Blast from the Past

Huh... noticed a few powersets there that did not make it in-game until MUCH later (plant control).

And I do miss that music sometimes, as well as that *BOOM* as I clicked to log in that was replaced with a click sound.

Click? Really? I want the *BOOM* back.

Please get rid of the STATESMAN PELVIC THRUST.

Say no to SPT it gives new meaning to "splash screen."

I spy with my eye some interesting things

Powersets we would get later:
Super Willpower (as just willpower)
Darkness control (Though this may have been the early Dark Miasma)
Electricity control
Plant Control

Enemy groups:
Revelation
Twilight Men
Killing Crew
Fear Factor

Misc:
A type of fog that you could actually fly 'over'
A ranged power's ability to go through multiple targets without apparently being a cone
Fifth Column, Fifth Column everywhere. (Probably was THE first villain group they designed and that's why they're always seen in the alpha clips)
Not in this video, but another that had Jack Emmert Narrating mentioned Supergroup bases had been on the drawing board back in alpha.

Man I had long forgotten about this video.

Super Personality
Super Intellegence
Density Control
Light Control
Life Drain
Paralysis
Shape Shifting
Super Vision

Seeing that some of the powers listed in the video eventually made it in game I wonder if any of the above will ever make it?

Who do I have to *&^% around here to get more Targeted AoE recipes added?

Here's an old gameplay demonstration from E3 2002.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3kW2Le9TJk

Some things to notice:

-Some building interiors were actually inside buildings and not underground. Watch how he exits the hospital.

-No mission contacts. You got missions from computers.

-Separate health and targeting for body parts for yourself and enemies. Head, torso, hands, legs.

-No movement suppression. "You don't get locked down in combat, you keep moving. You're going to be jumping and flying all around!" Yeah, that didn't last.

-10 years later, we're still in the same old 5th Column/Council bases with the same art assets. Yuck.

-Fly was actually fairly speedy compared to what it is now without Afterburner.

-A Boomtown-esque hazard zone with Freakshow used to be where the Hollows is now. I remember that from the very old promo comic that introduced Thunder-Head, Apex and War Witch.

-Check out that cloud layer in Steel Canyon. And the moon appears to be solid, and not the semi-transparent gob with stars visible behind it we have now.

-Players giving out missions? Outrageous! Oh Jack, you madman you.

It's clear they made a lot of compromises and discarded a lot of ideas that weren't bad. They were aiming in a different direction than they ended up, and I can't help wanting to try the game they had intended from the video. The one without movement suppression, ATs and slow clunky combat. Also it continues to shock me how little some things have changed, like outdated art assets, character models and animations. Because I look at how things are now, like the moon showing the stars behind it, and the stiff blocky run animations and our terrible mitten hands, and I just have to facepalm.

Mostly it makes me hungry for a CoH 2 that's probably never gonna happen.

I so miss the old character creator music.

Look for the UI with the hit location target graphic around 1:10.

And the flip before she takes off flying, so cool. Yes, I know it's in ninja run now.

Back in 2004 it was so "new" that you could customize the 'toon' to look so different from everyone else. It really was innovative, at least from what I had seen from the other MMOs at the time.

COH2 would probably be closer to THIS game than what's in that video.

just saying.

Yes the engine would be better and graphics would be, but I doubt they'd be doing away with things like travel suppression.

Well, I'll tell you something. At the studio they're working on project separate from CoH:Freedom. All indication is that it's "an exciting new IP."

So NOT CoH 2.

Now, I have to think twice about dumping any more of my money at the market, because despite the apparent wild success of CoH:Freedom, maybe I begin to wonder that not all of my money is going to support CoH, or even to help develop a game I'd want.

So until they come clean about their big secret project, or announce their intent to develop CoH 2, I'll be hard pressed to open my wallet any more.

I think that some of those were reworked into curent groups - like I think that Fear Factor became the Carnies.

I figured as much in some of those cases.
I suppose the Twilight Men would later become Malta, but who the hell Revelation is is another matter.

Freakshow was among the groups named in the video so they're probably not the same as Killing Crew. Revelation might have become the Lost.

@Doctor Gemini

Arc #271637 - Welcome to M.A.G.I. - An alternative first story arc for magic origin heroes. At Hero Registration you heard the jokes about Azuria always losing things. When she loses the entire M.A.G.I. vault, you are chosen to find it.

Honestly, I don't think it would be much of an improvement to have Sister Psyche camel toe'ing the camera.

The Lost are also mentioned in the video, so it's not them, either.

Love the travel powers in the video.
Also real shadows were in the cities and also inside instanced missions.
I wonder why dont we have that now more than 8 years later, except for a few iTrials.

I agree. I am as loyal a fan of CoH as you will find, and I would be far more 'excited' about CoH2 than 'generic IP game'

Imagine CoH2 with updated graphics, more environmental destruction and interaction, more powers with as free a selection as is practical. Add in on my wish list more emotes, fancy powers like growth and shapechange, and epic power special effects.

I would pay them $30 a month for that.

Also the fire sword 2 hand animation is so bad-***.
Same for old animation for one of the martial arts kicks.

If the new IP game is Call of Cthulhu or Paranoia, I'm there.
