I disagree completely. COH has had moderately stable sub numbers for the past several years. Those numbers were obviously not enough for the owners to keep the game operating. Thus it's highly unlikely that anyone else who bought the game would suddenly make it explode into threatening numbers. Think about it...if the new owner DOUBLED the subs to 300,000 that wouldn't make a ripple in the millions of subs NCSoft has through its other games.

If NCSoft had one guy earning 20K a month work on JUST selling COH off for three months and they received, say, a million for it they're ahead 940k. I don't know much about the game industry but the ill-will alone would have been worth the effort IMHO. It was short-sighted of them to close things down in this way. Better to release the new issue (nearly done), hunt for buyers, announce their plan to sell and allow for some sort of continuity. Yes, they're playing to their (much wider) Asian market but by doing things this way they're soured the Western markets for themselves for years to come. Not good business sense.

I think something happened financially within NCSoft and someone panicked. They saw COH as making a trickle of cash (relatively speaking), saw what they'd save in payroll if they cut the Dev team and pulled the trigger.

    Customer loyalty is priceless.

    Still Trying

Some folks are working behind the scenes to try and save our community and our game. Some of them are on their own accounts trying to quiet cries for NCSoft's heads and organize events to show our support. The link below is for one such event:

Please check out Titan Network and see what's going on!
  4. I can understand why NCSoft wanted to drop CoX. As the above numbers show it was not a fiscal giant for them in any way the past few years.

My big question is why didn't they at least LOOK for a buyer? Hell, for the right price one of the other big firms (DC or the upcoming Marvel MMO) might have bought it just to shut it down. Or some other buyer might have purchased it, along with the outstanding subs, and just kept the lights on.

The game was set to generate 10 million dollars in revenue. Even if they kept a few Devs to handle problems and release the occasional Issue the server upkeep couldn't be THAT much. Even if everything was condensed down to Freedom and Virtue (the two most populous servers) there STILL would have been enough players around to support the project.

To just DROP a game and piss off 100k players who most likely will never touch your product line again seems a bit short-sighted to me.

I can understand why they did it...but it could have been handled MUCH better.

Many would join you. If the IP were made available would the playerbase buy it? At the time of 'The Announcement' CoX had about 100,000 players. If only half wanted in on the deal that fifty grand. Each one ponies up just twenty bucks and you have ten million dollars to buy the IP and arrange for the servers to be kept on until the game could be transferred.

    Yeah...I'd do it...
  6. In the past I have taken a peculiar delight in accumulating the posts of such ranters as this, demonstrating how, by their own words, they were being contradictory and stupid, and then watching them sulk away in disgust as they are proven wrong to one and all.

I think this time I'll cut out all the work and just watch him sulk away...

Wow...someone seriously forgot their meds this week...

No compromises. Fix the game. It's not hard; it simply requires commitment.

Of course it's hard. The fact that it requires commitment PROVES that it's hard. Anything that really needs to be done requires commitment and is hard.

New dance emote? No problem. Didn't really need to be done. Requires very little commitment.

Fixing everything wrong with an 8-year old MMO without completely destroying the game? VERY hard and requires massive commitment...and money. You gonna pay for it? Didn't think so...
  8. Hmmm...Bots/Time? Perhaps (steeples fingers...)
  9. I have a fun idea for a new themed MM but few ideas as to what sets to use. I need some help from the audience. Some caveats:

    I already have Zom/Dark, Bot/FF, Thug/Trap, Merc/Poison and Demon/Thermal so it can't be one of those.

Has to be FUN. Don't care if I can solo AVs or anything crazy...just want to be fun (as in 'I'm not standing around while the pets do ALL the work' fun)

Can't be OtT expensive to build (I don't mind IOs later on but I want to enjoy it at the DO/SO level)

The theme will be really over the top madman bent on conquering the world blah blah but he's a SERIOUS megalomaniac, monologuing all over the place and waving his fists at people. Then when his plans go wrong (as then often do) he does the typical villain rant and tirade.

    Suggestions from the house? Anyone?
  10. I made a Wolf Spider because I wanted to see if they were viable (as opposed to Crabs and Banes). Realized that with multiple builds I can have ALL THREE! Best thing of all is I can just RP the guy in different suits of armor! I'm not disappointed in how they fight either.

This new Nova will not kill Lts. after just Build Up. Of course you will have endurance so you can throw out Explosive Blast (although for Nrg this is problematic since you aren't likely to hit many enemies).

    I don't know.
Old Nova. A small chance to deal 3 scale damage. A big chance to deal scale 4.5 damage. A small chance to deal scale 6 damage.
I am not seeing scale 4 as the appropriate damage.

