So Staff, what do you think
Hey, Z, quick question to you (and due to the public nature of this medium, everyone else) - why isn't Willpower listed as a complimentary set?
I am genuinely curious, as that's what I've teamed SF with on my Stalker, but am only level 7 so although I've thoroughly enjoyed it, and haven't come close to death, still don't have a very clear idea how well it will perform in terms of survivability or damage output once I get to 50 and slot him with IOs (not the super expensive ones - just run of the mill IOs). And before the influx of 'why didn't you go with Ice?', it may sound petty, but I hate the look of the set. I'm not a min/maxer, even though the above question suggests I am. If I can't stand looking at a set, I don't see how I could play the character for 50 levels |
Gonna try it with SR I think.
Don't really care if it's not the new SS/Fire. Dealing stupid amounts of damage with brokenly overpowered combinations isn't why I play the game.

I went with Staff/Dark brute. Named Aquamarius, he's an insane cannibalistic fishman who hates fish. So he constantly tries to get himself killed, but the hospital teleporter always 'saves' him.
You get AOE's early, with their attendant large end costs. Willpower has +end powers to help mitigate this.
Willpower has very little native +defense. Staff adds VERY healthy levels of defense via an AOE attack! Win!
Staff is very good AOE, ok single target, and very good mitigation. This synchs well with willpower to create a high-survivability toon that can fight crowds safely, thus getting the most use out of the AOE.
If I had to consider the best combo's with staff, I'd be looking at staff/electric. Staff is +def and aoe, electric is resist, damage aura, end powers, and +recharge.
The combo could be...potent.
Staff is full of win on stalkers. That is all.

Enjoying mine, but they need to either lengthen the animation or apply damage quicker on the assassin strike. There's a pause in there that keeps making me wonder if I missed or not.

I can't speak for high levels; but early on it fills out the attack chain nicely. And on Brutes it makes building Fury easy.
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
Trying it now on a scrapper. The forms seem fun..but it REALLY sucks you have to take a power pick to actually get them. Sets like db, stj, tw..you dont have to take anything extra to get the combos and bonus goodness. especially in the era of IOs..a power you have to take and CANT slot a set in? That isnt a good thing.
As much as I love the animations, Eye of the Storm always makes me think of the Star Wars Kid..which is NOT a good thing. lol.
Also, Precise strike is moderate damage..serpents reach is high. Any guesses at the actual difference in damage? NOT even a single full digit. In comparison, in Ma, moderate is 103..High is 134. That is a big difference when everything is slotted..and for a set that idnt big on dps (so I hear)..I just cant help but wonder..why.
I am also trying not to think how much better the set might be on a stalker..with teh ease of crits, extra beefy attack in AS, and not having to pick something to get a Form.
Oh, also. StJ and Tw BOTH benefit a lot from being able to start a combat at Max (as in, combo 3 or Full Mo)..which in staff, you cant do. A lil sad.

And yet, I still can't convince anyone here that cannibalism is a viable Power Set. I can only imagine the chaos we would see if a seafood restaurant ever showed up in game.

Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?
What the hell? Let's buff defenders.
Tactics are for those who do not have a big enough hammer. Wisdom is knowing how big your hammer is.
It's true. This game is NOT rocket surgery. - BillZBubba

As much as I play the game for the chance to relive my greatest comic book adventures (mainly fighting hordes of bad guys), it's little colorful things like this that really keep me here. A cannibalism Power Set? Run that by the MasterMind Forum as 'New Primary where the Mm devours his own pets and grows stronger' and they'll be beating down your door for it!
"Comics, you're not a Mastermind...you're an Overlord!"
I have played my SM/Regen to lvl 10 and my SM/EA to only 8 but both seem fun and highly survivable. The End Redux Form seems helpful when the End-hungry AoEs come on-line before DOs are available. Attack chain doesn't seem to need the +Rech but I imagine when the Web Grens hit I'll be going there. When I get DOs and End is less of a problem I'll be trying the +Dmg with the AoEs to make them even more awesome.
However the in-game info is wrong. I noticed that it has base damage for all of the attacks listed in the single digits.
I don't know whether the set will be giant-killer or not but it sure seems like fun to me.
The break-dance animation needs an alternative ASAP however. Worst part of the set from what I've seen so far...
"Comics, you're not a Mastermind...you're an Overlord!"
A good set, all in all.
The Good:
- Another very fun set to watch as well as play.
- The endrdx Form makes end hungry secondaries much more manageable at lower levels.
The Bad:
- Break-dancing moves in attack animations.
- Poor initial selection (4 pretty identical normal staves, 2 joke staves (broom, pipe), Trident, and Tech staff/glaive)
- City of Strippers/Inuendo
... Hit it ...

Big gap is probably the wrong phrase to use, but the +def from staff goes really well with wp. It already has def to e/n/f/c, but little to s/l. This means wp is prone to be hit by attacks with the tags: s/l and m/r/aoe.
If you take lethal and melee out of there you will be hit by smashing damage that is ranged/aoe without any of the other damage types (assuming set bonuses should be focused on the other types in this combo). That is very few attacks that I can think of. Combined with good s/l resistance and amazing regen staff/wp should be more godly than wp alone.
I have it on a tank with a bunch of toggles on and the endurance discount form helps noticeably. Maybe I won't use it end-game, but in leveling it is very useful.
I think discounting the versatility of the forms is a mistake. It is unfair to say "Staff has less ST dps than StJ and so sucks." StJ doesn't have the option to have endurance relief (or the other possibilities) and this has some value.
Also, the AOE on staff seems pretty good. I have no complaints about it for now.
"Hi, my name is Ail. I make people sick."
A partial selection from my 50's on Freedom: Ail = Ice/Traps, Luck = Street Justice/Super Reflexes Stalker, Mist = Bane, Pixy = Trick Arrow/Archery, Pure = Gravity/Energy, Smoke = Fire/Fire Dominator
Are you telling that person (and me) that we're actually NOT enjoying it? Because, if so, I've got some news you may not like.

Good and fun are not always linked. But one is objective, one is subjective.
British by act of union, English by grace of God, Northern by pure good fortune!
Not sure how I missed the humor in the title before...
I'm imagining a boss asking his staff members what they think...
Boss: So, staff, what do you think?
Staff: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes...
I think it is super fabulous fantastic, chief!!

I agree about Ice. It needs and FX update in a very very bad way. I hope some of what we see on the creatures in DA make it into a new look for ice armor.
