY of the properties involved
- LIKE GOOD MOVIES!
- LIKES MOVIES!
- Has $10 in your pocket AND A PULSE.
Do yourself a favor and go see it.
Don't wait for DVD.
Don't wait for a damn crappy cam download.
If you even THINK of waiting for it on Netflix, you're dead to me.
SEE THE FRICKING FILM IN THE THEATER!
2D, 3D, whatever floats your skirt up.
But see it. This is one of those films that Hollywood rarely puts out that actually deserves to be gone to and watched on the big screen. If you want to see more films like this, tell the movie industry about it by going and seeing this one.
Just got back from the Midnight show.
If you see this movie, and if you don't then say it is one of the top three super hero movies *of all time*, then I will hunt you down and take all your comic books and burn them on your front lawn and then I will take a sledge hammer to every computer you own on which you have installed City of Heroes.
That is all.

WATCHED IT! LOVED IT! OMG!
I disagree with them saying Stark got all the best lines. I thought Banner got all the best lines!
There was one scene I was holding my breath on though, I was all "YES! YES! IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN!" I was just waited and waited and then...TOTALLY LET DOWN BUT IT WAS STILL AWESOME!
Maybe in Avengers 2!
Also, totally squeeled when the title screen came up! Just because!

I got back 2 hours ago from the midnight showing.
Loved every minute of it. I felt so exhilarated just walking to my vehicle in the parking lot just after seeing it. The Avengers finally came to the big screen and it was awesome!!!!
Please go see it. I intend to watch it at least 3 more times this weekend alone (took off work last night just to watch the midnight showing - I was that excited to see it).
So then, I take it everyone who has now seen it is quite satisfied? I know I was when I saw it on a business trip overseas.
I also presume there are no complaints as to how Loki was brought down to defeat? Please note I refer to Loki personally, not his army
Hulk and Stark get some of the best lines, also I like how we got a small bit of angst from Cap about being out of his time, but I'm sure that the rest is all saved for Captain America 2 which is as it should be.
I also smile when Cap is giving the orders for the battle and Hulk is the last one to get his orders and it's simply this:
Captain America: "And Hulk........!"
HULK looks at him expectantly
Captain America: "........SMASH!"
HULK just smiles, leaps into the battle and proceeds to SMASH
Also I think Whedon stated in interviews there are at least 30 minutes of deleted scenes for the DVD's when they release. I suspect one of those scenes will be of Cap reading up on what happened to his Howling Commandos and to Peggy. I wouldn't be surprised if not only Howard Stark was a SHIELD founder, but that Peggy and at least some of the Howling Commandos were the original group of SHIELD Agents, it's only fitting.
Just got back from a midnight showing. It's great. Go see it.
Stay after the credits, for both stingers. Both are great.
*SPOILERS*
Hulk thrashing Loki around like a ragdoll was the single most satisfying scene I've ever watched in any movie, ever.
@Demobot
Also on Steam
So yes, pretty much the same

If that was the case, then how would Iron Man 1 make sense, when they didn't even go by SHIELD then?
|
Iron Man 2 reveals that Howard Stark helped start SHIELD, or whatever name it may have had back in that era.
We do not yet know the history/fates of Cap's Howling Commandos or Peggy Carter and there have been early reports that Dum Dum Dugan is going to be in Cap 2 despite Cap 2 being set in modern times. A really old Dum Dum Dugan? Will they keep him young with the Infinity Formula? or is this the Grandson of Dum Dum Dugan?
I think it would be fitting if the Commandso and Peggy Carter were part of the original SHIELD agency.

I really should do something about this signature.
Finally saw it last night . Aside from the idiot kids clapping like a circus seal whenever something cool happened , it was pretty enjoyable . BW finally was worth her salt and even Hawkeye had some cool moments . Solid B+ for me going to see it maybe two more times mainly for Hulk .
I like the part where Stark and Banner where chatting and basically comparing notes about their little problems, you know:
1. Banner being the Hulk
2. Stark stating that the arc reactor in his chest keeps the shrapnel still in his chest away from his heart.
However Stark's comment about the shrapnel still in him gave me a moments pause. Yes in Iron Man 1 Yinsen did state that he couldn't get all the shrapnel out, hence the magnet and car battery being plugged into him. Iron Man 2 gave no indication that the shrapnel was removed, but clearly he tinkered with his life support unit since in IM2 he could pop out the arc reactor from his chest at will and replace its power pack then plug it back in.
I would think though that with all the super science we've now seen in the Marvel movies that getting the rest of the shrapnel out of Tony's chest should be possible. He'd still need the arc reactor of course as chest/heart surgery is rather major and would require the arc reactor for a long time, possibly forever, due to lingering damage from the shrapnel and surgery.
However preliminary reports about IM 3 state it is based on the Extremis story line. In that story line when Tony took the Extremis and upgraded his body he stated he grew all new organs which means that for the movie if they stick with that part of Extremis he would very well purge the shrapnel, heal or regrow his heart (and alcohol abused liver). He should still keep the arc reactor in him though as it looks cool as well as powers the IM armor.
Actually, there was a Vision easter egg in Captain America, as the Android Human Torch (which later bacame Vision in the comics) did a cameo during the Expo scene. Edit: Oh wait, I see you knew that.
|
Would be nice if they get him into the movies. If Marvel Movie Studio can't have the F.F. since Fox retains the movie rights, they just might be able to get the Android Torch in instead.
Also Torch and Vision in comics are separate beings now. Long story.
Yeah, having that cameo in Cap was a nice touch and rather fitting since as I recall from the Timely era he predates Cap and Namor.

It would be a fun scene, if in a Cap 2 flashback shows Steve taking the Synthoid, which he is unable to activate, lighting him on fire and somehow catapults him at the enemy to explode where he lands. That way they can get the Human Torch in it without license dispute.
After sleeping on it, two points.
One, Loki has never seen The Incredibles, since he tends to get tripped up while monologging.
Two, the argument could be made that so-and-so wasn't Jossed. Jossed characters don't get to linger, don't get the last word and don't get a last shot in, they simply die. Heroic death yes, Jossed no.
And yes I'm trying to keep this thread fairly spoiler free.

And I get the movie rights thing, Just think it'd been cool if it could have been worked out.
Last I read was that Blade and Punisher have reverted to Marvel and characters like Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Doc Strange are still in Marvel's movie studio so they could pop up or at least be mentioned or have a cameo.
So unless Marvel/Disney wants to fork over some serious cash to regain X-men/FF/Spidey movie rights, the alternative is for the Mightiest Lawyers from Sony/Fox/Marvel-Disney to assemble and hammer out one DOOZY of a contract to allow for all the characters to be used together in movies.
I suspect it would be quicker for Marvel-Disney to just hand over the cash.......call it a hunch