You're assuming zero Defiance yes? My Blasters almost always have a Defiance bonus after the first spawn. With even 50% bonus what would the damage be?
  12. There are SO MANY factors to figure into this argument it might make my head 'splode.

As Siolfir mentioned, when you get to the point where the enemies are being 1-shotted relative damage becomes 1-1. You also have to factor in Accuracy, the RNG, number and type of Insps used (if any) and so on.

IMHO the best way to get a solid scale of the two is to run the same mission a LOT of times with both toons. Check the time to complete. Record xps dropped because the spawns won't be identical every time.

Instead of comparing the damage of one AT to the damage of another or DPS or anything like that, how about using XPs generated per minute? If the rest of the toons are the same (identical IO loadout, no travel power etc) then run a mission 10 times with a Blaster and 10 times with a Corruptor. Record deaths, average time to run and XPs generated per minute then compare them.

If the Blaster kills faster (with Defiance) but dies more often his DAMAGE might be higher short-term but his leveling speed (more important to some players) might be lower.

Figure out what you want to measure before getting out the ruler.

The combination of new powersets (Time is very popular), new IOs (the ATOs are awsomesauce especially the procs) and more powerful characters (the Incarnate system makes the old lvl 50 seem soft by comparison) has raised the bar on difficulty. Youtube is filled with videos of characters doing things few of us could accomplish before.

While I am usually happy with +1/x2 early on and +2/x5 at the higher end there are players that are getting bored with +4/x8. However the Devs can't keep racing against 100,000 players forever. Eventually the 15 billion Inf builds will simply be too good for any real challenge.

My advice to players with high-end builds that are bored: Take out 12 billion worth of IOs and see what happens. Anyone can win a local drag-race with a million-dollar car. Try going back to the souped-up Chevy and remember how fun it was.
  14. For me, the ultimate joy of a Huntsman is that you can use alternate builds to HAVE Crabs and Banes! I RP mine as the Arbiter who puts on other suits of armor for specialty missions.

As you said, the Blaster I've always wanted.

Buy a Razor Naga mouse. It has a 12-key pad on the left side so all the keypad functions can be used without taking your hand off the mouse.

I agree with what was said about Blasters up-thread...that's why I bought the thing.

Between healing, buffing and having to chase down crazy scrappers who like to mistake themselves for tanks to throw out veng and a rez, there's just not time to lolly-gag around like that.

Now to me, this comes down to a style thing. I have tried to play an Emp Defender like 4 times and each time I bailed on them because right around 30 nobody seems to need/want me any more.

However, it's not your job to chase down crazy Scrappers. I consider that enabling. Let him pull the TV down on himself a few times...he'll quit. Better to stay with the team than get pulled out of position by one or two outliers who think they're invincible. The humility will do them good.

As for the attacks with 1 slot each, X-Ray Beam and Neutron Bomb have whopping -25% Def debuffs. Hell I'd 4-slot those for double Acc, End Redux and Range if nothing else. Whenever you have a free second, throw one into the spawn and make it easier for the next guy to hit something.

As I said, it's a style thing. However you play it, if it's fun then more power to you.

Thanks for all the replies, guys! Have a safe and happy 4th!

I have a Katana Brute with Regen and he rocks! You can get the Def bonus from Divine Avalanche to easily stack twice for great mitigation. Lots of End sources so you won't get tired running Tough as well.

And Katana is just plain fun!
  19. For myself (I have a Stone tanker at 41) the set is simply old and needs to be redone. It was built in the days when power trade-offs were more severe and the whole game was built around the team filling in holes that each other had. So a Kin could take care of Granite and so on.

No other set has a power that destroys hours of costume creation.

No other set encourages the player to do a respec based around a single power.

No other set has a power that makes only one travel power viable.

I'm not a numbers guy so I don't know exactly what level of Defense and Resist needs to be put in to fix things. You can't simply ask Granite to work on top of all the other toggles...the set would be worse than Dark Armor with monster End issues. The first thing that I would do is remove most of the -Run and -Jump from the set particularly with Rooted off.

Stone Armor is a great themed set that needs to be brought into the new century.

  21. To the OP: Good topic. Bad that I happened to see it...but good topic lol.

    Likes:

    The costume creator
    The invention system
    Lots of powersets
    Lots of ATs
You can solo most of the time
On high-pop servers you can team almost any time
Some really good plots and mission arcs
Many friends...a great community by and large
    Super-groups and Bases
Getting a really good team together and just having FUN!

    Dislikes:

Tedium in TFs and SFs, particularly useless 'Hunt X of Y' missions. The whole TF/SF system needs revamping IMHO. Remember how bad Posi used to be? People run it now for FUN! There's never a problem filling an ITF...because it's FUN! And I want to be able to SOLO TFs/SFs without needing a workaround!

Tedium in missions (specifically, NOT getting the phone number from the contact on the first mission). Missions that demand you escort someone when stealth is your main thing. Suicidal NPCs on missions. Old maps on missions especially the infamous layer cake, Council pool room and some of the office buildings. I also shudder when seeing the word Oranbega on the mission description.

Stores in distant corners of large zone maps. MISSIONS there are fine but stores? Also the fact that the AE ticket counter doesn't sell every kind of Enhancement. The fact that many enhancements have cutsey names that don't mean anything and I have to hit Info to find out if it does what I think it does.

The Salvage system (common items should be common, not 55,000 Inf). I personally think that higher-end items should not require lower-level salvage. People starting out in the system have few funds but they're expected to bid against gazillionaire veterans for the one piece of Iron they need to make their shiny new thing. Recipes 1-10 should use salvage gained in levels 1-10 and so on.

Base implementation (Love the concept, loathe building one). Possibly one of the single most hopeful yet underdeveloped things in the game

SG implementation (can't we get together for some benefit OTHER than Prestige?)

The costume creator (not enough asymmetrical pieces, too many horns, not enough helmets, too many alien heads)

Always hearing that something "can't" be done then seeing it a year or two later (I cite Power customization and all the years we heard that the colors were 'baked into the code' and couldn't be changed)

Not seeing the stuff we ask for the most (Base changes, Moon zone) and seeing crap we don't want/can't use (if I see ONE MORE dance emote before they fix the broken stuff I'll scream!)

The utter lack of desire to fix/finish the old stuff and keep pushing out the new. I once read that War Witch was at a con speaking on a CoH panel. Many of the fans were asking about finishing or fixing their favorite thing. She said that there weren't enough resources to do new stuff AND fix the old stuff and which did the players want more. The resounding cries of 'Fix the old stuff first' were apparently something of a surprise. TAKE THE HINT DEVS!

Developmental thinking. Another point that I read was that a Dev (I forget who) stated that the players "weren't using Bases the way they were intended." No offense but just HOW did you intend for us to use them? If you'd TOLD us during Beta 'We intend for Bases to be social hubs, travel hubs and places to decorate and build' then we would have said great...make the Base Builder better out of the box and we might actually DO that! The Devs need to tell us what they expect something to do, then ASK us what we think before they dump a bunch of time into it only to find out we have other ideas on how to use their toys.

This is a great game with a great community. The new players deserve all the benefits of the new shiny stuff. But the old players that have been here for YEARS deserve to see their dreams come true too. Don't be scared...make the changes. If you improve it, they will come.

It also applies a 3 magnitude hold and recharge and movement slow.

Based on the damage formula and taking aside the secondary effects, BFR should do 2.92 DS based on its endurance cost and 3.56 DS based on its recharge. Taking the 2.92 number for a second that means that BFR pays for its secondary effects with a 1.6 reduction in damage scalar. Although it isn't part of the classic calculation, BFR also has a very long 2.5 seconds cast time.

Ice Blast isn't falling behind because of any changes to it, the rest of the sets are surging ahead. The reason is the snipe. So why not just give BFR a damage boost and give it the snipe treatment.

    THE SUGGESTION

    Increase BFR damage scale to 2.76;
    Increase BFR's endurance costs to 18.512;
When character's to-hit meets or exceeds 97% BFR has an alternate 1 second animation time.

That's it. BFR pays for it's hold with a 0.8 reduction in DS based on both endurance and recharge. It gets a snipe strength attack. I recognize that without the 97% to-hit, BFR is better than the snipes on animation time, but it still costs more, recharges significantly slower, and has a much lower range.

My biggest complaint about BFR (and Ice Patch for Blasters) is the horrendous cast time. I'd go for this is a second.
  24. Water Blast (now on the Test Server) is visually stunning and very fun to play. I have a Water/Fire Blaster there now and he rocks.

I would name-camp a good name until I24 hits and go for a Water/Fire/Earth combo of some kind. Also remember that thanks to coloring powers you CAN make Dark look like fire or sand/earth with a little effort. This might open up your choices a bit. Ice also works for the Water end if you can't wait for I24.
  25. Prediction: Water/Fire Blasters will be the new FotM once this goes live and the Blaster changes are implemented. Mine is at 15 right now on Test and there's SO much AoE to be had! Water Jet at 80' will add 3 solid ST attacks as well, plus an AoE debuff/slow AND a debuff/self +Regen in Dehydrate.

Yeah...this one is gonna be popular...
